  1. I good friend did said to me recently, ' the all nighter scene is full of broken people, trying to pick up the pieces'. I'm sure there's some truth in that.
  2. I see a lot of parallels on this scene with the extreme sports I've been involved with through my son. And I've met a few people who have been attracted to both in some form or other. Adrenaline and dopamine are a powerful and addictive substances but it's all about how it's managed within a lifestyle whether it's healthy or not. My experience as a teacher has taught me that's it's often the system and culture that has the difficulties not the learner's. And I certainly hear many people on the scene tell about bad experiences in education and struggling to fit into school life, sadly, for many today, that hasn't changed.
  3. I like the left field and love it, to totally honest, I'd say more off kilter than flatt personally. I wouldn't play it out though, well not at anything resembling a soul night. Sounds like Neil young on lead, albeit a young, Young
  4. Odd that it's his only record he sounds so confident in his delivery.

  6. Played through samples of quite a few on channel 4 news. An album's worth of jazz standards, fly me to the moon ect. He sounded in fine voice on the samples, however the material would perhaps be of less interest to soul folk, it could have almost been a tribute to old blue eyes! No original compositions or soul related material.

  15. Ok for reference, I've had PM's confirming it was first played and broken by Dave Abbott and Sean Haydon, who both hammered it simultaneously to bring it to the attention of the wider scene. Thanks for the interest and contributions.
  16. Thanks for the details, I've been told George Mahood or Adam lever were possibly the first in the UK to play/ own it, can anyone confirm? I know Ian wright covered it as the children of the night.
  17. Willie Dale- let your light shine; who discovered this? Any additional information on the artist? I had a suggestion he's white. Not so sure myself. Found this from the Athens re issue, but who was the friend from Manchester? The Willie Dale 45 was discovered about 7 years ago. A good friend on the scene in Manchester won the first copy from ebay after which a few of us chased up the seller getting some of the (roughly) 5 or copies of the record ever to surface. What was a $500 record when it was unknown is now a $4000 after the Neo and Northern Soul scenes got hold of it. But less about the history what about the record, I could not fit this into any one genre; it is funk, soul, psyche and garage and rolled into one and one of the best discoveries in the last 15 years. Beyond essential
  18. Not long now till we open the doors once again at the basement. Travelers lust is filling up nicely, if your coming from further afield and what to be sure of getting in please message me and I'll leave your name on the door list.
  19. Thanks I thought I remembered a thread, I did search but struggled
  20. Apologies if done before, but why do so many records on black ABC, USA, have gold paint dabbed on them? I assume it was some kind of method to denote old stock and cut out sales tax? But where, by who, I've come across loads over the years.

Lost my voice this week but found it again now, it was hiding in the back yard! Anyhow I won't be bellowing but I will be belting out a wide cross section of tunes tomorrow at the cygnet. Get thee sen down!
  22. poor by the sound of it. It must be appealing to the much lauded youth market! What it needs is a young blonde girl to promote it!
  23. I think that sums it up. The whole site is prehistoric but I fear any progressive challenges will have no benefit.
  24. Anyone else having problems listing items, send me to some new search tool rather than just allowing me to list. Frustrating!
