Hmmm...No votes for Loma. That's suprising. Plus Shrine is doing better than I thought it would, considering it might be the label with the most detractors. But I love 'em all. Thanks for the votes everybody. Keep 'em coming! KTF Jas

I'm pretty sure that Four Below Zero and Gentlemen & Her Lady are the two that are back to back on the 12". I think Whirlwind and Poison are back to back on another one. I would dig them out and look, but my 12" box with the Roulette labels is buried and in a dark room where my girlfriend is sleeping, KTF Jas

My absolute favorite song to dance to right now is Ritchie Adams "I Can't Escape From You". The tempo is perfect and the song and production are both pure class. I never tire of hearing it and if it should come on, I'll drop everything to rush to the floor. Right now "the floor" for me is my living room, which has a nice old wooden floor, with a 8'x8' area for dancing, and old records are everywhere! Best venue in the USA. KTF Jas

I don't have any info, but judging by her vocal, I'd say no it isn't Lorraine Chandler. The voice sounds a bit older, whereas Lorraine's voice had a smoother quality to it. It would have been a logical explanation, though-with the connection... Too bad I didn't have enough money last week to see Jack Ashford. He performed in Baltimore last Monday. Was a bit gutted not being able to talk to him face to face and ask him questions like that. I've heard wonderful things about him. Ady? Maybe you know the answer... KTF Jas

The only instrumental that I'll accept as an ender would be California Montage, but I must admit that a song with good lyrics is the way to go. My enders of choice (today, that is) 1. You're Gonna Wreck My Life-Guitar Ray 2. I'd Like to Get Near You-Richard Caiton 3. Lightin' Up-Ty Karim In a crossover mood today. KTF Jas

"Peace Not Punch Ups" by The Kentucky Fried Citizens. Got that one on a deep fried demo on the Oily Free Radicals label. KTF Jas

I agree with Wendy about people getting into northern soul on their own. I can relate because, where I live, it's extremely unpopular. I've practically been my own one-person northen soul scene for years. That makes it sincere for people in my opinion, because the music comes first and they're not checking with anyone to see if it's the "right" and "in" thing to do. The music gets to you and that's it. That's great when people of any age want to go and seek it out, even if it was on a KFC advert. I also agree with Sam about getting a real charge out of northern soul getting a little exposure in the everyday world. It can feel great to hear your great music being played on a level of exposure with great magnitude. At least it was northern and not some other crap, like it easily could have been. And then, I can sympathize with Ian's distaste for great music that we all love being used to peddle fast food to people. Since I'm a graphic designer and have dealt with marketing issues directly, I think to myself KFC and KTF are worlds apart and have no connection. These are just nothing more than the workings of people looking at the population like statistics and trying virtually anything to get people's attention. There's no creativity there. Let's just say someone used "Pyramid" by Soul Brothers, Inc. to sell fine jewelry with images of a man and woman making a commitment to each other or something like that...Then it would actually make sense lyrically, you could respect the sentiment, and understand the musical and visual concepts. But I have major hatred for the mass media as it is. Fast food and TV are hazardous to your health. The only difference is one is filled with harmful chemicals and one is filled with lies. Either way, your brain or your stomach can turn to mush. KTF Jas

I was hoping for the Salvadors, too-as it's my personal all time favorite song and to me a "perfect" specimen of northern soul. KTF Jas

Hey everybody, I had these in the regular sales section and put them up on ebay after giving Soul Source first crack. There are still some items left, so have a look. They're all fixed price-no auctions. Keeping things simple. https://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZmajorwaxbuildup Thanks! Jason

I think you might be referring to Nolan Porter on ABC. I'm not 100% sure we're talking about the same song, though. The alternate 70s Bobby Hutton track is "Wanting You, Needing You" KTF Jas

OH YEAH! "Honest I Do" by James Crawford on Omen is a killer! What a gorgeous label design, too. I've played that many many times in a northern set. "You Gotta Have Love" by Joe Hinton is pretty nice. Another good tune by him is "Let's Start a Romance on a fuscia and black Arvee label. This is a really good Belgium Popcorn number and predates the Back Beat recordings. KTF Jas

Dave, As luck would have it, I'm a massive northern soul fan and I'm moving to Fort Lauderdale. I guess that makes me a very interested party. KTF Jas

My friend Nigel played me a tape he had from the 80s with an alternate version of Bobby Goldsboro's "Too Many People" that I've never heard before. It was definitely Bobby Goldsboro singing, but it was faster. Where do I get my hands on this version? Some info and/or a good quality MP3 will do. KTF Jas

The Talk of the East-Yes, he's been to that one. Told me it was a nice venue actually, but pretty common sounds. But you're right. It's a good place to go with people who aren't hardcore into northern. Everybody can still hang out together he said. You get your fix and they don't feel out of place. KTF Jas

"Are them soul people over there still wanting 150mph all the way... " It's been my experience that they go for generic themes/phrases like "Sock it to Me" "Boogaloo" "Get On Down" or whatever the hell and they can't actually dance to stuff that's too fast. Really gimmicky generic soul is what people want. I call them "workout" records. Don't get me wrong-I like the odd one of those type here and there, like "Downtown Soulville" by Chuck Edwards, "Sock It" Bobby Sax, and "Do It" by Billy Sha-Re, but most of the stuff people go for over here rarely appeals to anyone's sense of emotion. People in the states are, for the most part, playing dress-up and want to feel like they're in a groovy go-go or something. That's why I said you guys are lucky. When I was at LA and they played Marvin "When I Feel the Need" and the whole floor was clapping, there was a bond with the people on the dancefloor and I felt it. It was very earthy. People over here would think that was corny and throw on some "44 Corners Boogaloo Shingaling" record. Pisses me off! KTF Jas

Yes. Nigel has mentioned Billy Whizz. Said he either knew him or his brother. I can't exactly remember. I wasn't sure if it was the same guy on this forum. Glad to hear he is. Nigel always told me Billy could spin about a million times and was on 'This England' True? Billy? KTF Jas

My friend Nigel Betts just moved back to Norwich this past July after being away from there since 1988. He used to be a part of the Back Street Soul Club and ran with guys like Keith Slater and Kev Lorrs (or Laws?). He just moved up the road to Hingham for the quiet life, but if there was a decent soul scene going on in Norwich, I think he would come back out for it. I heard there were a few quality nites there about a year or two ago. If anyone's on here from the Norfolk area, speak up. Maybe we can get Nige to polish his brogues and get back on the scene. I think the idea of the original 3 before 8 is a great tradition and tribute to northern soul, but there are a lot of great enders out there. Perhaps each venue/club would have it's own tradition, based on their crowd. I once heard Jo Wallace say that they had a few standard enders at TOS. Don't remeber which ones, though. At the LA Weekender, "Wash and Wear Love" by Lynn Varnardo was played and it really gave me new found appreciation for that one. I think "That's When I'll Stop Loving You" Belita Woods, "Lightin' Up" Ty Karim on Romark, "Just Say Goodbye" Esther Phillips and Barbara Lynn "Is This the Thanks I Get" by Barbara Lynn would be killer enders. Sure those have been done before. I'd love to have the whole room clapping along to Barbara Lynn. It's such a killer tempo and a nice builder. That would never go over well here in the states. It's mostly mods who think they're too cool for school. Somebody from the states PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong, since I'm so jaded by the lack of a scene (and good taste) over here. (Sorry for the rant.) You guys are luck over there. KTF Jas

Awake 502, see my other poll to vote on the Okeh label. Godz-I picked up an issue of Connie Questell after a lady called me about records from picking up my flyer in a local laundromat. WOW! What a double sider! I was thrilled about that find. The issue on Joey Heatherton is pretty hard to find as well. About the Danny White, I wasn't suggesting that you might have been the one that sold it to me, just wondering if you happened to know any of those Norwich guys. I'm a completist freak weirdo too on some stuff, too. I'm close to having nearly all of the Tamla globe labels. KTF Jas
