  1. Well I'm not exactly "ON THE SCENE" but I can't get my head around these: 1. King For a Day-Stewart Ames (Crap city: torture for me to hear this) 2. I'll Be All Alone-Barbara Redd (I don't hate this 45, but it has no business getting played on a Northern Soul or even a Belgium Popcorn night in my opinion) 3. Carbon Copy-Larry Trider (a superb Belgium Popcorn record, but a HORRIBLE Northern Soul record) And to Mr. Darcy-"Country Boy" by Henry C & the Ivy Leaguers is AWESOME! Dave Moore, Mark Holmes and Russ Vickers and I were driving around Pittsburgh two years ago listening to that song and they all pointed out that the chorus was to the tune of Elvis-Burning Love. What a great day we had digging in "the Burgh" - lots of laughs... -Jas and whoever said "Head and Shoulders", if you hear the instrumental track on its own, it'll give you a new found appreciation.
  2. Had a brilliant chat on the phone with Al Johnson of the Unifics and he told me that a UK publication once published, in his opinion, the most extensive discography of his work. Can anyone tell me what mag that was and where I can get a couple of copies? I'd like one and Al doesn't even have one for himself, so I'd like to accommodate him if I can. If anyone's got some questions and input about Al and/or the Unifics, please feel free to speak up. I'm putting together a project and want to make it as comprehensive as possible. Thanks! Jason
  3. Ref. the Chris Clark-look closely at the label "YOU'RE FAVORITE ARTISTS ARE ON WEED!" HAAAAAAHAAAA! APPARENTLY SOME ARE ON CRACK TOO! 1. I CAN SEE HIM LOVONG YOU-RAY DAHROGUE-POLYDOR 2. I CAN'T TAKE NO MORE-JASON CORD-CHAPTER 3 (SAME AS TED WILSON) 3. WHEREVER YOU WERE-HOLLY GOLIGHTLY PLUS PJ HARVEY STARTS SINGING "IT'S YOUR VOODOO WORKING" AT THE END OF ONE OF HER SONGS ON THE "RID OF ME" LP. -J.
  4. And I know exactly in Baltimore where he probably bought his copy, too. Roadhouse Oldies I'd bet. I sent my Scottish friend James Maxwell over in 1997 to buy one. I almost bought the remaining copies to keep them out of site. It's a good book for certain images, although the quality is poor. I've taken a few things out of it for There's That Beat! and worked some photoshop magic on the images. My copy still sits next to my computer. Back in 1992 when I was trying to learn more about NS, this book and Craig Moerer lists were all I had to go on. Everything was guesswork back in those days. I was living in West Virginia and making regular trips to Pittsburgh to get all my sounds. Simon Soussan's guide really served me well for a period of time. Now you can jump on ebay and be an expert overnight. I almost never look at price guides now. What's the point? -Jas
  5. The really sad thing is that Mike told me he discarded all sorts of stuff way back when. Not only records, but master tapes, unreleased things, memorabilia, photos, etc. This was so long ago and a lot of it was disposable to him at the time. He regrets it trmendously now. As for "Bari Track" and other songs, he often would go in, do the job and have no idea of where the finished product would end up and who would sing on it in the end, in some cases. It just indicates the sheer volume of work he was doing at the time. His schedule was constantly full of sessions and he just worked so hard that he didn't always got to sit back and hear the finished product. It wasn't until soul fans put all their heads together that he could start to assess his body of work. You can't help but wonder what kinds of things got lost in the shuffle though. -Jason
  6. Nice to see Mike Terry getting mentions on the site. I'm going to be talking to him on the phone this coming week and will let him know about this thread. He does get on the net from time to time. If anybody has some questions, just fire away and I'll be sure and pass them along. Mike has stayed in touch with me quite a bit since I interviewed him for TTB! #4. He calls and checks in every so often and keeps me updated on his work. But while you're at it, don't forget the MOTOWN! MT has related to me that he is particularly proud of his solos like "Where Did Our Love Go". And on the NS side, he's also really proud the Esquires 45 he did on Wand. Will keep you posted and make Mike aware of the appreciation that Soul Sourcers are showing him. THANKS EVERYBODY! -Jason

  8. AWESOME! THANKS BOB! -Jas PS. We've got "Surprise Party" taken care of. Thanks so much!
  9. Can somebody do me a high-resolution 300 DPI JPEG scan of this 45? I just need the labels. I'm preparing a piece about George Kerr and it's vital. Credit would be given, plus a free issue of There's That Beat! Need it ASAP! Mail to: jazzyjas@bellsouth.net HELP! -Jason
  10. Thanks very much for the compliments everybody! I'm really glad that our publication is so well-received! It feels good to take all my years of graphic design training and experience and finally put it toward a subject that I'm passionate about. It also feels great to do a little writing from time to time. Didn't know I had it in me! I also appreciate the compliments about the Dynamics as well. Fred "Sonny" Baker of the Dynamics is absolute salt of the Earth and he remembers almost everything and everybody. Listening to the names he drops is simply amazing to fans of Northern Soul music. His connections are endless. And as I stated in the article, he randomly "recited" the lyrics to "Lady In Green" by the Magnetics and it sounded like pure poetry. What a sharp guy, so I've got to give him some credit for making me privy to some fantastic and detailed information, which allowed me to write some great content. Plus the pictures of the group are to die for! Dave and Bev and I are obviously out here trying to make a go of it financially, and that's fine, but the satisfaction of the readers and the real fans of this music is what truly gives us a rush! We're soul fans first and foremost. When we get the oppportunity to speak to people like Weldon A. McDougal III, Jimmy Wisner, Mike Terry and others we absolutely can't wait to share that information with all of you. And when all the text, record scans, artist photos and other little bits come my way, I promise to pull out all the stops on the graphics side and present it to you as best as I possibly can. It's the least we can do for all these great people and records we discuss in the magazine. Thanks again everyone! We'll keep doing our best for you! -Jason PS. We are seriously low on Issue #4, so if you're thinking about ordering, you better hurry! Once it's gone, it's gone!
  11. Last year people cleared the floor at Hitsville during these-now brace yourselves... 1. Lonley For You Baby-Sam Dees 2. I'll Pay The Price-Moses Dillard There was no particular rhyme or reason to it. I think it was coincidence that people were leaving the dancefloor at a certain time. Tommy Potts spoke up and said "wow never had that one clear the floor!" Wonder what it might be this weekend! -Jas
  12. Get well soon! ...From your Hitsville Crew in Florida. We'll be thinking about you this coming weekend! -Jas
  13. Our good friend Dave Greet was a guest on Bicknell's show and I'd like to get a recording. Anyone got sound files for that? Would appreciate it! Thanks, Jason
  14. track #6 is kenny lynch-that's what i got on liberty. i just picked up a copy and put it on my latest swap cd. -j oops! just saw someone with the correct title of the kenny lynch. my copy had the label missing!
  15. Actually, I'm just taking a quick break from laying out an entire feature dedicated to the work of Johnny Brantley/Vidalia productions. There's lots of info about Gloria "Towanda" Barnes in the article. It will be published in the 5th issue of There's That Beat! which comes out in September. -Jason
  16. In my limited involvement with the northern soul "scene" I've experienced some pretty positive people. As much as I'd love to take part in the UK events, I feel fortunate to be here in the states because I'm free of the "bollotix" that goes on. For me and the people I associate with, MUSIC has been, is and always will be NUMBER ONE! I've been my own one-person soul scene since 1991 and have slowly but surely picked up others along the way. If the whole thing collapses in on itself, it won't affect me one bit. The music never dies. Like someone else said earlier-the die-hards will retreat into their record rooms and lose themselves in the best records ever made! That's what I do! Not to mention, we're queued and ready for prices to go down. I along with other like-minded folks don't give one single crap about "who's playing it and where." We'll enjoy music whenever and wherever we can, long after fairweather fans have gone away. Instead of the week-in week out stuff, I gear up all year for one single event-The Hitsville Soul Club weekender in Kissimmee, FL. In the case of our weekender-that sense of comraderie is 100% there! It's a smaller event and we're all there for one reason-MUSIC! Since we all think alike, you bet we all get along. The records are impeccable and diverse in style. Just 100% original 45s/LPs all weekend. A full weekend of dancing, records, non-stop soul music, laughs, friendships and topping it all off with a plate of curry by the pool at sunset (soul sounds in the background)-what more could you want? I'll trade that one quality weekend over loads of weekly niters with putting up with people who are in for the wrong reasons. Keeping the faith? Yeah some of us are and always will. Those negative people who aren't will just fade away when there's no more money to be made or attention to be had. -Jas
  17. Thanks for the compliments Pottsy. We have all back issues in stock. Better snap up #1 REALLY fast though. We only have so many left. We still have some number #2s and a decent amount of #3s. I'm especially proud of this issue #4-our anniversary issue and I know Dave is too. I've done interviews with Mike Terry and Dave has interviewed the Harthon guys. We've also got a piece on Motown records, a review of Prestatyn 2007 and review of an allnighter in Pittsburgh. Neil Rushton also did a nice writeup on UK issues of 45s. Our biggest and best issue yet! We're hammering away on issue #5 right now and can't wait to unleash it onto all you soul fans out there! If some of the local UK guys don't have what you're looking for, issues can be ordered from our web site and you can pay with PayPal if you like. Even though they are being shipped from the US, you'll get 'em lickety spilt. Come and check us out: https://www.theresthatbeat.com Thanks a million for the kind words and support that's been surrounding our magazine. It keeps Dave and I encouraged to keep giving you our very best! -Jason
  18. Well...I was about to add to an EBay thread about this, but lo and behold there was a specific one started already about the specific person I was on about! Same scenario...paid for the record and still waiting. The record had better be in good nick, too. This guy won't be getting anymore business from me no matter what happens. I won't tolerate any more of this. -Jas
  19. Yes - the Itzy records are bootlegs I believe. Mickey Lee Lane original is on Swan and I believe he was from Philly. -Jas
  20. Itzy is a label from Pittsburgh that reissued records from the 60s onwards. I think there are some original recordings on the label, but for the most part, it's like Lost Nite and similar labels. -Jason (I'm doing an article about Pittsburgh, so I grabbed it for myself, too.)
  21. IN REGARD TO THE ORIGINAL THREAD: Like it or not, Russ Winstanley has always been a vital part of the northern soul legacy. If you want a progressive type of a DJ, he's not your man, but if you want to go the nostalgia route, he's perfect for it! This all boils down to a matter of taste and having a person be in the proper environment to do what they do. Maybe Paul is just trying to convey the point that xFM radio is not the proper venue for RW-and he's probably right about that. Hearing a guy like that reminisce about the good old days, puts a lot of smiles on people's faces, especially if they were there. Can't slag him off for that at all. Just a generational thing and a matter of taste. OLD VS. YOUNG I think that what's happening is just simply a matter of the veterans of the northern soul scene not wanting what they hold precious to be destroyed and changed by irreverant types. It's a respect thing. By all means, people should respect it, too. There are lots of traditions that are good and that should stay in place. But on the same token, give the younger folks a chance. Any discerning soul fan should be able to tell the difference between who's really into it and who isn't. Age is nothing but a number, like Dave said. It's all about where you're coming from and how you handle yourself. Just because a few of us are from the states and weren't hitchiking to Wigan every week in nineteen seventy-something, it doesn't mean we aren't the real deal. I am, Mike U. is and some others are, too. OUR HUMBLE PRESENTATION OF NORTHERN SOUL: Over the weekend, we had a brilliant batch of sessions from the DJ Villa on Thursday night, all the way through Sunday morning. We had a mix of DJs ranging from younger to older. Not one DJ was a weak link, either. Honestly-not ONE! The Americans held their own. We've got the playlists to prove it, too. Everyone was respectful and got along. We all were ego-free and ready to get down to business with the music just about every waking minute. We recorded a radio show and just presented it as a bunch of guys sitting around, getting wasted and playing good records "still giving a decent amount of info about the records, but above all-ENJOYING OURSELVES! Nobody needed to be impressed, but what was achieved throughout the entire weekend was indeed, impressive. We played what we wanted, did what we wanted and had the best time. No politics, no egos, no dramas, young, old...didn't matter. And the quality never suffered. Whether it be the way we present soul on the radio, our just our attitudes in general, let's all be natural about it, loosen up and have a good time and not take ourselves too seriously. It sure worked for us! -Jas

  23. Hello Soul Sourcers, I know I've been away from the forum for awhile, but I just wanted to chime in and thank everyone, on my behalf. I take tremendous pride in giving the best possible presentation of graphic design that I can. I love this stuff like all of you and I'm putting that all into the layouts that I do. We (especially Dave) put in long hours to make this all happen, so it's really nice as well as encouraging to get positive feedback from the people on here. We are very excited and very eager to get the publication out and about. We're doing what we love to do and with comments like those, we know that it's not in vain. So thanks again everyone! Really grateful for the positive words of encouragement. It truly means a lot. Best, Jazzy Jas
