  1. It had been rumoured that Don Robey who started out his career managing a nightclub in LA had close links with the Mafia. After having returned to Texas he started another nightclub in Houston called the Peacock Club which is where he got the name from for his label group of Duke/Peacock/Sure Shot and Back Beat. He had a bad reputation for not only always carrying a gun but for also putting on the table when negotiating contracts..
  2. I try not to comment on these auction results usuaLly....but ?!
  3. butch if I remember correct ?
  4. 13 - 14 years ago I said exactly that on here ... and since a good few years its exactly whats happening. just like the doo wop (and blues) scenes had to suffer from a lack of new recoprd buyers to keep up the demand their prices and values of collections came down in a radical way. The mediocre and lower priced soul 45s are getting harder and harder to sell. The big old classics between 200 and 500 gbp kept their price and are being picked up now too by the few new collectors who are getting into the scene(s) all over the world. The high end items seem to continue to rise price-wise. Must say that esp since the last 12 months there is an almost unexplainable run on high end soul 45s. I certainly cant explain that but some prices that can be seen week in week out are just simply ridiculous. I wonder who pays them and really feel a bit ashamed and pityful for them. Anyway, better get prepared that our precious soul 45s that are not top end rare stuff will drop in value radical in the next coming years. If you are like me and collect for your own pleasure nth to be afraid off really as you will still be able to enjoy them. If you are/were a hot boxer or were even thinking of collecting as an investment (silly I know but there are some out there..) better get your tissues ready now...
  5. wouldnt say cheap, always been a tougher one price-wise. 150 gbp but it sure wasnt as if you could sell hundreds of them immedaitely and at once if you know what I mean. By far not the rarest on the label. remember when moerer had tons of the chex 45s late eighties/start of the nineties. amazing to see the rise in demand on this title lately..it sure isnt what you would call mixing in well with what else is popular at the moment, so whats the reason anyone know ?

  17. sad to read. rip
  18. haha!no wonder, neither "northern" nor "soul" mentioned in the headline and even the searched for title "competition" is missing. ah , that reminds me on the good old days of eay when I still had time to crawl the whole ebay on a daily basis to find bargains like this )
  19. as I said earlier...I remembered seeing it credited to someoneelse as well. the other release is credited to one pervis lavawn, sadly I nly found this weak scan on the net but you get an impression. also found matt finewine mentioning this release on his show so maybe he can upload a proper scan lol and just found these old threads https://www.soulsides.co.uk/philladelphia/BLACKJACK.htm
  20. must say phil, you are right on both. I have the jesse slaughter since ages and remember deciding quite fast against ever playing it out as it just didnt made it thru quality control. the bonus of the good flipside safed the 45 a place in the collection whereas carl holmes had to leave Berlin after only a handfull of spins in the hot summer of 2007. remember seeing the same title on blackjack credited to another artist...was it pervis herder ?
  21. ..but am also convinced you have a point there ;)
  22. knowing david flynn as a usually reliable and valid source to quote I indeed dared to be easily convinced by his statement.
  23. think I got to know the record thru the Capitol Soul Club days as well. Bought it off Anglo soon after at a pricely sum. the sleeve still has tims original writing "first copy we ever had" on it. quite scarce to be found and every time I see a copy I am amazed to see how little the interest and therefore sales price is...maybe that type of midtempo-ish mid sixties girl soul its just not en vogue anymore. just like that beautiful lydia o`connor that springs to my mind immediately when thinking what I used to combine with mary wheeler back then. anyway, if your lucjky I amsure you can get one for 350 gbp these days...but occasions are very little..
  24. used to be quite en vogue overe here ten years ago and I think I still got a spare, I`ll have a look..
