Birmingham Locarno Modern Room...are You In These Photos?
Len replied to a topic in All About the SOUL
Is that 'Max Rees' bottom left? Top bloke! Len -
Apparently the number plate used to be Arthur Fenn's. I remember Jon Buck had 'RSG' as his number plate ('RSG All-nighters') Great if you like that sort of thing Len

Hi Zanetti, I know / knew Lee Jeffries - He is the record dealer Steve Jeffrie's Son. Lee DJed a bit on our scene when he was a very young lad. I remember him DJing upstairs at The Cleethorpes weekender many moons ago. I understand he has been very successful in whatever he does, hence the spare money to buy this record (I presume) Good on him, it's nice to see a young 'go getter' making good Len

I personally never got to know Keith, but like so many of us, I have enjoyed his sets during my years. From the very few conversations I’ve had with Keith, he seems to be a very down to earth person. I remember walking with him back to his hotel here in Wellingborough, chatting away as you do - I had to stop myself from saying…..”You’re Keith Minshull!”…… Had I done so, I’m sure he would have thought what an idiot I was. Sorry you’re 70th Birthday is during this current virus situation, but Happy Birthday Keith, and thanks for all you have contributed to our scene. All the best, Len

Articles: The Most Sought After Rare Northern
Len replied to Neckender's topic in Front Page News & Articles
I think if you had the money not to care how much you spent, you would become bored with that side of it not being an issue - That may have happened over the years. Most of us really appreciate a record on so many levels when we make a purchase. Len- 147 comments

That's a really sensible way of looking at it - Great records still to be enjoyed, excepting not to be owned in the main. I get great enjoyment from records on that list, I get equal enjoyment from many others which are more easily available. No point being bitter.....is there? Len- 147 comments

I can highly recomend reading the list twice, probably three times - I missed some the first time....."Oh wow".....made me not register the next few, and so on (I found those two) Len- 147 comments

I'm currently listening to Brackley Radio https://brackleyradio.uk/listen-live.php - There's a Northern Soul show on every Tuesday eve 7.00pm - 9.00pm. Just had a 'dad dance' in front of my daughter (Tabitha) I had a moment of that feeling though, and yeh, I think I do now miss going out. Patience is a virtue as they say Len

How about kids as well as students simply starting the year again in September? Basically everyone held back a year, and new starters to start a year late. Would that work? Apologies if a silly question (I'm a welder) Len

I had memberships years ago so I could use them as an excuse to 'keep out the riff raff' (Now spell checked) As in, if someone turned up that I could tell wasn't in to our music, and suspected they may take the p*ss (or were already drunk) I could simply say it was a members only event to save arguing why I wasn't letting them in. I didn't bother to ask for memberships from soul people, so anyone new that was in to our music would have got in. Saves trouble on the door. Len
-
I think the idea of having membership cards was to keep the 'rif raf' out (Although Steve 'Winsford Soul' still got in) I like them for memories, but not sure if many venues would refuse entry to anyone without a membership card nowadays - You can tell who ain't soulies by their lack of 'Ready Brek' aura Len

Well said Joey - I find the whole 'Oh so OVO' thing so 'Plastic'. I have the utmost respect for some DJs, and some I don't so much (Nothing personal I hasten to add) And guess what? Some I don't rate only play original records. DJing is different to collecting. DJing is an art form as far as I'm concerned (I know some may find that a ridiculous thing to say) It takes a lot of work for a DJ to gain respect, which is something that can not be rushed, or more importanty - Bought! Just enjoy the blo*dy music! Ok I'm done Len

I wasn't going to get involved in this one, but I can't resist..... The title of this thread includes 'the 21st century'......Now I fully understand the ethos of the scene, and personally I will never drop that. As far as I'm concerned you need 'licence' to play records. As in, ref respect for the people on our scene (as well as the artists) the original format must be played. That said - I think it blo*dy hillarious ref 'the 21st century' that we don't actually need records anymore full stop! Which I know sends lots of us in a complete daze, after all the years of collecting, wants lists, waiting, and even bidding way over the top just to bag that tune! We don't need Videos anymore, DVDs are now almost gone, as are CDs, and on it goes..... But to come full circle - The scene just wouldn't be what it is if the original ethos wasn't maintained If that all makes sense Len

You seemed to be at every single venue I attended. RIP Skippy Sue. Len x

At first I thought lots of 'promoters' will be chomping at the bit TO BE THE FIRST! So a load of events will be scrambling for the diary dates. But the longer this goes on, maybe, just maybe, less people will bother putting events on after re-evaluating that other things are more important in their lives. So rather than have the stress of putting on an event, they choose to attend other events instead. Time will tell of course, but I for one am hoping that the scene is a more 'condensed' animal after this virus has said goodbye - Let's not rush this. Hope to see you all at The Bury All-nighter when it is safe Len
