  1. pretty devisive that test, not sure I'm glad i did it, why cant you choose your own words, pretentious wasnt on there!
  2. firstly, bill bush is a grt tune, quirky, original, and highly dancable, I'm amazed loads on here hate it with a passion. my pick- well a couple of years ago I lusted after a host of tunes that fetch $$$$$$$! Nowadays I'd love to see how many tunes I could get for a few grand (if I had it to spare) a mix of 6ts through to things recorded in the 8ts would do. I'm sure I get far more pleasure digging through a fresh pile of records every day for months than cherishing a couple of crown jewels.
  3. Made the point on here before myself, we live in a post modern age! Modernity is a concept that we've been sold for so long we think its real, read your history book peeps.
  4. love the Vocal and the song's grt but again those filters and breakdowns, urrgh! I wanna pitch it down about 5bpm too.
  5. What I forgot to say Cunnie is the other mix is great. Used to love Dave Lee's stuff and Frankie's up to around 96/7 untill it got too fast and pumped up, just think it sounds really dated nowadays, the slower stuff form the late 8ts through till around 93 on the other hand I cant get enough of.
  6. sorry m8 but to me the 2nd mix is abismal and eptomises a lot of what I dislike about contemporary soulful dance. its trying so desparatly to sound contemporary and yet it still sound like its stuck in the late 9ts.
  7. I know what yer getting at Matt, could I actually here any of these tunes played out at anywhere that called a modern soul night? is there such a thang as a modern oldie?
  8. cant believe I've never heard this before, ace, love it
  9. this along with Nicky Newharkers and Larry houston amongst others, which in the 8ts seemed to be well intergrated with a range of stafford stuff and top 500 oldies.
  10. just cause the're not tuting on here doesnt mean they wouldnt if you played it out. especially if you played it at anywhere associated with ' rare soul'. Sad but true I'm afraid.
  11. great track, but the acetate of it highlights some of the absurdity of the 'rare' scene, a one copy real acetate, so nobody else will or can play it out with credibilty, Carl and Maria, probably play it of another dub of it ( to protect the original) fair enough but this great track will probably never become massive through lack of copies. If there was no acetate of it it might stand a chance because some might think well its fair game strange world of rare soul or what!
  12. I know, but true story, twas Al shaw who bought it on a new years, last one they had there.
  13. A freind bought a Gene Toones @ the kings within the last 2 years, for £400, a nice clean issue too.
  14. All I wanted to say ws I've heard the same conversation as Len several time, repeated by different well known ds, on one occassion I heard 3 dj's arguing about who was going to play what. all the said tunes were hammered anyway. Who'd want to be an oldies DJ eh? Spending a couple of grand on a record only to find the residents and the other guest has it to! LOL, really boring and so uncreative.
  15. sorry my comment doesnt make sense. I've Maybe that could be seen as respect to another dj who is on before you/them.Certainly a forward thinking dj ,on the night, would avoid repeats if he paid more attention as to else was djing. One way is to have an an idea on who plays what.
  16. all to the detriment of the scene I'm afraid Des. Sod the punters I've got my ego to satisfy attitude.
  17. totally agree, always say I'll do it but never get round to it, lol, too much else to play russ.
  18. A lot of shouting about the guy below, It took me a while but I love this track now, its definatly a move on from most R n B lyrically. https://youtu.be/GS_K2eg7Gx8
  19. well if its fresh and hot I dont mind, if its lazy dj's not bothering to listen to one and others sets, then its poor.If its oldies dj's playing the same tune and they know its already been played its piddle poor!
  20. Dave Evison helped turn me onto soul through his signal shows in the mid 8ts, an often witty and insightfull voice showed the breadth of the northern scene at the time from Eddie and Ernie through to the mellow souls, or as it was then the dellarks CU. Gotta add Richards Searling who's shows on JFM acted as a catalyst to the revival of the scene in the late nineties.
  21. lots of music, most, has 4 beats to the bar, Motown and traditional NS had a four on the fours beat, ie both drums, and all other percussion hit at the same time. It distiguishes it from othe dance genre's, disco, house funk ect. However there are loads of exceptions too.
  22. sorry not quite there for me.
  23. simply cant believe it, a sad loss, gutted, my thoughts go out to his loved ones. the just dont make characters like mickey anymore.
