  1. What year was that mate? I don't think I know Tony Reynolds. All the best, Len P.s - Ted, I'm trying my bestest not to be facetious on this thread - I'm finding peoples views very interesting
  2. Ok, so maybe I do listen to a bit of R 'n' B' under my quilt whilst reading Titbits.....maybe I don't...... Len
  3. Someone mentioned 'Otis Lee - Hard Row to Hoe', and 'Bud Harper - Wherever You Were'.....I absolutely fell in love with these two records in the 80's, and I think the reason being was because they were so different - Especially the haunting 'Hard Row to Hoe'. I still love them both to this day, although Bud Harper has only just come 'back off the shelf' after about ten years - For some reason I am loving it 'all over again' at present All the best, Len
  4. SOUL! Len
  5. I like it Mace......so it can't possibly be R 'n' B Len
  6. I had the same experience (very noticeable at one particular venue) - It seemed to happen rather suddenly didn't it? All the best, Len
  7. Yes, you are never gonna forget that, nor is my Mum after me trying to re-do the paint job on that black curtain in the garden and getting in a right old tizz! You are correct mate - As you can see below, although this being a later flyer, around that time I advertised all kinds of music, and even pushed 'a little bit of 70's' which was 'pushing it' for the type of event. Do you remember the uproar when I played 'Praying' at The Isle of White? - Thank god for Danny Huff, and The Ugly Bugglies for making up for everyone's scowls! ......I know Alison remembers that As we all should except, each to his own an' all that. But I do hate it when some become too precious about their choice - I get loads of stick for my 'poor taste', but I couldn't give a sh*t - It's my taste, and know lots are 'in my gang'......the ones with taste....... All the best, Len
  8. Hiya Alison (Mrs Positive) To be clear here - My 'R 'n' B' Stinks' jibe was done 'tongue in cheek', although unfortunately some did take offence - which is incredible if you know me at all (I think some read it the way they wanted to actually) I never did like the 'R 'n' B' stuff really, I thought I liked Jazz, but it was always Dom and his Soul stuff 'freshly outa The 100 Club' that really did it for me......just took me a while to work out 'what was what' My 'jibe' was done in reaction to going to venues and hearing the R'n' B that just didn't 'do it' for atmosphere - I found myself getting frustrated, and going outside......I have since seen that there is good R 'n' B, and bad R 'n' B - The ones who play the bad stuff let the ones that play the good stuff down badly because people end up writing it off completely (As I did) That also goes for any genre - I'm well aware of the Beat Ballads that may stop people listening to lovely Mid-tempo Soul that should be played more (imho)....It's called 'Mid', not 'slow'......It's a matter of really seeing who's playing the good stuff and who ain't - as I said that goes for any genre. I confess to have loved Latin Soul........I blame Mace and Dave Ingle for that, crumbs that was a long time ago mate, it was the 80's when you D.Jed for me ........Rhythmm......Rithum......Ridum......Damn. damn, damn All the best, Len
  9. Um....You and Terry are right - The masses are wrong. Len
  10. I've done both, and would have to say I'd prefer to be on before him - That way, at least people would stay in the room! Doing so isn't intimidating as such, it's more a privilege, and as long as you aren't 'trying to be Butch', he's quite nice about it. All the best, Len
  11. Luckily (for us) I would imagine D.Jing, along with records is well worth him doing (financially)......I wonder if he would still be doing it if that wasn't the case - does he still get 'the buzz' after all these years? I hope so. Len
  12. I remember making the fatal mistake of 'insisting' my work colleagues came to 'one of my do's'......What was I thinking?!!! - What an idiot!.......After they had 'settled down' after seeing a load of 'old blokes in vests' dancing on their own, they approached me absolutely crying'with laughter......"Look, look Len!" (showing me a poster)......"Special guest Butch!!! lol!" etc, etc.....You can imagine the rest.....god I hate engineers..... Len
  13. 'kin well said!.....Jimmy Robbins - fantastic R'n'B Soul record...then people 'scraped that barrel' to be 'cutting edge'......"Put Jimmy Mack on FFS!!!" Get me? Len P.s - I did a couple of The Embankment Club Posters with "R'n'B stinks". on them...they went down rather well....ahem.....well Roger Banks thought they were hilarious......as did I.....after the death threats......
  14. ....."If it ain't Soul, it ain't Soul"....... All the best, Len P.s - Meant in the nicest possible way
  15. Makes sense - I remember Cliff playing it in the late 80's......So Butch ain't that good then..... Len P.s - Great sir name though - 'Dobson', being slightly rarer than 'Dopson'
  16. 'Bobby Mac - Shy Guy' - To cheap! What a record!!! Len
  17. Good God - Does anyone know him really well?!!! I like him, and get the impression he can 'read people' pretty well (can't explain why I think that)......He 'does what he does', and doesn't expect, or want any 'kudus' for it - I remember saying a simple 'thanks' to him at The 100 Club 25th Anniversary for his 'service', he acknowledged it ok, but I know that's not what he does it for. "little bit more insight would be great"....... Without being to intrusive - Myself, and Nina (the wife) celebrated New Year in Cornwall a few years back with a hand full of people which included Butch and his Mrs, and I saw that he is a normal bloke (and can drink Whiskey without the coke!) He also has some great stories about trips to America. I remember him D.Jing at The Embankment Club, explaining that he had been playing football that day - Just a normal bloke (with 'tunes!') To me, he is what 'Northern Soul' stands for (along with Mad Sean from The 100 Club) - very unassuming, and just 'gets on with it' I hope the above is ok. All the best, Len P.s - He also made me feel ok when D.Jing at The 100 Club, which I really appreciated (Just a simple...."are you ok?"....worked wonders)
  18. 'ditto'......Mind you - I can now 'officially declare' it as a floor packer - Thanks to Butch doing the business with it again at Life-line last Saturday 'You're welcome' btw lol Len
  19. Dunno, but I thought he looked pretty cool (Not ironic btw) Right, time to get ready for Life-line......now what to wear?..... All the best, Len
  20. There was a fantastic piece about young people in Manifesto magazine years ago, written by the 'one and only' Mr Potato Head. It included them having to hide behind a bush on the other side of the road from the venue, and look at the queue for at least 6 months before even thinking about joining it!.....Be great if someone could post the article up.......I'll start wading through my pile of mags.......Hang on that don't read quite right All the best, Len P.s - Young people don't need, or ask for any help - The gooduns will find their own way (respectfully)
  21. One of those records that I understand people liking (especially those from 'back in the day') but always gave me a head ache - Meant in the nicest possible way All the best, Len
  22. ....Never apologise for R 'n' B - I love this stuff Len
  23. Huh - How times have changed........I thought it was a 30 year apprenticeship - Blo*dy government getting rid of City and Guilds Len
  24. ......very true...... I think what people can't handle (Have to include myself in this to a point) is that some feel it simply shouldn't be seen to keep it underground........along with all those good looking young people of course! I'll look forward to reading tomorrows 'papers' Night night. Len
