  1. I agree with a lot you've said, there's not enough open mindedness, most records are overplayed in every element of the scene. However, I've seen similar letters in blues and soul in the 70's with sentiments bemoaning 'it ain't what it used to be', the north may rise again, but only if people will put there phones away!
  2. That's incredible, not found out in the wild for years, but you have to look.
  3. If you were out past night and got your phone our at some point, you're part of the problem, IMHO.
  4. Interesting development in what left of clubland, phone ban, Fabric is possible the nation's most significant club. https://mixmag.net/read/fabric-london-bans-photography-video-phones-news
  5. Cracking line up and quality venue
  6. Whitchurch has been great, last Swinton, I enjoyed and I'm lucky to have a great, quality oldies night, Macclesfield, nearby and the superb more left field, FTMNTC just down the road. It's not like me to be positive!
  7. I have to say Paul, it's not specific to NS, look at break dancing or footwerk for example, are those guys really into the music or just showing their skills? There has always been a competitive element in NS, some amazing dancers that have all the moves technically, but never look like they were ' feeling it'.
  8. Very interesting cultural development really, ' dance like the whole worlds Watching',but sadly a reflection on society at large. Similarly we an army of dance instructors ready to make a buck from a bunch of older folk who heard northern soul at the youthy when they were 15. I wonder if a sociologist is writing a paper on senior citizens subcultures? Definitely not sexy enough for most university professors.
  9. Thought this might be of interest https://youtu.be/Yd2SW-Fys6I
  10. Looking forward to this already
  11. Although there's been some great nights post lockdown. For many It just seems like there's something missing for those that like their soul and funk gritty, low down and just plain mean. The basement is just what the name suggests, low ceiling and atmospheric, just like the venues from our dim and distant roots. The aim is for an uncompromising all-night event of driving soul, funk and R and B.
It really was an absolute pleasure to be asked to DJ at FTMNTC. Soul nights are plentiful but this event is truly unique in allowing the djs the freedom to play what they want. Having missed the last couple of events it was great to catch up with old friends and see an evergrowing crowd of regulars attending the event. It was a real pleasure to DJ on the same bill as Martin who played an absolute blinding set, with a vanguard of quality, obscurity and diversity. To be straight forward, I didn't know half of what he played, he filled the floor and the diversity was amazing in Martin's set, which exemplified the FTMNTC ethos. Got to give credit to the residents and promotors who make the event possible and set the tone for the music. These lads are definitely on to something here!

  18. Absolute honour to be asked to spin a few records at this venue. Always a challenge to bring something lesser heard, up and coming or push the boundaries of common decency! It's about raising eyebrows more than keeping the floor rammed with obvious tunes. Knack is, to not cheat and play what they know and still keep them on the floor.

  20. I've got a copy of this somewhere, procured from the art department of my very first teaching post.
  21. Been going to nighters early doors over the last year, leaving around 2, when you really don't want to go cause the floor is full. Then I'm still absolutely knackered the next day. And I'm not as old as most of you lot.
  22. Narbay sounded awesome at Keele. Great to hear boss four at Swinton over Xmas, remember this being a mainstay of butch's set's when I first got into northern, definitely one that benefits from a big room. https://youtu.be/s9OzGRiHWh8
  23. Perfect, thanks pal
  24. Not sure either are available on vinyl, box set of singles of 'in crowd' but he want album/ double album. Some of these things go for stupid prices if not current, I know it's daft, but that's why I said easily available.
