I don't think they're daft - I see them as a way of letting folk know what a venue is about, and most of us get the gist from these descriptions (Even the 'well known' term 'Philosophical') I haven't been (yet) but 'Pure Soul' kinda gives me 'an inkling' that I will be hearing 'Pure Soul' if I decide to go - It is an attraction to me at least, whereas some other descriptions may lead me to decide not to go (meaning, ok a particular event is not for me) Point being, I do think these descriptions can be helpful, especially if you like to try lots of different venues (which is a trend with some folk nowadays) All the best, Len

Or good R'n'B :wicked: Have a good week folks Len

Some records seem to stay the same price for years, strange really in comparison to what happens with other ones. I'll say it again - Great record! Len
-
Phew, I'm not the only one - I wouldn't wanna make myself look silly now would I? I can't actually remember what I paid for it, but I'm sure it was more than £184.00 - I do remember being so pleased to get hold of a copy though. This is another record I would like to hear more often when out at present. I know some records have 'been processed' so to speak, but we must never forget how good they are - they need 'doing again' from time to time (Sounds great) Len

Was thinking the same, I haven't a clue with ref it's rarity, but it's one of those records that people keep a hold of - Pssst, I would even say it was a £400.00 record. Yeh it seems I'm miles out, but who's to judge? I love the record. All the best, Len

Yes absolutely regardless of age mate - When I say 'Old Gits', I mean the ones that seem to ignore the years that went on after they had left the Scene - As someone pointed out in an earlier post, there are lots that have come back with the exact same attitude as when they left (like yourself Manus), and are a pleasure to go 'disco dancing' with. I know loads of 'Old Gits' (no offence intended btw) that I have the greatest respect for, and those that are literally seeped in knowledge, and history (never having a break) are the nicest people you could meet - I could mention many names, but don't need to, they know who they are, and have nothing to prove to anyone (They don't go around putting younguns / new comers 'in their place') Len

When I say do your own thing, I really mean it, and (although relevant) I wasn’t really / only referring to dancing. I mean it in more ways than one, the main thing being your own personal SOUL musical taste - Focus on the tunes that grab you (Remember, everyone else’s taste is awful) As Bryney, and others have pointed out, the advice thing is utter b*llox - It, and any delusional superiority (that some may have) usually comes from some of those that had a ‘fleeting romance’ with Northern Soul in the 70’s. These types have absolutely no respect for what went on in the 30 years since - Lots went on mate, enjoy finding out what (as I still am), and don’t ever let your confidence be knocked by some of the old gits with no taste or history (Believe me, they do try from time to time) Len P.s - Before anyone says I’m full of advice, I ain’t - I have my opinions………. P.p.s - The people that said this to you (Ref dancing) may well have had best intensions, and to be fair to them, I have been told that all the best dancers danced at the front at Wigan - I actually think that there may well have been a natural gravitation of regulars at the front, and were probably pretty ‘good’, as (being regulars) they had more practise (Somat like that anyway)

My first dance at a completely Northern event was Loughborough Town Hall back in 1985, one of the guys dancing I later learned was Mad Mick from Burton (RIP) I sat watching for ages completely mesmerised, and my older mates ended up giving me absolutely no choice! I felt such a plonker (expecting them all to point and laugh) but all I noticed was one of them give me a nice smile, and I soon felt ‘ok’ Nowadays I sometimes think to myself……”Jeeeze Len, your 44 years old, what the heck are you doing dancing around at your age?!” he he Ignore any advice and do your thing! Welcome to this ‘unique’ Scene mate All the best, Len P.s - I thought your post was one to wind everyone up, but it has shown we’re actually not a bad bunch really (in the main)

Turntable Spindle Adapters - Aluminium Brand New Top Quality

Whatever happened to lining the centre of a record up with your finger?........I thought you were all D.J's See ya Friday Ray Len -
Right, so he doesn't expect to be automatically D.Jing at a future event because he D.Jed once - He D.Jed at a venue once in it's early stages, so thinks he should be listed as one of the original D.J's. Well it's a funny question - I think the fact that it is an issue would suggest maybe the said person is focussing on the wrong thing too much. I think most people in the same position wouldn't give it a second thought (He's got his nice personal memory of D.Jing at an historic venue) Hey ho - I hope there's not too much to this, as in, he's not been 'left out in the cold' on purpose for some sinister reason etc - "D.J's have feelings to" Len
-
JulianB said there's a reason for asking. You're right about nobody reading flyers anymore - The less info on them the better it seems as far as 'selling' is concerned. All the best, Len
-
I'm still confused, could you clarify the question again? I interpret it as - Someone has D.Jed at a venue once, then is expecting to be on the flyers for the next one (I don't think you mean that) Is this what you mean? - Should someone that D.Jed once at a venue be included in a list of Original D.J's? As you said flyers, I'm presuming another event is to happen, so if they are D.Jing I suppose their name should be on it if all the other D.J's are listed - Why would anyone feel the need to name who's D.Jing, and leave one out? All the best, Len

I can't comment on the Grumpy management (no pun intended there btw!) The staff seemed nice at least. But over the years I have worked with many different venues, and have experienced the added stress of not having the management 100% behind what I was doing. In actual fact, quite the opposite (and this is the incompetence aside) There's me bringing business to their venue! It's unbelievable really, and most annoying. It does make you really appreciate it when the people you are dealing with are supportive though. Anyway, hope all sorted ok for the anniversary. Len
-
'What fun' aye? Hey, it may be a blessing in disguise, and benefit the Anniversary - I know I shall be making an extra effort to get to that, and hopefully other folk will too. I had to cancel Octobers 'Lennys' due to being moved to make room for a wedding, but that made me think 'b*llox to it' (that along with so many other events happening) Glad it hasn't put you off - Keep going guys, Grumpy is one of very few venues that I plan on attending (even with Carl F being involved!) All the best, Len

The One That Got Away.... The Misery Of Losing Out On A Rare Find
Len replied to baudrillard's topic in All About the SOUL
I went to a record shop in Traders Victorian Arcade in Reading, looking through some records, got chatting (The guy had a Wigan Casino membership behind his counter)......."Blah, blah, blah"..........."We did have loads, but someone came in and completely cleaned me out a week ago".........."I don't suppose you got the guys name did you?"........"Yes, John Manship"......... Argh! God luv him Len -
Be great to hear more from these unsung heroes 'The Feeders' - How nice for them to see one of their discoveries working well. So much more satisfying than paying a million pounds for a record that has already been 'processed' - Good on em Len
-
I was under the impression that there were quite a few 'feeders' behind the D.J's 'in the olden days'. Isn't it true that Butch for instance was one of those 'feeders' (record bar people sounds better actually), and only D.Jed the first time because someone hadn't turned up - Pat Brady suggested it apparently. I agree that it's important to give credit where credit's due to people who have done the 'work'. I've always been interested in who discovered what, who played it first, who broke it ('sold' it to the dancers), and where something was first played (not always going together as is what your post is about) All the best, Len
