I was in awe of Kathy Kirby at Bradford Queens Hall, she frightened the life out of me also For me, Kathy Kirby was the best female dancer of all time If Kathy ever reads this Come on lady, put on your dancing shoes again, and show us how it's done Ali (Age 18) xx

The documentary was about "Northern Soul", not "Rare Soul", granted the two intertwine at times, but for me, the two are different and as much as I like stroking some-ones chin, I also like stepping back in time. A documentary/film on Rare Soul would not cut the mustard with the masses (blimey they'll even struggle with the "Northern Soul" concept) Surely the whole beauty of the Rare scene, is just that, it's rare, so keep it hidden I say

The silly thing is I quite enjoyed listening to The Snake, it's not a tune that I hear anymore, and it took me back to when I first heard it, a mod club called Cloud Nine in Manchester in 1985 at the tender age of 16. I didn't mind listening to any of the tunes played tonight (in the comfort of my own home) as they all mean't something to me somewhere down my Timeline

As well as your posts making complete sense to me that made me howl just as much as PW's leaving your teeth at the door comment

I was rushing my post somewhat, whilst multi-tasking, cheese savoury in the gob, iphone in hand, eye on the clock. I couldn't afford to be late back from lunch as well, blimey, I'd already blamed my poor time-keeping on Northern Soul my boss would throw the book at me had I tried to use it again ..... in the same day Thankfully, you & others have elaborated on my lunchtime rant and got the message across much clearer

Haven't read the whole of the thread so not sure if people are, or aren't getting their knickers in a twist, but I was late for work this morning because I watched it, was is worth it?? Hell yes!!! I thought PW came over extremely well & I howled at his false teeth comment (still chuckling when I think about it) I'm certainly not going to lose sleep over it, mock it, or dissect it. My life's too short Well done BBC !! Ali x ps it was great apologising to my boss for my lateness, blamed it on Northern Soul, something I've never owned up to before especially on a Monday morning ;o) Right, better sign off, I have some time to make up x

Philadelphia International: The Re-Edits - Out 16/01/12
Alison H replied to Ian Dewhirst's topic in All About the SOUL
Whatever you do then please don't start a thread on Detroit, Chicago, New York, Baltimore or Washington, as I'm sure the good folk on Soulsource would not welcome holiday snaps of me taking a bite out of the Big Apple, or hanging out of a glass box 103 floors up the Sears Willis Tower, or getting a parking ticket in front of the Whitehouse ........ though I have got some cool photo's of Detroit (but I'll save them for another thread ) Right, back to Philly, and the re-edits, courtesy of everywhere Will Ralph/Simon/Anyone? have them for sale at the Hilton. I know it's 10 days before the official release date, but it would make a lot of sense (to me) if I could get my grubby little hands on the re-edits before the 16th Cheers Ali x P.S. Get a proper job -
Philadelphia International: The Re-Edits - Out 16/01/12
Alison H replied to Ian Dewhirst's topic in All About the SOUL
Hi Ian Here's a few more pics to wet your appetite The day I called in, Leroy made me feel very welcome, even though he told Dexter's voicemail that it was Alison from London Such a friendly and down to earth feel about the place, I met a current artist (a lovely young lady who's name escapes me) It was this future songstress who took our picture If Leroy ever reads this, thanks for being so charming, and welcoming me into your fold. You are a credit to PIR Sorry for not calling back and hanging out when I said I would (a tropical storm got in the way) Please hold that rare footage for the next time I visit as there WILL be a next time Great downloads Ian, they're playing as I type.... can't wait for January !!! All the very best Ali x -

Alison H replied to Ian Dewhirst's topic in All About the SOUL
Hey Ian I never told you that I used to have a Saturday Job at PIR did I ? Me & my boss, ok, it's in the Souvenir Shop A really friendly place to hang out. My boss friend, Leroy, phoned Dexter Wansel while I was there, for me to say hello (I'd previously met Dexter at the Minehead weekender) but Dexter was in recording. A great place, so I wish you well with these c.d's I'll certainly be buying -

I went in the early 90's & can't remember that, mind you, I can't remember much from back then, other than a giant beetle (size of an alsation) crawling across the dancefloor, & my vision was like looking through strawberry jam !!??? (sure they used to put something in the water) I'll check with some friends, as their recollection may be better than mine Another great nighter that will be up there with my favourites x

Religiously, and then Intermittently, subscribed to Manifesto over the years, kept meaning to renew my last subscription (expired earlier in the year), but life got in the way, however, what a nice surprise to receive a FREE copy of Manifesto this week in the post, nice touch, and it had the desired effect, prompted me to subscribe again. I love surfing the net, but I do enjoy holding something physical in my hand, plus I get satisfaction from looking at my piles

Bradford Queens Hall Basement Photo's And Lost Video Footage 1990
Alison H replied to Barry's topic in All About the SOUL
Oh wow Byrney !!! I've only just clocked the above paragraph (was too busy trying to be Ban Ki Moon earlier ) Great sentiment from Kerso thought it was only me who was being bullied In spite of the turf wars I don't regret a second of my time spent at the Queens Hall (in both rooms) made a lot of friends, great memories, great tunes, great times (for me the BEST time!!) I guess it was all part of the growing up process -
Bradford Queens Hall Basement Photo's And Lost Video Footage 1990
Alison H replied to Barry's topic in All About the SOUL
Woah!! What's happened here guys The word "Rave" was said tongue in cheek, I'll take it back "evaR" I can't speak for Nick, or anyone else who loved that dirty basement, but from my own experience, I was tired of certain people upstairs calling what we had downstairs as "Rave" when they never even ventured down there. That basement room was full to the brim of soul, at times different slants on soul, but nevertheless always SOULFUL ..... through & through !! I loved both upstairs & downstairs at Bradford, but like I said, there was a minority who would dismiss me when I said I was going downstairs, and what I find ironic now, is that these tunes, that were first played downstairs, are now played in the main rooms at some venues/weekenders where they are well received by many (Drizabone - Real Love, Sounds of Blackness - Optimistic are the more common ones) and it kind of makes me sick, but at the end of the day, I also have a sense of pride that I was there when these tunes first broke. Downstairs at Bradford was waaaaay ahead of it's time & I feel blessed that I was part of it Right, can we all kiss & make up now
