Great minds think alike Pete. I thought it filled the floor of the oldies room when it was played in the rare/underplayed room. Seriously, as said before funky edge tune have been played for well over a decade but in recent years that stuff gained momentum. DJ's tried to find more and more new sounds that fit in. My opinion is that they clearly went too far.

Don't take it personal but this is exactly what I had in mind when I said all that funky stuff is sh*te. This got nothing to do with Northern or Rare Soul.

Tell you what. I agree. What a tune. Although I don't see it as dancefloor material. NB: And not funk or even funky IMO. Just so soulful it hurts

Chalky/Gerd, thanks for posting some truly awesome beat ballads. Ray Pollard is deep soul in my books, but a gem nonetheless. Jimmy Radcliffe - My ship best version by far. Gave my copy to the missus and regret it right now . Little Ann is a gem. First heard it on a tape a mate recorded from the Great Yarmouth weekender radio shows back in 1990/1991 and immediately fell in love with it. Tho have to say it's really at the very slow end of what I consider a beat ballad. Here's another one for you, Rocky Roberts - If he could. Might be a tad too fast for a beat ballad but it's such a full production in your face sort of sound it surely fits in this thread. It's from a western movie "Tom Dollar". The only releases I know are a french EP and an argentinian 33 rpm 7"

Russ, that's just black/white thinking. It seems that to you it's either up the funky soul road or down the crap-substandard-NS road? Is there anything in between for you? I'm pretty open minded, always rather listening to newies/lesser known stuff than oldies. my ideal world of NS incorporates many different styles in black music. But funk isn't one of them. Period. In the beginning 'new wave of funky soul' was quite refreshing and was really what it said on the tin, funky soul. John Harris, stuff like that. And the records were really good! But it seems that as dj's were struggling to find new stuff they went more and more down the funk road and ended up in funk country, no soul. And that's the stuff I think is sh*te. Another period. Maybe you and everbody else who's championing funky soul should challenge yourself: Is it really still danceable soul music or is it funk?

updated. Free postage if anyone buys the other two. -
Paul, both times I guested at TOS nobody was abusive to me but folks were grabbing my beer. I'd rather had a a "f*ck you" than being thirsty.

You want examples of which funky stuff is sh*te? Pretty easy, take 90% of what's been played over the last few years. Remaining 10% are just crap.
-
Pure Sh*te. It's not 'funky soul' it's just funk. And I hate funk.

Jackie Edwards On Jm Auction Taking Things To A New High/low
Benji replied to Pete S's topic in Look At Your Box
Must be dutch. Didn't come out in Germany as far as I know. Or are you mixing it with "Come back girl"? -
There's nothing in it that lets me assume he's joking. Quite the opposite, it makes him look like a chancer. Or maybe it's my lack of sense of humour as a german?
-
Mick Smith is the seller. Thought he had more integrity
-
Actually, I think this is a good question. Why are there records pretty expensive even though they're mediocre and never played anywhere? Supply and demand determine price of a record. But what if there's no demand? The Curtis Davis record is a good example. As good as it is (I like it) it's not a record with a huge demand for it, is it?
-
It's an auction for 19 records not just for one.
-
No, you're right. 1.000's of people see Manship's auctions. Many tend to take whatever he says for facts when infact sometimes they're just assumptions.
-
-
Another big surprise this one. This usually sells for less than 50 (?) I think I wanted only 30 quid for the definitely rarer german MCA release. Or did demand increase?
-
He said Diva Detroit. I take he tried to describe some sort of 'sophisticated Detroit girl group' sound and didn't imply that the group was from Detroit. Does that make sense?
