  1. www.hayleyrecords.co.uk should do it!!
  2. No he didn't. Fool.
  3. Correct -Johnny Terry worked with Just Brothers, Jack Montgomery etc. Mike played on many of those same records but usually had writing credits with Jack Ashford. There is more detail about Johnny T. in the article about the Just Brothers.
  4. Mike was a long distance lorry driver for a short period in 1992 when he lived in Teaneck, New Jersey. He moved back to Detroit early in 1993 so that his wife, Liz, could be near her late mother. Despite a recent illness, he has been back in the studio with George Clinton and Pat Lewis, amongst others, doing what he does best.

  6. Visiting Detroit Part 1 by Rob Moss Once we’d discovered the joys of soul music in those early, surly days of pubescence, it was almost inevitable that the magnetic influence of Detroit would come to penetrate, infiltrate and dominate our hearts, minds, bodies and soles. Initially it was Motown, but as interest prompted deeper scrutiny, others, similar but different, entered the fray. And as we began to realize just how special the unique ‘sound’ was, it finally dawned that the giant bulk of this wonderful music was performed by a relatively small group of very special musicians in league with an even smaller ‘inner circle’ of creative forces, and that it was recorded in a handful of facilities dotted around the city. Scores of singers and groups benefited, in varying degrees, from the considerable commercial prosperity that was generated, and the city gained an artistic reputation that persists to this day. This is not to say that Detroit was alone, however, in contributing to the heritage and history of American musical culture. Cities like Memphis, New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, New Orleans and even Los Angeles have made significant contributions. But to many, Detroit IS special because it single handedly gave a separate and unique genre of music to the world that was created and developed, in the main, by its own people, in its own back yard and in its own image. Detroit, Michigan lies at America’s most northerly border on the Detroit River, which separates it from Windsor, Ontario on the Canadian side. Throughout the early nineteenth century it had been an important destination for slaves seeking freedom in Canada. A much different migration took place at the end of the century when Henry Ford established his automobile plant in the city in 1901.Others followed and it wasn’t long before the city became the centre of car manufacture in America. Over the succeeding decades, thousands of black workers migrated north from the Southern states in search of work and a better life, thus swelling the population and expanding the city’s boundaries. Detroit is not known as a holiday destination... note from the soul source team - sorry but all Robs non-current articles are now clipped due to a future book release - watch out for news of that!

  10. Posting information that a person has passed away, when he hasn't, is not only demeaning and insulting to that person, but insensitive, distressing and disrespectful to the family and friends of the person who died. To say that someone is 'priveleged' because they have gone to the time, trouble and expense of flying to America to meet our heroes is clearly ridiculous. To further suggest that people are put off Soul-Source because some of us have the timerity to correct blatant mistakes made by uninformed people who clearly do not know what they are talking about, indicates just how removed from reality the people who defend them really are. This is not about one upmanship or superiority - it is about respect, dignity, truth and accuracy. Joe was a warm, sensitive and extremely talented individual who will be sorely missed. May his spirit live on into perpetuity.
  11. Hope Ivy Hunter hasn't read this. The great Joseph E. Hunter is the man in question.Detroit piano man extrordinaire. I wish people who don't know what they are talking about wouldn't post threads like this. This guy couldn't have seen 'Standing in the shadows of Motown'. Do yourself a favour pal - watch it. 16. Saw the Funk Brothers and Dennis Edwards' Temptations open the Detroit Jazz Festival in September. Doubt whether Ray Monette will be with Jack Ashford - he was with the 'true' Funks, with Uriel Jones, Babbit, Eddie Willis plus another drummer, keyboards, horn section and three vocalists. They were superb. In the 'Tempts' line up was David Sea and Ollie Woodson and they too were brilliant. If either of these come over we are all in for a treat. News may be forthcoming. The previous tour featured keyboardist JOSEPH E. (Joe) HUNTER, not Ivy Jo or Ivory Jo. He is the true Pied Piper.
