Several spring to mind to epitomise Northern Soul - rareness shouldn't come into it at all - its all about the beat and danceability!
Mine would have to be - Invitations - What's Wrong With Me Baby, Fascinations - Girls . . ., Bobby Sheen's Doctor Love and I really like Pete's suggestion of Jimmie Raye's Philly Dog Around The World - an absolute bloody powerhouse of a record!
People piling out of the fire escapes I read somewhere.
People were always on the fire escape - right behind the dancefloor - it got so hot in there on a Saturday night!
If the Shredded Wheat advert upset you and you're not convinced that the Northern Soul film was made out of love and dedication then you must have burst a fuckin bloodvessel seeing Wigans Ovation on Top of the Pops - now that was cringeworthy!!
Personal choice I know but surely the Contours Just a Little Misunderstanding is the stand-out dance number, closely followed by -
Temptations - I Want A Love I Can See
Tempts again! - Little Miss Sweetness
Four Tops - I'll Turn To Stone
also contenders - There's No Stopping Us Now, Stevies hey Love, Come Spy With Me and the Tops I Got a Feeling.
Just noticed this - I was at four of those nights - mind you there were loads of great acts on at the Plaza and at Stafford as well in the main ballroom and Wolvo Civic has always been famous for its acoustics - it was chosen to host loads of BBC In Concert series for this reason.
Sure Thing is a very good CD cover programme - a little complicated to start with but will allow most combinations of artwork and text. It can be downloaded free from any of the major download sites with its crack.
Close call for me - between Miracles Tracks of my Tears, Four Tops Baby I Need Your Lovin, and the superlative Suspicion, but I'll give it to the Isley's This Old Heart Of Mine - the first of my many, many TMG purchases!
What a soppy you lot are! snivelling into your hankies i bet. Oh alright then - The Artistics - This Heart Of Mine or Percy Sledge's version of Any Day Now! - there I've done it and I'm crying now.
Cindy Lauper recorded a very good blues album last year featuring B.B. King, Ann Peebles, Jonny Lang and Allen Toussaint! Maybe you should get your head out of your arse and give people a chance!
Gil Scott Heron - fuckin crap
Detroit Executives - ditto
Case of Tyme - ditto
Any of the manufactured shit/b*llocks from wigan - i.e. Footsie / Wigans Ovation - ditto x2
explain yourself - why would you willingly want anyone to police anything you enjoy? do the records sound any different? can't you dance to em? free love, live and let live - are they bad things?
Luckily most of the punters in the clubs ain't in this esoteric band of bigheads like you lot - ha ha! - just listen to yourselves - there's a real world out there - take part in it now and again and lose the elitist approach to life!
