  1. mentioned above, cats sound and spun at Burnley more recently, dont know why, the voclas good but it just sounds loads better as in instro.
  2. a reminder of what great soulful dance music sounds like, imho, of course.
  3. I like the aristcrats but billy woods has a northern appeal beyond that, its got a commercial, catchy, edge that puts in the top draw when you add the rarity factor, both are great records but one has that 'up' quality, Hate to admit it but tonally its not disimilar to that Bob sinclair record I love, what it called? thats it Tribute.
  4. thats ace and never heard it before
  5. absolute fool whoever it was. the man was a genius on an equal par with marvin and jb in my book.
  6. hardly ever play anything without pitching up or even down in some cases, stop short of playing things at different speeds, though I've no objection and I've heard some grt tracks played that way, honest!
  7. nice tune, there more to Lee than being a great JB impersonator.
  8. honest question, does the popcorn scene still exist? I mean do they still run popcorn events in Belgium.
  9. spot on Matt, very well put. its a side issue though, I'm sure some Dj's do love BS ( incredible though that might sound) , so the're only playing to their taste, its just I hate their taste
  10. Lovehouse (I run a night named exactly that) but hate Bob Sinclair and in fairness a lot of what's played @ modern nights, in wanting to sound so contemporary it misses the point and, to these ears, it sounds cliched and lets face it cheesy. I'll shut up now I'm repeating myself.
  11. Ian, I still hate it, but you defended it so well you should have gone into law, you been watching suits? For me I think the reason I hate it so much is down to it just being too 'up' and I like things a little on the blue side personally, soul and all other genre's have to by slightly bittersweet to appeal, Thats why I love Ron hall, hell I used to dismiss everything on Motown as just pop. in fairness to the original poster, its a little off putting to a casual user to be so negative about something thats obviously liked by many, so, sorry, but I still makes me cringe.
  12. collected soulful house since 1989, and I bob Sinclair is one of the worst examples I've ever heard. It epitomises the piss poor taste of many NS fans, sorry if its harsh do its seldom I hate a tune with such passion. Intereste to know if it gets or got plays on the modern scene though, anyone? just seen the pres comment,
  13. young disciples did it in the 9ts, pete waterman in the 8ts, sharon jones did it with 'what have done for me lately', think they said it was an recently unearthed verion of the jj song, pmsl. it creates hype, and I'm sure other commercial artist's will use the ploy i'm the future.
  14. you wanna be careful talking about fun on here, some people might get offended, sweet sweetback you got a bad bad ass.
  15. ok sorry, Im just curious to know how many 45's from the genre stated I could buy for a couple of grand, 2000? 5000? 10,000? Quality well obviously the'd vary if you buying in bulk, but I'm just talking about a job lot of soul tunes from the 6ts through till the 8ts anyone ever bought a shed load of tunes from the states or UK?, the more recently the better. This thread's inspired by or rather an anathma to the one about spending cash on fantasy crown jewel type tunes, never mind the quality its all about the bulk!!!!!!
  16. I dont have the spare cash my friend, but if I did your offer would be a better way to spend cash on soul tunes, than a single pricey item, imho. in terms of pleasure rather than investment obviously.
  17. thanks Kev, Im thinking a jopb lot from the states or cheap bulk collection over here.
  18. Inspired by another thread ( how much would you pay?) how many soul related US singles could you get for 2K? any ideas? dont have to be 6ts, a mix of 6ts 7ts and 8ts would do me fine?
  19. pretty devisive that test, not sure I'm glad i did it, why cant you choose your own words, pretentious wasnt on there!
  20. firstly, bill bush is a grt tune, quirky, original, and highly dancable, I'm amazed loads on here hate it with a passion. my pick- well a couple of years ago I lusted after a host of tunes that fetch $$$$$$$! Nowadays I'd love to see how many tunes I could get for a few grand (if I had it to spare) a mix of 6ts through to things recorded in the 8ts would do. I'm sure I get far more pleasure digging through a fresh pile of records every day for months than cherishing a couple of crown jewels.
  21. Made the point on here before myself, we live in a post modern age! Modernity is a concept that we've been sold for so long we think its real, read your history book peeps.
  22. love the Vocal and the song's grt but again those filters and breakdowns, urrgh! I wanna pitch it down about 5bpm too.
  23. What I forgot to say Cunnie is the other mix is great. Used to love Dave Lee's stuff and Frankie's up to around 96/7 untill it got too fast and pumped up, just think it sounds really dated nowadays, the slower stuff form the late 8ts through till around 93 on the other hand I cant get enough of.
  24. sorry m8 but to me the 2nd mix is abismal and eptomises a lot of what I dislike about contemporary soulful dance. its trying so desparatly to sound contemporary and yet it still sound like its stuck in the late 9ts.
  25. I know what yer getting at Matt, could I actually here any of these tunes played out at anywhere that called a modern soul night? is there such a thang as a modern oldie?
