  5. Good answer Dave but yours is still going though , what are your sales like are they pretty much as always or have they suffered in recent years.
  6. As someone who has always enjoyed reading about soul music nearly as much as listening i,ve subscribed to all the following mags Blues And Soul , Black Music , Black Echoes , Shades Of Soul, SKM , and the great Voices From The Shadows and InThe Basement am i the only one that since getting on the internet my reading of mags has totally gone, i know most of the above are now defunct but even if they were not i could not see me still subscribing to any other than Shadows i just find that all the knowledge i need can be found on the net. Am i alone in this has the net killed the Soul mag. I have even culled all my old copies of everything except my old copies of Voices.

Side 2 - 1/ Ode To Billy Joe( part 1) 2/ Ode To Billy Joe( part 2) 3/ Cornbread And Butter. 4/ Mercy, Mercy, Mercy. 5/ Round Midnight
  8. Whenever i need a little lift the Artistics - It's Gonna Be Alright never fails to put a spring back in my step a great track. Plus the album it comes from is a true classic.
  9. Yes the mans a genius.
  10. Don't know about the most soulful ever we have a wealth of material to go at but these two never fail to move me Betty Lavette - Your Turn To Cry and the ultimate wrist slasher Doris Duke - I Don't Care Anymore taken from my all time fave lp I'm A Loser.
  11. Didn't go to the Chapel All Nighter , was that the only one thought there was a big stink about it , i think it made the local rag The Advertiser, along the lines of been held in a former place of worship. Only went to 1 Harlem Shuffle at the Bailey Suite then on to the now demolished Herringthorpe Leisure Centre.
  12. Couple of flyers here the Bailey Suite one was around 89 the other early 90s i think.
  13. The Sound Superb lp also contains the brilliant Hey Love too. Easy to get for about 7 quid.
  14. Never on a single also on a budget album on Sounds Superb called Uptight .
  15. Yes thats what it reminds me of .
  16. Been searching for one for the last 25 years thought i had found a copy but when i placed my order it had been sold, only a twenty quid record and British only. The record is The Original Africans - Sting Me on President.
  17. Mark Barkan is a very strange one wrote pop for groups including the Archies plus wrote the Banana Splits theme tune and was musical director for the show , but also turned his hand to soul music the one that springs to mind is Kurt Harris Emperor of My Baby's Heart plus his name is on a few other Northern tracks. He also wrote Stepping Out Of The Picture Johhny Maestro, and the oft recorded Help Yourself plus the awful Lost Summer Love Lorraine Silver.
  18. Great , but the polar bear looks bored rigid.
  19. Are the names suggested on the list for a poll ok ?
  20. You picked a nice track.
  21. Nearly 56 and buying/listening to soul music since i was 14 and still hearing something i have not heard before and that will probably be that way till i die that Soulmine has got a deep seam.
  22. The names of artists who got more than one mention by different ss members is JACKIE WILSON MARVIN GAYE JAMES BROWN AL GREEN LITTLE WILLIE JOHN OTIS REDDING LITTLE RICHARD Take a poll from that list of talent
  23. Include all the names listed on this topic up to today.
  24. Would a poll be appropriate for this topic , but we have to vote who we think influenced the beginning of Soul Music, not our personal favourite artists.
