You'll not find anyone on here arguing otherwise Rob, Northern soul has certainly done nothing to advance djing's technical aspects but it has had a massive creative contribution to the craft of Djing through its obsession with labels, obscurity, alternate versions, exclusivity, sequencing, I could go on. Its rather well documented in most books on the history of Djing, Bill Brewster's 'last night a dj saved my life' amongst many others.

ok, too small minded might of been a better choice of words. there is certainly plenty of northern soul themed events out there, but I wouldnt really describe them as part of a universal scene anymore.

no basically, the scene just isnt big enough, I've commented several times on the lack of progression from rare soul scene/ funky/ upfront into the oldies nights, it all stopped around 15 years ago imho, seems there very little consistancy in the musci played between any venues nowadays.

Great spoof that site, but mix djing is really considerably more skillful than the skills employed in collecting records imho.

its the most basic technique a hip hop dj can employ, simply sliding the x fader across- on the beat to cut into the other deck. Mind you, EQ and volume need to be matched really well. Heard Kev roberts do it with just like the weather/ love reputation at the kings hall years ago too. Its dead simple but takes bottle to carry of on a dancefloor, and it sounds shite if done badly

rob I find it a little odd that you only choose to talk about the technical aspects of the music rather than to focus on the music itself, particularly why the scene continues to be looks towards the 1960's and earlier. Many might say that the NS scene by its nature is defined by its association with the 60's, I and many others would disagree. I think its worthy raising because the possibilities of the scene moving along a timeline may be linked to its technical advancement.

compared to mixing disco, soul and funk, house is peasy but most kids (anyone below 30 in my book) shrivel at the though of using proper vinyl, as opposed to cdj's or seratto/ tractor.

I'd love to rob, just cant see it happening on the ns scene, a lot of punters just plain wouldn't get it, its a generational thing. if your in your 50's,with no insight into house or hip hop the very concept of the mix can be quite an alien thing. I grew up with house and hip hop but there's not enough open minded punters out there who would appreciate or dance to a mixed northern set at a venue. I also believe the archaic nature of the soul scene's culture adds to its appea,l for many, including the younger scenesters. A rejection of the contemporary, or the act of refusing to conform to modernity lies at the very heart of what NS is about surely? So why should it seems so strange that this attitude extends to even the presentation of the music?

funk and soul sets can and are mixed together very well off the scene, take someone like scruff, his southport mix cd from a few year back retained the credibilty and essence of every cut, yet they were enhanced by the records blended either side of them. Kenny dope, DJ spinna and a host of others have done it really well. would I trust anyone to do it well on the northern scene? your having a warlocks staff!
