  1. no but that's where I got my taste for it too gary.
  2. Lets put it simply so all understand my opinion, the northern scene doesnt have a future, it will die out in the next 10 to 15 year, when all the 50 and 60 somthings who, in the main attend it are to old to go. Soul will continue to be played at a variety of clubs throut the country and indeed world, and may well bennifit from the death of the northern scene, lack of baggage ect. It be interesting to read any, so called traditionalist, defend how it can be maintined for any longer than that. The, at most 50, well meaning, retro obsessed kids that pass for the future of the scene.will not save it imho.
  3. first of all best thread on here on ages. Got to say that a great deal of the debate seems to be about expectations, there are the majority now who attend ns event to not only hear traditional northern soul all night, but also expect to here a really quite rigid selection of top 100 NS tunes. For these anything outside that expectation is a disappointment. There are others who are ready to except music outside that definition so long as its dancable and has a poppy, up, sound, look at examples like; tribute to betty, that shiting other tribute record!!!! urgh! and even the aforementioned vocal of double barrell. For anyone who's a little jaded of hearing the salvadors, again and, like me, is non to keen on the commercial sounding flavour of the month, what's a DJ going to play that would provide any interest whatsoever? I went to an event in stoke a couple of months, it was in a bar full of 25- 35 year old non soul scensters, LOL. I heard a local dj play an hour of classic northern oldies to an empty dancefloor, with not so much as a foot being tapped, Johnny Beggs stepped into the fore, whipping up a latin storm and well, all the girls got up and danced to 'use it before' ....' pow wow' , 'Willie Rossario' ect, he moved into R and B, hard soul and funk later, keeping them on the floor and where the girls are the lads follow. It could of just been timing but I don't think so, I just cant imagine Classic northern generating the level of interest Johnny's uncomprimising mix of styles did. I love Northern, it generates a passion in me that no other music can match and more importantly it was a gateway into a miriad of styles that I also adore. but Like paul if think the best nights are now 'off the scene' where others have that shared expectation of hearing exciting fresh tunes whatever there genre.
  4. well said you goit it spot on
  5. Yeah play some proper soul music, like holly st James, yeah right!
  6. I'm with you there Dave but almost darn't say it here, there some fanytastic stuff from the early 9ts and late 8ts, I'm spending on this stuff now while its stil dirt cheap, found some ace stuff in the last few months.
  7. I'm the other way, fed up with R and B, and want moore latin needed here
  8. A great starting place would be looking at a copy of the Northern soul top 500 book, I'm sure you'll find a host of tunes that have made in since the 'heyday'
  9. I did here a few grt island spins I didnt know at pow wow recently, but its not a northern night really.
  10. At some point tradition Modern , ( 7ts, 8ts) has got to find more favour on dancefloors. Traditional modern? now there's a contradiction in terms.
  11. that Joy of disco thing wasnt as bad as I thought 2nd time round but when you compare it to the otis doc it still sucks bigtime.
  12. saw a few guys who could really shuffle in the 8ts, at Bradford, but dont think I've seen anyone do it that well in years and years, these guys looked like they were floating!and know it wasnt the talc I was using that night, lol.

  20. no worries mate, its a tune in common parlance really, your certainly not the first to use it. its just one of those phrases that when you think about it............ The only tunes on my walls aint rare really, I've a load of beatn up singles on the door, just for decoration. A robert owens tune, with his autograph, and little anthony's - going out of my head on uk, framed with its sheet music, looks great with the legend, randazzo/ pike in the background. oh and one other, the hip pocket version of, apple peaches....... in a frame, everyone likes looking at a 3 inch flexi, dont they? lol
  21. there's a tale bout Pep getting Cigarette ahses off that guy before anyone else too.
  22. I find that term trophy records a bit tricky really, tropies are won or earned, butch getting hold of the first Mello souls in the states when us travel wasnt common place and we had no net for contacts, thats a trophy. some guy spending 2K on Al Williams out of his redundancy- thats sad really, just what is it a trophy of?
  23. A true inovator in a sea of conformist soulful dance producers, up there with Cassio ware imho. https://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2013/may/20/daft-punk-collaborator-romanthony-dies
