  1. Agree there is loads of retro soul music out there but how do you know it is the young uns that are buying it I would have thought it was people like us on here who are buying the bulk of it and even then it is only selling in small quantities.
  2. I would have thought the reason deterring youngsters from joining the scene is that it is an ancient music and why would youngsters want to be associated with music from a bygone age. As much as we all love soul music as a modern music its days are long gone even most soul produced today is mainly retro. Black music has moved on we and are the only ones still carrying the torch for the 60s/70s type of soul music.
  3. Thought Dave first mentioned this track when he was writing for Black Music. As for the record a strange one some days it grates on me on hearing it other days it sounds good.
  4. Stopped buying years ago , I would rather buy cd,s or stream. The ones I have I never play and just hold on to for sentimental reasons and selling seems too much trouble .
  5. Soul to me in its purest sense could be Northern , Deep . Sweet whatever name you call it . Thankfully like Dave my taste takes in all styles of soul music and thats why I,m still in to this music after nearly 50 years.
  6. Dave definitely had a problem with Jagger his writing shows as much, from his loathing of The Stones cover versions to Jaggers sound alike Don Covay voice. The rest only Dave knows the real truth and sadly he is not here to defend himself. Even if he did overstate a few stories his columns were always entertaining and opened up new artists and sounds to eager record buyers as myself who were just finding their feet to soul music and I am grateful for that .
  7. Still going Pete , not all the original band obviously ! https://www.kokomo.band/
  8. Kokomo were also a funk/soul band formed in the seventies and supported many soul acts in that period.
  9. Last time I heard of John Abbey he was the founder of Ichiban Records which put out some great stuff , unfortunately it is now defunct I believe. Wasn't he also married in the seventies to soul artist Tamiko Jones ?
  10. Thank you , someone who gets this music making thing, without profit recorded music ends.
  11. I do not think it has been mentioned but label variations as in the typos , artist , title etc could just be a printing variation. Labels are printed first the background and Label name on large sheets then cut down and held in stock at the printers then the titles etc would then be added later on request of the record company . The difference in types could just be the compositor using different fonts for the printing blocks when assembled prior to overprinting the title etc.
  12. Got a couple you may be interested in Chalky , one for an 8th Anniversary nighter at The Wilton , Whitwood and one for a mini allnighter at The Little London Caravan Park Torksey. If you want them pm your address and I will pop them in the post .
  13. Cheers Steve Seeing a bird I've not seen before especially in my own garden gives me as much thrill as hearing a top tune for the first time
  14. Seen one of those in my garden today , first time I've seen one anywhere in my 60 years . It did not use my feeders but I will keep watching, the one in your picture I would assume is the female the one I saw was the male.
  15. Always loved this, flip to '' Cracked Up Over You '' written by Eddie Floyd.
  16. There's one on here in pictures 'Soul Artists' page 6 , probably need permission to use it I would imagine.
  17. Also the Soulful Symphony got a US release on the 'Right On' label .
  18. Great picture of a lovely bird that seems to be more abundant now in gardens in the towns and cities, waste land perfect growing conditions for Teasel And Thistle and their ability to take advantage of feeders. Had 7 on my feeders today , the most I have counted around the feeders was 30 in the summer. I always thought they were shy birds but there as bold as brass round here.
  19. I was talking about Afternoon Of The Rhino which Spain Pete brought up in the thread not the Frank Wilson record. Think this thread has deviated more than any other thread I have ever read.
  20. More like because it is '' played out'' as in overplayed and its day has gone .
  21. Franks lyric sounds good to me , and his writing over the years ain,t shabby either. LOL
  22. Another one from me - Barbara Mason '' Lady Love '' ( loves the thing ) . Some nice modern dancers mixed with some lovely ballads.
  23. The Isleys is a great album , love listening to this on a hot summers day laid on the recliner in the garden
  24. That album and Millie Jackson's Caught Up lp changed my direction in soul music , it was never just the beat after those two.
  25. These 3 still get plays by me and I ever tire of. Roy C - Sex And Soul Dramatics - A Dramatic Experience Swamp Dogg - Gag A Maggot
