  1. Yes I think the general question is - What first three records would you choose to play in any given set? Naturally some share an example of what they have used in the past. I don't think many use the same three, although (as mentioned) some who don't DJ that regularly may do so. It wouldn't be noticeable as it would if someone did the same thing on a regular basis - That would lose something pretty sharpish! Len ,
  2. Well put. Although I have gone the other way, and finish most of my sets with 'The Dells - It's All Up To You' (If anyone is still in the room that is) It leaves a 'feel good factor', and is of course in contrast to the Mid-tempo bits 'n' pieces I like to play during my set. Hey it's Monday morning - Have a good day guyz! Len 'The Dells - It's All Up To You'
  3. He he - One DJ before me asked......."Len, do you want me to clear the floor? Saves you doing it mate".........."Yes please".........And he did! Hilarious, and made my job that bit easier Len
  4. Was for everyone at one time, but not the majority nowadays - A large percentage of people now want familiar sounds, then some of those people are comfortable with unfamiliar sounds if played 'in there somewhere'. DJing nowadays can be a ble*ding mine-field All the best, Len
  5. First sentence - I agree (Although your sentence is a question) I know some think DJ to DJ should be a seamless transformation, but I prefer the complete opposite. New DJ = New Chapter! Second sentence - It depends where you're DJing. But often during the 80s / 90s DJs would 'underline' their set with a slowie. Colin Law finished his set at Life-line with 'The Four Tops - Ask The Lonely' which worked fine, and was appreciated. This practice is alien to some, so if not seen before can be a bit of a shock. All the best, Len
  6. Great stuff - That was a very busy night, so much so, Nicola Anderson volunteered to help the panic behind the bar! Butch was also on that night (Not to take anything away from Mick also attracting the crowds of course) The Embankment Club has now been condemned - It worked so well because it had a low ceiling and it was DARK (The music weren't bad either) All the best, Len
  7. 'Fail to prepare - Prepare to fail' Or whatever works for you Len
  8. Can you post the link please? I might re-start my 'Philosophical Soul Nights' again one day All the best, Len
  9. Jeeeeze, I thought I always over think DJing - Now I also have this lot to worry about! (I might print this off) Joking aside, all valid points sir All the best, Len
  10. Sorry - I forgot to put the 'mischievous face' thingy up () 'Well caught' that man! All the best, Len
  11. Yes lots I'm afraid as not long ago - I'm having a sort out over Christmas, so may be in the sales (Not sure as yet though mate) No PMs please! All the best, Len
  12. So do I - Maybe I should use that in my first 3 from now on Len (Still learning)
  13. And you only have as long as a record lasts to choose your next one, so a bit of thinking time beforehand can be very beneficial. It is part of the fun racing through your record box to choose something though - Always happens regardless of how much planning is done. Again - Whatever works for you All the best, Len
  14. I've started a set with 'Teddy Randazzo - You Don't Need A Heart' before - It didn't totally destroy the dance floor and mood (Much to my disappointment) (Referring to another tune usually seen as an 'ender') Len 'Teddy Randazzo - You Don't Need A Heart'
  15. You can completely plan a set if you so wish, as long as you are capable of making changes that work if needs be (Which is usually inevitable) Whatever works for you All the best, Len
  16. How dare you! That is also a good side - Many times I've bought records, which follow a comment from the seller......"Len, people normally buy that for the other side"....... Len
  17. Funny story attached to that play - I thought it a tad 'risky', so I spliced it in straight after Terry Callier (No talking on the mike between) I was too scared to look at the reaction, so I turned round to my record box and whispered to Simon Ingham....."Si, Si, are they dancing?" He cracked up....."Yes they are Len" Of course they were - It was Bury. Get yaselves down there this year to their Boxing Day All-nighter, it's always a 'cracker' (Pun intended) Len
  18. As per below ('Proven' at The Bury All-nighter Main Hall Boxing Day 2017) It didn't 'follow' the last DJ (who was doing just fine) as mentioned above. The last DJ was playing good 'nighter' sounds - So I put a stop to that Len 'Terry Callier - Ordinary Joe' 'The Sophisticates - I Need You' 'Terri Bryant - Geni'
  19. It is nice selling them to another 'good home', in the knowledge said person will get the same enjoyment you have had from them. Soppy lot ain't we? Len
  20. Interesting, and fully understand your mourning. It may sound weird to some, but presently I feel it's a bit ugly owning 'thousand pound sounds' (Probably to do with having a young family to finance) Yeh, I know it was never about the money, and most of my records I will keep as I still play em / going off in to my very own 'Never Never Land', and will do that for as long as I can get to the record player I feel for anyone who has to sell, as I believe that hurts a little bit more so than selling at a time when one doesn't necessarily need the cash, but thinks that cash may as well be used for something extra All the best, Len
  21. Hi Peter, If you need cash, I'd say sell as a job lot as recommended by Steve - Not sure of the percentage loss, but I guess you would get 60% of the value, and I believe Chris is a trustworthy guy. Funnily enough, I don't 'need need' the cash, but lately I have been thinking of having a bit of a clear out to fund a holiday to America for my family. It just seems silly that I could do that in exchange for a handful of plastic. If I do choose a few, they will be 'priced not to sell' though - Who knows what certain records are really worth? Best of luck in raising some funds mate. All the best, Len P.s - What's with the "Serious replies please" ? I found that extremely hard to deal with
  22. No one - But both can put you 'on a level'.......apparently Len
  23. Ditto Welcome to the site grahame c. All the best, Len
