ahh deep soul. garethx should get in on this one. he knows a lot. for me, it's something i rarely indulge in, but it sure can move me at times. just today i was listening to "average guy" by the masqueraders and it paralyzed me for the 500th time. it never fails. that song is just so damn good and it epitomizes deep soul to me. "things have more meaning now" by peggy scott is mindblowing too. it's an early 70s old town release. if you've got "old town & barry soul stirrers" (the old cd from the 90s) it's the last track i believe. i think that many people on this board will attest to northern soul songs getting them all choked up, but it seems that the feeling is different. you feel really euphoric like you want to get up and dance and be in your own little world when the song is playing and your happiness could lead to tears if it's just that good or if it takes you back in time on a nostalgia trip. as for northern stuff, when you hear "she just sits there", you're aware of the lyrical content and the serious aspect, but that punchy musical arrangement is the dominant part of the song. maybe something like "the drifter" would be more closely related to the basic spirit of deep soul. the music, the singing and the lyrics are all more like one big expression. in that song (the drifter), they all fit together as one perfectly and do the trick emotionally, but there's that big production still in your face. deep soul seems to have some intimacy and raw emotion that you just don't find in a lot of northern soul songs. it seems like deep soul is an entirely different feeling. on a really good piece of deep soul, you can get really drawn in to the lyrics of the song and the singer's heartfelt delivery. the music and the singing seem to be coming from an extremely emotional place in many cases. there seems to be a bit more storytelling going on too. plus, it sounds less commercial most of the time. deep soul records seem to perform a different function and appeal to a different part of your senses. just good listening kind of stuff most of the time. no question on the soul content either. it's always there. Here's some I like: 1. I Kept On Smiling-Cal Brandon-Hit Man 2. A Nickel and a Nail-O.V. Wright-Back Beat 3. Tumblin' Down-James Fry-Hi 4. When Something Is Wrong With My Baby-Sam & Dave-Stax (sorry so common-but great vocals) 5. I Can't Stand to See You Go-Joe Valentine-Ronn Just kind of rambling on and thinking outloud. KTF Jas

just think about this: if you were doing something more mainstream and acceptable (to boring average uncreative people) like buying/selling/trading stocks and doing well at it, many women would totally get off on bragging to her friends, saying things like "oh he's really playing the stocks well and it seems to be paying off. he's got stocks that are really going up in value, etc. etc." and you would be looked at as important and smart and really business savvy. some women fail to realize that records, especially northern soul records are an extremely solid investment and perhaps the best way to hide money from the government. i mean 'duh' look at ebay completed auctions-the most valuable single items in the records category are northern soul. my ex-girlfriend thought that everything i did was an utter waste of time and discouraged my every move. what a shallow and narrow minded bitch she was. if i had stacks and stacks of stocks and mutual funds she would have been tickled to death and i would have wasted tons of money on internet stocks and all that useless garbage in the late 90s. i would have lost money when stocks crashed and it would have been acceptable, because it was happening to many yuppie douchebags all around me. oh well, i was too busy loading the trunk of my car with records every weekend. nothing bad happened to me. my current girlfriend is much more with it, but used to give me a lot of stick about my record obsession too. however in the past year or so, she's seen me turn 10 cents into 1000 dollars on various occasions. she knows by now that i know what i'm doing and that these discarded pieces of sh*t plastic are the key to financial success and i get to stick with what i enjoy. plus i'm always there at home with ebay sales being my only commitments. it sure beats wasting your money on intangible bullsh*t trying save for your future. there it is-a 45 right there in your hand. the money's right there waiting for you whenever you need it. need to put a down payment on a piece of property or a car?...done deal. i don't need some phony guy in a suit lying to my face about how to invest money. yeah i know that "sister james and ace spectrum stocks" are a little low right now, but just look at how your "solomon burke cry to me and mel torme stocks" matured nicely. ben e king records used to be almost worthless too. if you've got 'em you're in a great position now. hey, if you want to invest your money, buy real estate and rare northern soul records. but you sure can't dance to a house, so keep on buying 45s. let the average guy think you're eccentric while you clean up on the weekend. it takes people years to know what we know. who are the wise investers? we are! KTF Jas ps. the "blowing some money on them" technique works like a charm-especially when it frees you up to browse records while they try on clothing. i can make it thorugh about 1000 or more records in one hour i think. a record store should always be in close proximity to a nail salon, a clothing store or a shoe store. that should be some sort of zoning law if someone wants to open a record shop. there should be some sort of understanding between those business owners.

a lot of british DVDs seem to play on most players. i've even got homemade DVDs from the UK so they might work just fine. heard nothing but bad reviews about S.W.O.N.S. though. KTF Jas

OK, here you go. A picture of the label and an MP3 of the song itself. This recording comes from a tape done by Jean Marie DeMartin back in the late 80s or early 90s. It has the tail end of "You Are My Love at Last" by Neil & Jack fading into the beginning. I faded the ending prematurely because another tune was about to come in. That tape had loads of fantastic numbers on it but this one was probably my favorite. Enjoy. KTF Jas

I think it's absolutely brilliant. Will post a photo and soundfile. sit tight. and NO I don't own a copy. I wish I did though. KTF Jas

I just corrected a lateral skip on a 45 the other day with an exacto knife blade, after hearing Pete's method and it worked. I just had to create a new path so the needle would follow the right way and play the song. Very delicate procedure. I also lucked out in the way that you can't hear where I fixed it. I use a Shure M44-7 cartridge/needle. I'm not a big fan of Stanton at all. I used to use them years ago, when I was more into hip hop. I've found that the M44-7 had better sound and can take the abuse from scratching and that sort of thing. I never find myself mixing that way anymore so I might switch to a Grado cartridge. Goes deep into the groove and has almost audiophile quality for a very affordable price. But whatever you do guys and gals, don't use those Ortofon needles that look like anteaters. I've seen people destroy brand new records with those things after one back-cueing. Most skips are just from junk stuck in the groove anyway, so have a good look at it before you break out the blade. Wet it down good with a rubbing alcohol/water mixture and let the needle plow on through. Playing a styrene record wet quiets the noise down a little too, if you're recording something to archive it. Wow. This is weird. I was just recording both sides of that Ampex 45 to my computer and found this post minutes later. Strange coincidence. As for rarity, I never see it turn up. I'll find out how in-demand it is when I put it up on eBay tomorrow. JM says £150 but I don't know about that. We'll see. He could be right though. Agree with Gareth that JL is a fine vocalist and his LPs for RCA are gems. The northern 45 he did for Columbia is lackluster in my opinion. Wrong material for him. He is too serious and a passionate vocalist to be singing something so trite. I can see myself letting that 45 go really soon. "Search for the Inner Self" is pretty damn good I think. Wonder if anything's left in the can from that session. KTF Jas

After looking at this record a bit more and thinking it over, I've decided that $2200 was a little steep so I'm reducing the price to $2000. Only advertising it here for one more day, then it goes to eBay. KTF Jas

Hello all. I'm absolutely gutted to have to sell this one but here it goes. Cashemeres "Show Stopper" / "Don't Let the Door Hit You In the Back" - HEM 1000 - VG++ condition. "Show Stopper" plays beautifully and "Don't Let the Door" has some minor surface noise in the beginning. I think that a proper VPI cleaning or something similar should correct the problem because it looks great. $2200.00 USD. No exceptions. Must pay immediately via PayPal. PayPal to: jazzyjas@bellsouth.net Have a look at the photos. KTF Jas Please E-mail me to the address listed above. My PM folder is just about full.

Sounds like Mr. Shand has downed a few shandys before recording this one. The singing is very reminiscent of Mike Tyson. Makes you wish YOUR ear was bitten off when you hear it too. KTF Jas ps. Thought it was going to be Remy Shand at first.

I know Blue Beat was a label, but I also thought it was another form of reggae music. i was under the impression that it referred to the early stuff that had a swing to it, like "My Boy Lollipop" and "Honour Your Mother and Father" by desmond Dekker. Pete is that true/ KTF Jas ps. do you have "Ice Water" by Jack Sparrow anywhere? That's a rare one.

<> What I meant by that was PM the other members, not post it publicly KTF Jas

Hello again everybody, I know this is very last-minute, but I've got the address list 95% put together and still need the following addresses: steveh73 Tony Turner vnicepce My CD is almost done. I've fallen behind a bit because of an extremely busy week of buying and selling records but it's a good thing because I've got a couple of unexpected goodies that will be included. If you are any of the three SS'ers mentioned above, please PM me with your address and/or let me know if you still wish to participate in the swap. If I don't hear back soon, I will post the incomplete address list to the other members and we'll sort the other folks out later. KTF Jas

That's "Tell Me Little Girl" by the Spices, one of the holy grails of doo wop. I have the song on a CD, but you probably won't like it. It's a ballad. No danceable quality to it. I'm not big into doo wop anymore, but I'd definitely say "holy sh*t" if I ever found a copy. It's one of the rarest of the rare in the doo wop world. KTF Jas

welcome aboard rich! or is it scotty? KTF Jas

Just pulled this LP and i'm listening to it right now. Killer stuff! Very solid all the way through. Even a few of the ballads move right along. Here's a weird thing that I noticed. My 12" single of "Love's Calling" / "Gettin' Down" credits James Ingram as the vocalist. His name is mentioned no where on the LP jacket though. Anyone know about this? Either way, thanks for bringing this LP back to my attention. I knew it was good when I found it, but I never took the time to give it a good listen. Thanks! KTF Jas
