  1. just to confirm, were talking ska and reggae records here not soul tunes by Jamacian artists.
  2. I was rather suprised to hear, and see folk dance to an out and out Reggae record in the main room @ the kings hall sat, esp considering the uproar this apparantly caused at the Cassino when Mr Winstanly played Al Capone, as detailed in Dave Shaw's excellent Cassino. I just wondered if were all that much more tollerant towards other genres nowadays? Personally I'll stick me neck out and say although I'm fond of everthing from Bluebeat to Dub and lovers, I dont feel this kinda record has any place at a Northern soul alnighter, but found it strange, watching those left on the dancefloor trying to skank, rather than offensive.

  6. Plenty of nights that feature this style, not sure if anyone would claim to play just funky northern, its a risk for any promoter to stick there neck out by pinning it down to just one style. Most of the more progressive nights advertise a variety of styles will by played throughout the night.

  9. there always opportunity for variety even in a sub genre like funky northern, perhaps a night of this kind of sound would be plausible, but I think it would take a while to build a litle scene around it before anyone would want to venture into nighter territory.
  10. The dancing, much like the music has always evolved and developed, some of its a little fast for these feet and others a little tricky because of time signitures. As long as its four to the floor and around 100- 130 BPM its good to groove in my book.
  11. Hate to be pedantic doug but there's a really strong conection between both black R and R, country and western and soul music.
  12. Change- Saturday 16th July Some of what I played earlier in the evening in various short spots. In a vague sembalance of a cronilogical order, only vague mind you! 13. good tune wouldnt like to dance to many at that pace though!
  14. Now I can see that apollas working at a nighter, certainly not dull to these ears.
  15. Suprised no ones mentioned the dancefloor in this discussion, surely the most common determiner of how well a set has gone down is feet on the floor? rather than quantity of chins stroked. I kinow this over simplifies things, as first plays of many tunes seldom ellicit a positive dancefloor reaction. The dancefloor has to be the best overall guide to how well your set whent down, given that the spot was at a time where people would dance, ie, not too early.
  16. Oh and I forgot, the production of his stuff makes Levine sound good, now thats a proper insult for you!
  17. IF YOU SERIOUSLY THINK THIS GUY CAN SING, FOR CHRIST SAKE WHY ARE YOU INTO SOUL MUSIC? HE IS APPAULING HIS VOICE IS JUST HORENDOUS, EVERYTHING HE SINGS SOUNDS SO BLEEDING LABOURED, HE HAS NO SENSE OF INTONATION OR PHRASING. AWFUL JUST AWFUL. THERE ARE SO MANY BETTER SOUL SINGERS AROUND EVEN NOW, LET ALONE IN THE 6TS 7TS OR EVEN 8TS WHEN EVEN MINOR ARTISTS ON OBSCURE LABELS HAD MUCH MORE TALENT THAN THIS OVER HYPED DROSS!
  18. I had a well known DJ on here he said he would sell me a tune at a reduced price if I payed immediatly, I wanted to look around but he said well if you want it next week I cant do it at that price, its going to be another 30 quid!!!!!! That was enough for me to say no thanks, I wont be pressured into buying from anyone! I've also experieced similar tactics with the offers situation, its a good idea perhaps for the prospective buyer to time limit the bid, we are in a buyers market after all.
  19. It depends on the floor, stone, tiled, floor boards, B and Q do a range of fillers to suit all floor types, remember to rub them down with good quality sand paper.
  20. Delray inc- destination unknown Danny White- Natural Soul Brother Ghetto Kitty - Stand up and be counted Billy Wade and 3rd Degree- Tear it up Lamer Thomas- Feet keep moving Here some of these @ change on Sat @ stoke!!!!!!!!
