  1. Interestingly when Oscar Hammerstein (A jew from New York) wrote the lyrics for the musical Show Boat in 1927 he wrote the words in what he thought was the "negro vernaculer" so the title was "CAN'T HELP LOVIN' DAT MAN". Not something that would be acceptable today methinks.
  2. Hey there de-to The movies that you are quoting (apart from OUT OF SIGHT) are contemporary films set in an earlier time period and are using previously released music to add authenticity to the film. There are literally hundreds of such movies out there. I thought this thread was about Original music used on sound tracks.
  3. There are many old famous tunes that were covered by 60's Soul acts. See if you can come up with some. I will start with these 3 1. PORGY & THE MONARCHS - MY HEART CRIES FOR YOU - ORIGINAL - GUY MITCHELL - 1950 2. APRIL STEVENS - WANTING YOU - ORIGINAL TIBBETT & GRACE MOORE - 1930 3. THE VIBRATIONS / BILLY STEWART - SECRET LOVE - ORIGINAL DORIS DAY - 1953 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmP0KLI9P6I https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4l1sHkXWi4w
  4. I guess this must be the most played Northern track that ever came from a movie sound track.
  5. I see that STEVE HORNE was vocalist on the b side - oo er matron it just gets better !!
  6. COTTAGE - VOCAL & INST - came out in '76 on Crystal UK - bloody awful mind. I would love to hear the backing track to J Wyatt
  7. Thinking about it there was a really naff instrumental version of this that came out on an LP not sure if it was ever on a 45 - trying to remember who it was by.
  8. Not sure if anyone has seen this one before - Just love the Record Label - Doubt if they had many hits. I tried to contact the seller but all I got was a mouthful https://www.ebay.com/itm/THE-ORIGINAL-CONTINENTALS-45-Fine-Fine-Frame-FELLATIO-Doo-Wop-A558-/230907109009?pt=Music_on_Vinyl&hash=item35c322de91
  9. What !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  10. Surely you mean this one
  11. Here is one I have been pushing for a while now - simply brilliant and a real floor packer in our neck of the woods - plus don't forget The Sounds Of Lane - Tracks to your mind - pisses all over Hey Sah Lo Ney
  12. This is not THE CAT WALK it is the other side LITTLE BIT OF SOUL. When this booted in the early 70's they put the labels on the wrong sides and because most people have got a bootleg they think this is THE CAT WALK even Kev Roberts who put this up on one of his compilations mis-titled it. When it was first played at the Mecca by Tony Jebb it was the other side that got played and it is definitely THE CAT WALK - here it is
  13. Don't know about a "cover up" always thought it was a known sound - picked one up from Contempo 1971 whilst trying to get a copy of San Remo's - Festival Time which was the biggest Instrumental sound at the time. Was soon overtaken by Cigarette Ashes though.
  14. Defo Steve Mancha - groovesville
  15. Does anyone out there know MARION CHRISTOPHER - I THANK YOU JESUS - CHRIST 1 ? It has the exact same backing track as Diane Lewis - I Thank You Kindly - Wand 1183. I have been pushing this one for a while now but no one seems to have ever heard of it. A brilliant piece of Gospel Northern with that classic Detroit backing.
  16. The Walk was played at The Twisted Wheel and was a big Mod tune in the late 60's. All of this before the term Northern Soul had been invented. At one time it was a big ticket item on the original UK London label - came out over here in '58 and you could also get it on a 78. With the inclusion of some of the Belgium Popcorn scene tunes into Northern play lists in recent times some very early tracks have had an airing. How about GUY MITCHELL - 99 YEARS - I think queen Victoria used to dance to that one !!! Whoever wrote the James Bond music had definitely been listening to this track.
  17. Thanks for that Ady.
  18. Can't really put "Clean Gene" in this category - he has sold millions of records and had a career that most would sell their soul for - I don't think international recognition is a true measure of success - Our lovely Cliff Richard is not much liked Stateside after all. Mind you come to think of it he's not much liked over here either
  19. You are drifting dangerously towards the Saville/Glitter side of things here mate - better take some bromide in your tea and calm down a bit
  20. I don't know if this question has ever been asked before and perhaps Adey is the man to answer it but I was just listening to - The Philips Sisters - Where did you stay last Night - Romark and one of the vocalists sound like Ty Karim. Given that it is a Kent Harris record could it be the late great lady herself ?????
  21. Thanks Pete that is exactly what I did.
  22. Actually Pete, when I think about it, you are quite right, Northern Soul has never really been about Soul music per se and I have to admit that I have been responsible for launching some bloody awful tracks onto the northern scene in my time. For every "George Blackwell - Can't lose my Head"" that I was proud of there was a "Shakers - One Wonderful Moment" that I was to embarrassed to take credit for (until now!!!!!). Frosty
  23. Absolutely spot on with this - we have a "Soul Club" here in Jersey that organises events on a regular basis but it might as well be called a "social club" because once you stray from the Northern top 50 the dance floor empties.
  24. I was doing an afternoon spot playing some really obscure unknown stuff and one of the other Dj's came over with his camera phone and started taking pictures of what I had on the decks. Nice!! The best one for repeats was this other DJ who played only CD's and they were all his own download home burn kind of things. He had forgotten to bring his glasses and the track listings were hand written on scraps of paper, it was a Motown session and he played IT TAKES TWO 3 times in an hour and the same people got up and danced to it every time!!!!!
