  1. England quarter finals , Scotland a jolly jaunt home after 3 matches Winners France or Spain.
  2. Any updates on Elsie on her joining in this discussion especially about her claims singing on multiple records by the likes of the Manhattans, Spinners etc. Be interesting to hear from her.
  3. Got the be their best without a doubt.
  4. That is how it should be I am surprised young kids want to listen to music made 50 years or more ago however great it is but it's their choice and if they break away from the older people on the scene "more power to em" I find it strange to see young kids at Soul events with people in their sixties, if the kids are the future of northern as they should be events that attract that age bracket is the future.
  5. Seems to me all the diehards can do is enjoy the music and the scene which still exists for the true devotees and cock a deaf un to the explosion of the bandwagon jumpers and all the trash what goes with it. Still some great music been issued by companies, unreleased or reissues to satisfy most of us and some select venues still with the ethos of the scene.
  6. Nothing to do with soul music other than the venue setting and the stereotype dancing.
  7. Fortunately this site and a few other venues still provide a outlet for people who frequent this site to still enjoy the music and discuss it too. It seems like a matter of letting divs get on with it and holding our heads high and trying not to watch YouTube videos which I find quite hard a bit like not watching the bad things on the news you know it's going to be grim but cannot help it.
  8. To me the whole point of going out to venues was to listen to records that were played that I could not hear anywhere else and did not own and put together by a forward thinking dj with a ear to the dance floor. Going out to hear music played off a laptop, memory stick is not what northern soul is about, ok for the nightclub knocking music out for the punters on a weekend. I have embraced technology for my home listening but for the soul events vinyl only for me.
  9. Sound clip on Charly website.
  10. What happened to the music? it just seems about dancing now with the "Johnny come latelys" back in my day the music was the bug and the dancing followed. Most of the newcomers seem to just want to get out on a weekend get pi**ed and dance in the same formulated way. Glad that the music is my passion and still going strong 50+ years later. Good job there is still some events with the original ethos and sites like this where like minded individuals can have discussion.
  11. Can't see your problem, you ask a question and awaited answers and most people said Reggae at Soul do,s was a no, which is fine by me. I like reggae but I keep it separate when I play it at home, i.e I will have a few days when that is all I play but never mix it with soul to different in my view to play together , so going out and hearing it mixed with soul is defo a no even at the end of the night.
  12. Thought some may be interested in this video Martha doing some soul instead of her usual hits.

  13. How people dance is a totally an individual thing to me, I am enthusiastic at best What seems to bring the scene in to ridicule these days is the baggies, towels, vests etc. not a good look these days on anyone even worse on the over 60s Leave the baggies to the Bay City Rollers reunions.
  14. At least the venue is at the right place Blackpool home of the circus.
  15. Soul is my main love but I am partial to reggae and ska but at a event not for me no problem though with a different room playing reggae.
  16. The femme backup on the Philly tracks were credited to the Sigma Sweethearts.
  17. Great album and great to see the Aretha track on a new release and Pickett too an all round top LP.
  18. Don't think anyone disputes the fact that there were two groups named The Manhattans this topic went a bit awry with the posts saying one of the Debonairs said they did backup with the Carnival group.
  19. The Donnie Elbert track is a big favourite of mine the stereo version I have on an All Platinum sampler blows away the 45 cut though, the strings really come to the fore.
  20. According an article I have just read the femme backup on the Carnival stuff by TheManhattans was provided by The Lovettes.
  21. Way the quote from one of the Debonaires reads to me is that the backing vocals were recorded in the sixties and used later in the seventies, improbable at best.
