Not from me i'm afraid, I'm not that much of a movie fan apart from Star Wars (excl. episodes 1-3). But I'm going to try and watch some of the movies that have been nominated so far.

There are a number of cover versions, Dionne Warwick, Maxine Brown, Freddie North, Tommy Hunt, Brenda & The Tabulations. Each one is good in its own right but none come close to Big Maybelle IMO.

Maybe I just didn't get it, but you're not talking about biopics are you?

In the YT vid it sounds like the record starts right after the clapping if this is of any help.

Simon, you shouldn't have posted that audio clip. Because now I start to have a growing obsession with this track hearing the isolated vocals for the first time. What a song! Anyone wants to trade to two annoying teenage kids for a copy? 😉

As a Mello Souls copy on Discogs was mentioned twice now, do you mean guys mean it sold on Discogs? No evidence it sold via Discogs from what I can see. Or was it listed and pulled?

I dont think there is any Shrine connection but the horns in this ballad sound pretty shrine-ish to me:

To me Mello Souls is the best Northern records I ever heard. Uptempo, haunting tune, brill vocals, low-fi recording. It has everything I want in a Northern Soul record. Wish I had the dosh. I wouldn't be surprised if this goes well into 5 figures.

I guess we all remember when Fred Parris was a 15-20 quid record in the 90s when there was no real demand for beat ballads. But I'm surprised it went for 244. It sure went for almost double that only a year or two ago. Speaking of, does anyone know where the demand for it comes from? Lowrider collectors?

Personally I think there's nothing wrong with pitching up and down a notch or two if this makes a record more danceable. As long as it doesn't make the record sound quirky in any way. And as long as not all records in a dj set are played pitched.

A local record store asked me to play a few mellow soul and rocksteady tunes for Record Store Day 2023.
