  1. I don't think they'd particularly want to, I don't think they would give it much thought (Not being bothered where the sound is coming from) Records will always be important to us, but if it goes down another route for the younguns so be it Len
  2. Goes back to acting professionally - you should never feel like that when you're just trying to put in place what has been agreed. The above point in bold could be another thread altogether! I've had nightmares when staff / managers are basically working against you and the whole event. That is the one thing that has really annoyed me over the years - Some 'jobs worth' throwing his weight around for the sake of it. There was 4 different managers over The Embankment Club years, and one in particular was so miserable and awkward, one night he was so rude to a regular record dealer there, the guy packed up and went home! I rang him the next day to apologize, but ffs, you shouldn't have to be 'picking up the pieces' after miserable management! (There's enough to think about when running an event) Len
  3. That's the difference - Not many of our lot can command big fees in relation to pulling people through the door. Just Butch (and maybe a few others) Going back to other points raised on this thread - In the defense of promoters, if nothing is mentioned about fees before an event, I'd say that it was a given that the DJ excepts that he will get something if there's enough in the pot (That's the way I see it anyway) Obviously these £10,000.00 plus DJs sort that kind of business well in advance. Len
  4. Even at $500,000.00 Calvin Harris can make a mistake - So rest easy guys
  5. It is cr*p though I know, the nerves have kicked in 5 days before the event, and you're there long before everyone else so it seems natural to start checking your watch the moment opening time arrives......just as the last record goes on you relax Been there many times, it's not for me nowadays but my heart goes out to you - I'll just attend and criticize Len
  6. Especially at midnight!
  7. Good on ya. Nothing wrong in anything there - Your DJs all saw themselves as 'part of the team', as in, you and they all had the same goal of wanting this place to work, and the agreement was set before the event. You also kept your word and paid them when it did 'look like a runner' Being straight down the line that is - Being straight down the line with people avoids all sorts of unnecessary problems (ever) All the best, Len
  8. Thanks Carl - I think I'll stick with me records Len
  9. Years ago there was an OVO thread (One of the original ones) ........I posted something on the lines of........."Would it be ok if a well respected DJ like Brian Rae played off CDs because he has done so much for the scene, a bit like only the Queen can eat swans?"........ The reply........."No Len"......... Maybe peoples' views have since changed with age, especially if we're aiming this at younger people Len
  10. I didn't know what it was mate (I thought it may be relevant to Carls' post) I was talking to a 'Download DJ' at the weekend and he mentioned it. Cheers, Len
  11. When ya done - Enlighten us please! Len
  12. Or use 'Time Coded Vinyl' already available (Whatever that is!!!) Len
  13. There would be an interesting reaction to say the least! Your post reinstates the point that I don't mean if this happened that it would automatically mean that anyone could DJ - Far from it. The good DJs would still be skillful at their trade. It would be an interesting night, not least at seeing who would turn up at such an event Watch this space Len
  14. It's probably too late, but hey, here's hoping another generation can feel that 'buzz' in whatever way they can Len
  15. I think 'feed-back' is better than simply 'complaining' - Constructive criticism if you like. Some people that simply complain often think the whole night is just about them. I think feed-back does go on, but privately rather than on an open forum because it's always a sensitive area, and the person giving that feed-back can never be sure how it will be received. I've done it btw, and any replies I have had have been absolutely fine - I think if done on an open forum I may not have got the same sensible responses because even well meaning feed-back could look very negative to others if done that way. All the best, Len
  16. I like cheesy D.Js Carl If it did happen, I think some may see this change as ‘anyone can D.J if they can just download tunes’……Nowadays you can buy records (and become a ‘D.J’) at the click of a button, so not much difference if you think about it (Except for that monetary ‘emotional connection') Len
  17. Very interesting and honest post - Some peoples' reaction to all this could well be scorn, and I except and understand that because we're talking of such a massive thing to some people changing, but I think sometimes people can get so wrapped up in it (Also the one- upmanship / jealousy bit that you touched upon), they can miss the point - The enjoyment to be had from these wonderful sounds. Vinyl will always be important to us lot, but maybe not for the future younguns - If change does happen let's hope it can be excepted over putting them off with our barriers Cheers, Len
  18. Most folk are not collectors I agree, but there's a tad few more that see themselves as DJ's as was back then / up to the late 80's, (even mid 90's actually). DJing didn't cross most punters minds in the slightest, they just went and danced like b*stards to the fantastic sounds! Who said the 70's was bad? 1970 was a great year - It was the year I was born! Len
  19. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I think what Kegsy is saying is on the contrary - He's saying that these younguns wouldn't have the emotional connection as a collector would have (after all the hard work they put in to researching, and finding records) The factor they would have is how much they enjoy the actual sounds, basically the same as the early 70's when only a small percentage of people were actually hunting out the tunes - He's saying that isn't such a bad thing. Is that right Kegsy? Len
  20. If it was done like that (Chap sticks his memory stick in and heads to the bar) that wouldn't be DJing, and there would be no passion behind what he is doing, so yes, of course that would be awful. Len
  21. I'm no expert on the sound quality point, so will take your word on that - That is an important point though (Maybe some would disagree if the right kit was used) People are influenced by their peers, so I expect the young ones that choose to dress as they do are around older folk that do / or they went down the digital route to find things out, and that's what popped up - Their choice of course, but you don't need a uniform to be a soul fan. Len
  22. They could do that, but that would be limited in comparison to having literally everything to hand - This 20 year old with attitude (Maybe Keb Darges' grandson) would be able to play really varied sets in his goal to conquer the world! (Our world) Len
  23. Oh yes, we wouldn't stop long Len
  24. I just love the highlighted line above Great overall post - It shows how 'erked' (Not sure if that is actually a word) we are! I suppose it means some of us think..."Yeh, great if these younguns feel the same passion, but we don't wanna see it going on"....And I'm with you on the pain of it! Len
