  2. This clip on the whistle test promted me to get into the scene, a few months later I was attending.

  7. What a massively diverse selection of sounds there were back in that year, very ecclectic listing.
  8. good stuff guys, I'll try to post a run down of what the other collectors played, as they dont use this site, I think!
  9. In fairness there was loads more cultural pressure to do the decent thing back in the earlt 7ts. The thelma image sprung to my mind too.
  10. Am I right in saying that people tended to get married much earlier backi then which may account for the lack of late 2o somethings on the scene.
  11. Humour and serious or credible movies dont have to be mutually exclusive.
  12. Good post, there's a line between having a general feel for authenticity and adhereing to someone's personal reccognition.
  13. Doh, sorry, well two top comps I didn't know about there, this one's great too. The Ian wright connection threw me, LOL.
  14. i can remember seeeing Keb around 89, at the Brain in londons west end, he seemed as shocked to see me as he me! He opened up with some hot Rare grrove and followed the vibe into super heavy funk, they were a bunch of top breakdancers in that night, they really seemed to lap him up.
  15. vol 1 https://www.discogs.com/Ian-Wright-Fryer-Present-Soul-Spectrum-The-Mixtape-Volume-1/release/2298253 Top comp too, I wouldnt mind a copy, especially the mixed version.
  16. I've got, funk spectrum,( keb and Ian wright) jazz spectrum and the latin spectum's, all on bmg, but I've never seen the first soul vol, Ill dig on discogs!
  17. the cd is soul spectrum vol 2, on BMG, loads of tracks mentioned here feature on it, wonder whats on vol 1 though?
  18. Was big into gog go back in the day, which I'd seen this guy he was the king of go go.
  19. Jez has a similar Saxie Russell acetate, is the solid centre right? most us acetate's I've come across havelarge holes.
  20. if only people had the balls to do that nowadays, I just hear peop[le slagging off 'across the board' all the time.
  21. It did come out on US columbia eventually, Ive got one, but that booty's the one to have, I remember the tale from the time, Parksey Hammered too @ the Hac, summer 91, class year for house tunes.
  22. Mass order is an imense tune and at that time seriously hard to get, I wnet to one, just one, nighter around that time at congleton, run by the irepressible Mr Beggs I believe, and the scotts crew were there spinning soulsful garage, including a track by Martelle on clubhouse records.
  23. I met loads of characters I knew of the northern scene @ the Hac and assorted clubs around the north west, it was hard to resist really. Geoff Oakes, who's mentioned extensively in Dave Shaw's 'cassino', seemed to be like sting's 'Ace face' from quad in there, cept the Mohair suit was a Leather Chevy jacket and the lambretta exchanged for a white astra G.T.I. He went onto run start 'renaissance'. I always went for the more soulful end though and got into seriosly spinning garage around 92, I still adore 'the Jersey sound' as well as ancient chicago jacks. In fact I'm having a great time going back through that stuff, obscure labels like 'on the move', 'high Bias' 'smoking', 'tuff' ect have some real gems if you really dig. One day, you never know, the soul crowd may truely embrace it as, uptempo, soulfull dance music. Hmmmh, wonder how many 'smoking pressed of each issue????????
  24. In the 8ts, when flare groove was at it height and the 70's seemed to have a peverse apeal to rail against the ubercool look of , 2nd hand 501's, capper DM's, and MA1's, the 'wigan look' had its appeal. For me now it just reveals an anti fashion aproach, of many who clearly just wish it was 1975 again, some 7ts clothes look great and for me it was an era of great style for a few and ugly lumpen garments for the many, the Wigan vest's bags and hoop skirts is defiatly part of the later.
