  1. Said it before, on here most of what the northern crowd call funk is little more than soul with a wah wah guitar on it. Deep Funk ala Keb Darge, with a on the fours beat, I've yet to here anywhere on the scene!
  2. Have to say Lloyd Price's version has it for me by a long chalk.
  3. minnie reperton- rotary conection with sid barnes.
  4. two philly acts, Ethics became love commitee and volcanos, the tramps.
  5. check out Dave Haslam's musing of this in his Madchester England book, he talks indepth about Moss sides shabeen's and also the provincial nature of the Northern scene.
  6. Ian I'm sure I can remember someone saying he had pedigree and had recored some philly type thing in the 7Ts, on here a few months back.
  7. I remember being boiled getting spun @ the Hac in the madchester days, and still sounding relevant, very influencial act in termsof dance music.
  8. music can be like a conversation, all the detriot techno godfathers, May, Adkins, saunderson, cite cabaret voltaire and human league as major influences then they sold it back to the north of england.
  9. To nail my flag to a mast I'd have to say that messers Parker, Beggs, Coulstone and Mace all deserve at least a mention who along with some outstanding guests have made Bidds an amazing night for hearing fresh sounds, Viva la Bidds, lark, Duck. dust hear?
  10. top features, always really cherish my copies of this and the follow on grand slam mag.
  11. Cant help but find it quite revealing that despite many on here having a opinion on just about every aspect of the scene ( including me), not many want to speak up on this one, can o' worms methinks.
  12. Shame a lot of Dj's ego's get in the way though, understandably, er should I play this actually better record thats neither exclusive or cost me a months wage....... a no brainer for most sadly. Ive also I've heard lots of records described as massive or huge, when there's 3 copies- and its yet to be pressed, hows that work without one central venue or Dj's that dont really travel too often ?
  13. Here here, mate, spot on underplayed is the new rare!
  14. Some great underplayed sounds, Jez, a move back in the right direction.
  15. If people are making bussiness discissions to clash with other nighters the're not wise from a busines perspective. The Derby thing for example, must of cost loads to set up, you'd think they'd want to maximse its opportunity for success by not competing with established events.
  16. The residents took more of a back seat tonight with all doing, short 1/2ish spots. I spun around 6.45 ish just when feet were beggining to itch, so a few classics were need to satiate the locals, whilst still managing to intergrate a few choice current picks. Showmen- Out love will grow (long intro) swan Exciters- Blowin up my mind- RCA Kent Meade+ Remmington Sunshine- Funky to me- magic carpet Cissy Houston- I just dont know what to do with myself- Janus Seven souls- I stil love you- Okeh Isley Brothers- Who's that lady - United artists Joe Bataan- Special Girl- Uptite Earl Wright- Thumb a ride Hi keys- Living a lie- Verve Jeannette Williams- All of a sudden- Backbeat Eliose Laws - Love factory- Music Merchant
