  1. Hey Soul Sourcers, Here's something I've NEVER EVER seen! It's Tighten Up on the same catalog number as always but with the Ovide B side "Dog Eat Dog". Every single copy that I've ever seen of this record has Tighten Up Pt. 2 on the b side. Has anyone ever seen this? This has got to be rare as hell or even deleted! Would love to know if anyone else has ever run across this 45. -Jason

  6. Hello Soul Sourcers, I've got loads of items on eBay at the moment and have improved the buying experience by having proper sound files you can click and listen to, taken from the actual records I'm selling. I have auctions, buy-it-nows and lots to choose from. Some highlights include: 1. Lee Moses-Reach Out, I'll Be There-Musicor-stunning copy in the original bag. This dancefloor burner was some Johnny Brantley magic and both sides are killer! https://www.majorwaxbuildup.com/ebay_sounds/Lee%20Moses.mp3 2. Nancy Wilcox-Coming On Strong-RCA Victor-killer Northern soul a la Jack Ashford and the Pied Piper team. This copy has barely been played and comes in the original sleeve. Nice issue copy! https://www.majorwaxbuildup.com/ebay_sounds/Nancy%20Wilcox.mp3 3. Frankie "Loveman" Crocker-Ton of Dynamite-Turbo-the inaugural release on this NJ label and a storming instrumental. Condition is a very very nice VG++ to EX- with fantastic sound quality. https://www.majorwaxbuildup.com/ebay_sounds/Frankie%20Crocker.mp3 In addition to those great 45s, I've got loads more, some ending today and some ending next week. Please have a look around and feel free to ask questions. I have 1300 feedbacks and a 100% approval rating. I've sold to quite a few members of Soul Source over the years as well. Have a look: https://shop.ebay.com/majorwaxbuildup/m.html?_trkparms=65%253A1%257C66%253A2%257C39%253A1&_ipg=&_sop=10&_trksid=p3911.c0.m14 Thanks for your consideration! -Jason
  7. At first, try to gather up as much of the residue as you can into a little ball. Just keep working it from all directions and pull it up from the middle. Just keep repeating that process until you can't gather any more. With whatever is left, pull just a smudge of forehead grease with your finger and rub it in. Your skin oils will release whatever is left and it should rub right off. I know it sounds really weird and kind of gross, but trust me-it works! For labels with sort of a gloss finish, like ABC Paramount issues, this is a no-brainer, but be careful with some record labels that have a very dull/matte finish. Sometimes the paper is thin enough to tear so you have to be careful. Sometimes, if the residue is close enough to the center hole, I just keep rubbing the residue in that direction to actually run it off the record entirely. For more delicate situations like those tiny number stickers that go on like a postage stamp or stickers stuck to labels that might tear, your best bet is to lick your finger and keep rubbing the sticker until you break the surface of the sticker itself and make it rough enough to just rub away. Keep wetting the sticker and rubbing it until it reduces to nothing. Eventually, you'll break through to the record label without having picked anything away and you'll get away without tearing it. If you have clear cello tape, I'd say don't even attempt to remove it. If it's crusty and brittle, it just might lift right off. Hope this information helps! -Jason
  8. Hello Soul Sourcers, I've got a massive private press EP up on eBay at the moment. It's the Smallwood Marshmellow Band from Washington, DC. It's got excellent modern soul, funk and ballads. It's a highly sought after record and my copy is super super clean. EX++ to NM- and the cover still has the shrink on it. The only minor flaws are an almost unnoticeable 1 inch seam split at the top and slightly soft corners at the bottom. This is such a great record! Check out the clips below (cut and paste into your browser). 19. and here's my contribution this year
  20. Joints - American slang for "choons" Top boogie tracks for me personally (just originals from my collection): 1. Ice-Frank Washington-Studio II Revue 2. I'm Gonna Miss Ya-Aaron Broomfield-Mountain 3. The Sound of Music-Dayton-Capitol 4. Year 2001 Electric Boogie-Rich Cason-Larc (also as "Bad Times" Capt. Rap) 5. You're a Good Girl-Lilo Thomas-Capitol 6. Tonight-Kleeer-Atlantic 7. Be Thankful for What You've Got-William DeVaughn-Tec (1982 version) 8. Slip Away-School Boyz-Columbia (nice 1984 Bunky Sheppard thing) 9. Get Me Through the Night-Barbara Mitchell-Capitol 10. Word Up-Legacy-Brunswick Now I understand that "boogie" is sort of a UK term, right? I imagined it came from London and might have something to do with the Rare Groove scene, Caister's and that ilk. But it seems to me that it's kind of a vague term and it may have been bastardized over the years. The French and Italians eat this stuff up when I list it on eBay. It's all 80s black synth stuff. The way I classify boogie (as in the 80s sense) is the black pop/soul music that uses more synthesizers and might be geared just a bit more toward funk and not so much Modern Soul. But then things like Zapp, Cameo, etc. are considered mainstream 80s funk in my eyes. Boogie might be more like Dayton, Beau Williams, Rene & Angela, etc. But this is my own interpretation, so maybe some people like Dewhirst and others who got into this stuff can clarify it a little. By the way, I don't really like this term "boogie" to identify this genre. To me, when I think of the word "boogie", I think about early 50s Jump R&B, Big Joe Turner, Bullmoose Jackson and things like that. Like "boogie-woogie" music from the 40s or 50s. And "MrWindUpBird", if you drop the Hip Hop slang and speak regular English, you'll get more respect on here. Just some advice. -J.
  21. My personal choices: 1. California Montage-Young Holt Unlimited-Brunswick 2. You Satisfy My Needs-Big Dee Irwin-Rotate 3. One Woman-Jo Ann Garrett-Duo Nothing particular about the lyrics, just good tunes to cap off a night. -Jas
  22. Scratchin' by the Magic Disco Machine. Massive b-boy break sample, been getting regular spins on the hip hop scene since its birth in the 70s. ....but enough about that. It's "All About the Soul" section of the forum! -J.
  23. Here's a scan of the original. -J.
  24. Every label with a catalog this vast has a few things in there that should have never happened but it's inevitable because when things are going that well, more risks can be taken. Berry Gordy is a businessman, so naturally he wants a bigger piece of the pie and to get it you've got to diversify. But it doesn't always go so well: -The Ding Dongs -Gimmie Dat Ding LP - MOTOWN -FAILURE -La Salles - La La La La La - VIP-FAILURE -Bobby Breen - How Can We Tell Him-FAILURE then the exception to the rule: -Charlene---sorry can't stomach this one either. Big song on the radio when I was in 5th grade. PISSED me off when it came on!-MILLION SELLER, so pure shite to some of us...massive success for Gordy. Bet he's tremendously proud of that record. You won't ever hear him call that crap. -Stevie Wonder-I Just Called...-HATE IT SO MUCH! But...I have to admit I really like "Lovelight In Flight" Have to admit, I'm a little surprised at the Stevie bashing, but everyone's entitled to their own opinion and should have the freedom to speak it. For me, I can hear "Uptight" everyday at least once for the rest of my life, same with "Baby I Need Your Loving" by the Four Tops. But if you feel like you want to give Little Stevie another chance, give this one a try: BE COOL BE CALM AND KEEP YOURSELF TOGETHER-DOWN TO EARTH LP STOMPIN Northern Soul! Absolute killer! Motown's quality cannot be denied and it's all down to a formula: a. those exact musicians b. the songwriters and those particular lyrics c. the talented artists A shrewd businessman with a quality product just can't be beat. Many other outfits have had parts of that equation, but Motown has all of those firmly in place, 100%. Maybe 90% on a bad day. A combination of those things can only happen once in a lifetime. It's so good that we love the pale imitations just as much, hence all the big anthems of NS. I've been to Northern nights (and not just Hitsville) where, in the midst of super four figure rarities, on comes something like "Nowhere to Run". Did it clear the dancefloor? No way in hell. It was seamless. Like another poster said, if they weren't so easy to find, these records would be the most sought after soul 45s ever. "Reach Out I'll Be There" by the Four Tops would be one of the biggest NS anthems of all time. Frank Wilson would be just another one in the queue. When that "best of" CD comes on the TV advert, it's the best of the best for the general public. I think for most of us on here, we moan and groan because we know that most of the World is missing out on things like "Suspicion", "A Thrill a Moment", Without the One You Love (Life is Not Worthwhile)". Those songs are so good, it's almost painful to see them get ignored. But ask yourself folks, do you really want to hear them get hammered to death every place you turn? -J.
  25. Just add onto what Dave recommended, I'd like to strongly recommend "Spinning Blues Into Gold" The story of Chess Records by Nadine Cohodas. Fantastic book that gives a blow-by-blow of the Chess setup starting as early as the Chess Brothers immigrating from Poland to the demise of the label and the aftermath. Lots of mentions of people like Roquel Billy Davis, Phil Wright and others. It also goes without saying that it includes loads of info on the likes of Howlin Wolf, Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters and so many more. Not only do you get a feel for the music, but you get a more human side of things, not to mention what life was like in Chicago many decades ago. Chess treated his artists like family and they were often regular guests in his home. Chess was truly a family business in its heyday and after reading this book, I guarantee your love of the label will grow. Much to my surprise, this book turned out to be an anorak's delight! -J.
