Serious questions: When bidding on a Manship auction can you see who elses takes part? I understand that all you can see is the highest bid if you weren't the lucky winner. Or do you mean you'd like to know at least the highest bid in a TB auction?

Giving this a little bump, I thought people would snap it up within a few minutes considering the fact that this is very rare black issue is priced @ what a demo goes for. Last issue that sold here on Soul Source was 200 quid... May consider trading it for some german soul 45s...

Maybe TB is a member of this forum? Every there and then I've been contacted via PMs sent from members who haven't posted one single word for years and use their accounts just for selling/buying. Strange but not too uncommon. Marc, I know you know TB personally. I don't so you can speak with authority on that. But if he was a good businessman he shall take notice of what is said about him, no matter if positive or negative. All I can comment is that I check out his auctions every few weeks just out of curiosity. I found him having a go at John Manship quite entertaining but on the other hand just a few weeks later TB himself was auctioning stuff that was far from rare and definitely set sale.

It translates to "With Umbrella, Charme and Bowler Hat" and was the german title for the Avengers. I actually think the german title suits the show much better than the original title. I mean, they're not really out and about to seek avenge are they? But they are damn smart and so good looking (What was the title again of the episode with Emma Peel wearing a pike nut necklace and corsage? "sin queen" or so?) But thanks for the release details, will have a look out for it.

Well, I was willing to pay that as I had the money ready and the sleeve is rare. After so many years of collecting soul 45s I'm still surprised about what sort of german releases I come across. I don't know if Joerg is the winning bidder or not. All I have is an Ebay ID which is registered in Austria (for whatever reason I can see the winning bidder ID of some of the auctions I placed a bid recently??)

the rarer or dearer a record is the more difference in value there is if it has a picture sleeve or not (IMO). In many cases a german 45 w/out picture sleeve is worth less than 50% of a copy with a picture sleeve. Best examples are early german Tamla-Motown releases and it's predecessors on CBS, HUUUGE difference in values and prices actually paid between with sleeve and without sleeve.

No, it's the Mood-Mosaic one I picked up. I don't think I've ever saw a german release of the Marketts take so I don't know if it came out in Germany at all. I used to have french (?) EP with it on which also featured the Avengers theme and I think Batman as well but not too sure about that. Here's a pic of the picture sleeve for the first german release of Mood-Mosaic, after it became the theme tune to "Beat club" it was reissued with a different sleeve.

I always associate the Mood-Mosaic version with black/white german TV as it was the theme tune to a legendary 1960's show called "beat club" (bit like "top of the pops"). Though I'm too young to have actually watched the show when it was screened the first time I watched plenty of reruns in the 70s. I recently picked up the first german release of "touch of velvet" and was surprised to find another good instrumental on the flip "bond street PM". did this get any plays at any time?

Really? Must check at home, got the UK issue and the german one. Never really compared them as "too many people" is not really a fave of mine. But they have different flipsides as well so might be two different versions too...

You're probably right about Charles Sheffield, I just thought I'd seen it somewhere that it was recorded or released in the late 50s but didn't verify that before posting. But according to the Richard Berry discography on www.louielouie.net "have love will travel" was released in 1959 on Flip 349. But in the end, may be it 1959 or 1960, it's still pretty early isn't it?

Transferred their "Payin' our dues" album to my iPod recently and when I played "lost without you" for the first time I was complete in awe Without a doubt the best beat ballad Teddy Randazzo and Little Anthony & Imperials ever did! As good as "Hurt so bad", "Not the same", "Yesterday has gone", "Call me the joker", etc. are, "lost without you" surpasses them all. Everything you need in a good beat ballad, big production orchestra, drama lyrics, the lot. Very highly recommended! And to come back to the topic of this thread: I'd like to see them performing "lost without you"

I don't know if I understand your question but anyway, the earliest 45s played on the scene outside the R&B rooms (i.e. 45s that gained a wider acceptance) that I know of were Charles Sheffield - Voodoo working (1957/58?) and Richard Berry - Have love will travel (1958/59?). But if you're talking about the earliest records that had that sort of sound that later became known as Northern Soul, the first one that springs to my mind is Jimmy Ruffin - Don't feel sorry for me. From 1962 but sounds much much later...

I agree on Melba Moore. Even if it's played to death for some, it's pure quality. I disagree on Carla Thomas. As good as it is, it always sounds "empty" to me and IMO it's pretty obvious it's an unfinished demo. How about Chuck Jackson "what's with this loneliness"? Now that's a goodie...
