My nephew is on the spectrum. He had learning difficulties and an inability to take orders, his schooling was practically zero. He would never be able to get into the collecting side of the scene as he has no ability to remember things really.  Because of his unruly behaviour, probably due to a lack of understanding and specialised schooling he had trouble making friends.  He got in with a gang who showed him friendship who were trouble, smoking dope which most kids seem to do these days regardless of their ability, he got into lots of trouble with the police.  Thankfully he outgrew that gang, managed to find a job and hold it down after a dozen jobs he got the sack from because he wouldn’t take orders etc etc.

I don’t think it is as simply as you suggest. I guess where you are on the spectrum has a lot to do how you get on in life.

I know mike thought it was irrelevant 😌 but that's why I mentioned the education system, which is set up to get kids to pass exams, essentially grade then as people, rather than to prepare kids for life and it's expectations. Anyone on the spectrum, plus many more will struggle in a system like that, and that's just your start in life!

I often wonder a half hour episode of stuff like this takes to record, there must be constant 'corpsing' by the cast, maybe they do their bits in isolation?

Not really thought about it but that is interesting.

I don’t claim to be a northern soul expert, I’ve just pointed out some of the cross overs I’ve observed in how the scene may be of interest to neurodiverse people and how it can be really good for them. It’s something I jotted down in about half an hour, which got a positive response with many people saying they appreciated hence sharing it in this forum, as I thought it might resonate with some.

I could reference all of my points however I wasn’t aiming for a scholarly article, just some further awareness which people can take or leave at their leisure. My intention wasn’t to target all people on the soul scene and as I said I was open to people’s thoughts which I have taken on board.

I appreciate different nuances however this was a reflection of my personal experiences so far, so I’m not really sure how that can be changed. I think it’s sometimes unhelpful to tell or imply to others that they don’t know enough, sometimes it’s better to show them the way with kindness because otherwise they will stop asking and the sharing of knowledge ends.

I’ve learnt not to underestimate people , there’s something to be learnt from them all.

From the comments the gear must have been decent then bring back coaches and not driving back down the M1 at 6am 😂🤷🏻‍♀️

By 1987, regular coaches from nighters were a thing of the past, nighters finished at 8, and I'd often have to walk back to the bus station and sit on a national express for 4 hours! 🫣

  4. I see a lot of parallels on this scene with the extreme sports I've been involved with through my son. And I've met a few people who have been attracted to both in some form or other.  Adrenaline and dopamine are a powerful and addictive substances but it's all about how it's managed within a lifestyle whether it's healthy or not.

My experience as a teacher has taught me that's it's often the system and culture that has the difficulties not the learner's. And I certainly hear many people on the scene tell about bad experiences in education and struggling to fit into school life, sadly, for many today, that hasn't changed.

  5. I like the left field and love it, to totally honest, I'd say more off kilter than flatt personally. I wouldn't play it out though, well not at anything resembling a soul night. Sounds like Neil young on lead, albeit a young, Young 🤣

  7. Played through samples of quite a few on channel 4 news. An album's worth of jazz standards, fly me to the moon ect. He sounded in fine voice on the samples, however the material would perhaps be of less interest to soul folk, it could have almost been a tribute to old blue eyes! No original compositions or soul related material.

  9. Ok for reference, I've had PM's confirming it was first played and broken by Dave Abbott and Sean Haydon, who both hammered it simultaneously to bring it to the attention of the wider scene. Thanks for the interest and contributions.

Willie Dale, “Let Your Light Shine.” The first batch of eight copies were discovered by collector Alex Rodriguez somewhere in Bakersfield, CA. What’s special about this record is the mystery that surrounds it. For starters, the artist’s name is fake, the street address is fake–nothing useful is given away on the label–and we have no account of what happened to the rest of the copies that might’ve been pressed. Lovie D owned the label and he has sadly passed away. The only person connected to it that we know of who’s still alive is Willie Dale’s sister and she didn’t want anything to do with it.

Thanks for the details, I've been told George Mahood or Adam lever were possibly the first in the UK to play/ own it, can anyone confirm? I know Ian wright covered it as the children of the night.

  11. Willie Dale- let your light shine; who discovered this? Any additional information on the artist? I had a suggestion he's white😁. Not so sure myself.

Found this from the Athens re issue, but who was the friend from Manchester?

The Willie Dale 45 was discovered about 7 years ago. A good friend on the scene in Manchester won the first copy from ebay after which a few of us chased up the seller getting some of the (roughly) 5 or copies of the record ever to surface. What was a $500 record when it was unknown is now a $4000 after the Neo and Northern Soul scenes got hold of it. But less about the history what about the record, I could not fit this into any one genre; it is funk, soul, psyche and garage and rolled into one and one of the best discoveries in the last 15 years. Beyond essential

  12. Apologies if done before, but why do so many records on black ABC, USA, have gold paint dabbed on them? I assume it was some kind of method to denote old stock and cut out sales tax? But where, by who, I've come across loads over the years.

As a punter and regular customer of those selling on Discogs I find the new "improved" version very clunky and less easy to use than before. It seems to take longer to load up and when I use the search features the results often don't load properly or disappear (i.e., no backtracking). Also frustrating!

I think that sums it up. The whole site is prehistoric but I fear any progressive challenges will have no benefit.
