  1. I'm a welder - Likewise! Len
  2. You may have meant pictures, but look at most live concerts nowadays, there's a 'herd' of tablets / phones being held up filming it, which I think takes something away from the whole experience. Len
  3. You're right - And they miss the actual 'live' experience. Len
  4. Yeh sorry about that - I'll practice some more before I set my camera up again Len
  5. Maybe - But that exposure also bought some 'stayers' to our Scene Len
  6. I've nothing against people sketching as that is not intrusive - I expect you're sat in a corner scribbling away, not bothering anyone. During the war, my great granddad caught a rare illness that made him have to constantly sketch - He had been struck down by the Doodlebug Len
  7. Although I will make the effort occasionally, it's not as near as much as I used to - Kids growing fast / business to run so need to be 'tip top', as well as not wanting to constantly go over the same old ground again and again (I do miss that feeling of it being the most important thing in my life though) We have the music at home of course, but nothing beats doing it as I used to. Presently no longer 'a way of life' for me that's all Len
  8. Lets make us all feel ok, and simply put the dancing down to age (For those that haven't seen this) There is a second lot of footage of the same club some Ten years later, but this was done interdependently by a regular punter (Keith Jones) Not on his phone mind as it still wasn't the time of every man and his dog filming from their phones. It's a bit wobbly, but it 'documents' it pretty well. Sorry if hijacking this thread, thought be of interest to some......Goes without saying, there was not 'Nine soul events within a Ten mile radius' this night - Promoters really did work together back then Len
  9. Yes I think 'document' is the word (Like photos used to be when you only had 24 in a film) Some really nice interviews with various people getting across what the scene and the music meant to them. Len
  10. 'Kick, clap, drop, spin' See you on the other thread... Len
  11. Back in the 90s I hired a professional to make a promotional video of my event. I instructed his assistant to interview people outside or in a separate room, I also explained that I did not want the big light on hardly at all, and he did keep that to an absolute minimum - They were good at what they did, and didn't really intrude on the night at all. These were the days before You Tube / Everyone wanting to be famous, and although I was apprehensive about doing this for reasons you have all given above, I am glad I did, as all these years later it is something to look back on for some folk - Not least seeing friends sadly now lost enjoying life. Everyone with a camera as it is nowadays is awful, whether it be taking photos or videoing, and something that really is a 'no no' on our scene. Although I do appreciate there are some photographers that respect how people feel, and try to be discrete when taking pics Here it is - Len
  12. Speak for yaself! Len
  13. Don't worry about all that mate - You have made a valid point. And you haven't actually named that particular event, the discussion refers to lots of events as it were. Keep it coming, you never know, doing so may do some good Len
  14. I think it wise for you not to name the event as that would be unfair to them - Filming of events usually does nothing for the atmos that may be there, it's very hard to get that across on film / and the filming may be simply an empty part of an otherwise pretty busy room. I've been to events (Again not naming them) many times over the years, where I have thought to myself 'What's the point?' They may as well just have a record session round someone's house for the amount of people there / Or of course - Just attend another event and add to their numbers through the door. DO THE MATH! All the best, Len
  15. I always read these 'too many events' threads, and feel your pain (Well I used to) The word 'embarrassing' has been used, and it is - I don't care how good the music may be somewhere, if there's just a handful of us old men kicking around, I find it 'embarrassing', and don't want a part of it when it's like that. I thought I'd past caring, but now you have me caring again - Yeh thanks for that! Len

    Curtis

It's a great record though (Well I thought so).......Many moons ago, I DJed at a place called 'North Park' in Kettering, busy night (as they always were back then) I stuck it on, and completely cleared the floor (I think that's the point this 'pattern' started for me) Anyway, I was shocked / mortified / devastated, and to be honest, almost in tears (being so young) Then this bloke leaned over the decks...."Oy mate, was it you that played Curtis?".....I 'admitted' it to him (still in bits).....He held his hand out (for a shake), and said....."F*cking nice one!"........It was almost as if he was sticking his fingers up to everyone else in the room! (Another 'moment' I will never forget) Slightly off-topic, but a nice story I guess. Len
  17. Thanks to your 'awareness', he's probably still on the scene. Len
  18. The ‘Soul Police’ Rule! Is it a snob thing? - Yes! The ‘Soul Police’ are an organisation that tries to keep the standards up (The law) People seem to think this scene shouldn’t have ‘elitism’, but sorry it’s always been there, and is a part of youth culture that this scene ‘polarizes’. You have to respect this scene from your day one - If you don’t the Soul Police will clamp down on you! (Well they used to) Example - I was at an event when I was a mere 14 year old, and my mates were acting like a load of D*ck Heads on the dance floor. This older lad came over to us and said……”If you lot don’t pipe down, I’ll take you all outside and give you a good hiding!”……I was devastated, as I knew they were being stupid. I sat down with my mates and felt really awkward about what had gone on. This older lad must have noticed, and came over to me. He placed his hand on my shoulder, and said…..”Mate, I know it wasn’t you, it was your mates, you’re alright”…….Winked, and walked off. I’ve never forgotten it. Even at that young age, I had begun to work out that there was a way of conducting myself, having respect for this scene, and those before me. I’m not sure of this ‘PCs’ name, but he was right to put them in their place - They were lucky they didn’t get arrested! / or smacked in the face… Unless anyone else has a different interpretation of what 'The Soul Police' is All the best, Len
  19. Not that I particularly like the derogatory term 'Handbaggers', I do fully understand it being used by people that have been on the scene for a good while, disillusioned at (in their mind) it's demise - It's not what it once was for them. Some people say things that they think are 'the thing to say', and if the person who said this to Stephen Houghton (the starter of this thread) was quite young, as is amusingly indicated in the third post - Just take it with a pinch of salt / ignore it. The second post (from Stevie) sums up how some people do feel, yet eloquently acknowledges that the scene still gives others much enjoyment. And rather than being bitter, I expect focuses on the fantastic memories this scene has provided (You'll have them however you 'did it') So, if you're still doing this thing weekend after weekend - Good for you! All the best, Len P.s - Like em or not - We need policing
  20. Yes mate - 5 nights Santa Monica, then 12 nights Florida. It's so nice to be able to take my family, what with the kids fast growing an' all that (Son Bailey 13 / Daughter Tabitha 10) I feel very privileged to be able to spend record money on this sort of thing, rather than having to sell to feed the kids as it were Len
  21. Yes it (finally) gets noticed, others follow, which pushes up the price of the tune ('In demand') Len
  22. I think it's already started to gradually slide. I predict in five years time lots of people will need to sell to top up their (lack of) pensions, and they will be disappointed when they all do it at the same time. It's had it's final 'resurgence' I think... This will be a positive for us on the whole though Back on topic - A lot of records are 'keepers', so are sometimes described as rare, as in rarely available. All the best, Len
  23. Apologies for delays in getting back to anyone - Believe it or not, I try to steer clear of Soul-source at weekends Thanks again for all the interest, but not thanks for persuading me to sell anything that wasn't even for sale! I have up-dated my list again, which includes a few reductions - I don't really want to reduce any much more, but if struggling still make me an offer (I'm easy to deal with) All the best, Len
  24. Thanks guys - I'll dig it out tonight and put a pic up for your perusal. Sorry to take over your thread swaggy (A bit of advertising for ya) Len
