  1. I can’t Mike - I’m a Moderator, I may get sacked if I say I don’t really do play lists! Oh dear, I suppose it’s too late now, so here goes…… I voted no, although I am not completely against them - I do understand the interest side of things / what others are playing / where they’re playing them etc, and of course people can learn about new sounds from play lists. But for me - I am focussed on the ‘night out’, so I have the view that a play list can’t tell me how good a venue is, and think you need to be there to appreciate a record being played ‘in context’ You may well see a pretty predictable record on a play list, and ‘shrug’ (heard it before yawn), but on the actual night, that record may well have really hit the spot!…….And on the other hand, you may see a really interesting / creative / 'rare' play list, yet the actual night (or spot) being pretty poor. …….Except for the ‘Top 5’ thread of course as that’s different (What’s happening ‘at a glance’ kinda thang) All the best, Len
  2. I think 'time off in the summer' was something that happened everywhere, and it makes sense - Apart from people doing other things in the summer months, it helps keep people 'keen' (Less is more) Also, we all have various reasons for not 'hitting it hard' as we used to (having young children, work etc) I do hope that The 100 Club (the best club ever) has a second (or third or fourth) 'wind' - It's in the heart of London, so hopefully it has a good chance of a new generation gradually taking our place / and allowing us to visit in our old age just to absorb the new electric young atmosphere It has to be said though - The 100 Club is still blo*dy good! And it does attract a good amount of young people. Ady is only being aware of the numbers through the door, and acting accordingly (This thinking should help matters) All the best, Len
  3. I voted 'all of the above' because I feel nowadays a 'team effort' is needed to give an event a better chance of being successful. 'People running the event' obviously have to spread the word as much as poss / 'People playing the event' (DJs) could (not should) spread the word to those they know that would like the type of event / 'Like minded people' should tell others if they believe in the event, so as to help the longevity of somewhere they like attending / and I suppose even the venue itself could do a bit to get a few more bodies in, unless you wanted to keep local non soulie types away (Which always used to be the case) Nowadays is definitely different All the best, Len
  4. And that is why I hired you my friend - "Empty dance floors rule ok!" I know lots of times people reminisce about a certain record being '3 Bob' back in the day etc, I remember ringing up after 'The Limitations' on several occasions in those days Dave, and it was actually £25.00 back then - I never managed to bag it until some years later though. Len
  5. Yeh 'The Limitations' was £150.00 not long ago.....or maybe it was 'long ago', I dunno, I'm getting old - A very good record though Len
  6. I sold my 'In Orbit' demo to a friend for 50p - It went to a good home Len
  7. My top 5 from the weekend - ‘The Parliaments - Heart Trouble’. Played by Andy Dyson in the main room at The Bury All-nighter - It really ‘hit the spot’ ‘Enchantments - I'm In Love With Your Daughter’. Played by Denny Johnson in the main room at the Bury All-nighter. Again, just ‘hit the spot’ (A great DJ is Denny) ‘Jackie Beavers - Come back my love’. Played by Gibby in The Kenwood Suite at The Bury All-nighter. ‘Billy Stewart - Count Me Out’. Played by Simon Ingham in The Kenwood Suite at The Bury All-nighter. ‘Tommy Frontera - (You're My) Leading Lady’. Played by me in The Kenwood Suite at The Bury All-nighter. Nothing ‘super new’ on my list, but sometimes a record just sounds so right All the best, Len
  8. Cheers Rod - A job well done! Happy retirement Len
  9. I've always liked the 'Northern Soul Mumble', never understood a word, but always liked it! Len

  11. Oh sorry - I read ' Something old someone new' as being a new DJ just playing tunes that are already being played Ok, yeh definitely someone new if they have their own 'take' on things gets my vote, even if their inexperience makes them 'wobble' every so often, it would still make the night interesting - Good luck to the poor soul this may relate to! Hope I haven't confused your thread! Len
  12. We'll see by the result of course - But I've always thought to just serve up (as you put it) the same old same old, is patronizing to the punters. My view is that most people who enjoy SOUL music would welcome something new (and someone new if they were ok at DJing) As long as it's 'served up' properly, as in, not boring people to death by only playing tunes that the majority there are unfamiliar with. A good record is a good record! So 'something old something new' gets my vote every time - They compliment each other! (Although you have put 'something old someone new' in your title) Len
  13. For those that missed it, here's a funny thread that may have some answers Len
  14. When they've been heckled! ........Bitter experience talking here Len

  16. I also have a window Brilliant! Len
  17. Serious answer - To share the enjoyment they get from their PERSONAL taste (That's why I've always done it) Although it is a thankless task from time to time, and can be blo*dy hard work, so get ya point of why anyone would want to be a soul DJ - Especially nowadays, because it seems everyone is an expert! Len
  18. Stop being so positive Sean - You're better than that! Len
  19. On a Sunday! - Blimey! Len

  23. I thought it was done with a marker pen! Thanks for posting it up. Len
  24. Absolutely agree - It was a fantastic / exciting period of the scene. Manifesto Magazine has been mentioned on this thread - If any of you have old copies, look at the events section, just two pages for three months events! The same crowd mainly used to end up at the same events week in week out. Whereas today we're 'splintered' all over the place, with many venues struggling to get enough people in (Do the math) Great memories. Len
  25. I may be remembering this wrong (So please correct me if so) But I'm sure I remember a kind of hand written flyer for the first 'Rarest Of The Rare' All-nighter (maybe done with a marker pen)......God knows what year though Great if someone can post it up. Len
