  1. It goes without saying always evaluate the label paper type before ever attempting to clean using whatever your preferred method. Glossy labels are usually much easier to clean than matt or rough textured in my experience, as there's less tendency for the paper to rub off or lift.....or disintegrate! Obviously a plain colour label will be easier than multicoloured due to potential colour bleed problems. Labels stuck onto styrene can be problematic as often they're bubbled as well as often being quite matt. Finally it's worth bearing in mind some records are known to have very poorly stuck down labels, often turning up with one or both labels missing......I wouldn't advocate cleaning these at all. Labels with ring rub, where the paper surface has been rubbed through, will pose a bigger problems than with just a ring mark, as once the surface finish is broken the paper beneath is very prone to further damage from even the most gentle cleaning and the printed surface comes away easy from around the rubbed area.....best left alone I think.....or perhaps, in the case of a valuable record, as mentioned above, refer to an art restorer or similar qualified person if you feel you have to have the labels clean. For me, I'm generally happy if I can improve them a little and don't feel I have to get the labels spotless.
  2. Could be a massive thread..........depending where an individual draws the line as to what is "soul" and also what constitutes a "classic". Anyhow, how about Tony Galla - In Love, or Larry Allen - Can't We Talk It Over. Deffo Northern, but soul....or garage....or pop.....????
  3. No doubt you will have seen label discogs on the net. It's fair to say you will wade through a large amount of dross on the label to pick up a few gems. There's several of these labels, MSR is another. I have an EP on another song poem label which has a reasonable track, (out of the 4 cuts,) but can't remember what it is & can't find it at the moment.
  4. Had a couple more today. Ricky Davila on Teens Choice + The Precisions on Wild (DJ Copy). Not sure what the going rate is for this Precisions 45 on a white label. Same value as stock copy?
  5. You clearly haven't mastered the art of "nagging". Would you like my wife to send you a PM with some tips..........
  6. One just arrived, our delivery is always after lunch! James Price - Palm Of Your Hand / I Am Sorry. Bought just for I Am Sorry if I'm honest. Posted a request for info regarding the label, artist etc recently and would still like to know more. If anyone has anything please add it to add to that thread.
  7. Mine get played. I play a bunch every single day. They're stored at home in boxes, originally in label order but nowadays roughly in the order in which they were purchased. I generally take a box & play the contents for a week or so, alongside any new purchases. Also, I probably won't be alone in saying, there's still some at my parents house which weren't remove when I moved out....mostly LP's as the wife reckons "we don't have the space" (failing to add that's due in part because of her collection of shoes). When I visit my parents I will usually give something a spin, not always though as there's a chance they will realise that's the main reason for my frequent visits. Used to buy all sorts of genres as 45's, EP's, LP's anything really. These days, mostly 'cos of ever increasing costs, it's nearly always 45's, mainly US, 60's, 70's soul, pop and a fair bit of garage. As a side note, the kids were given my old 3rd hand Bush record player & a pile of old 45's when they were very young & do seem to have an affinity for vinyl......and even listen to some "decent" music on occasions. Don't have many CD's, just a few with unissued tracks, like the Kent CD's etc, & now it's all downloadable I can't really see me buying CD's.
  8. I mentioned the Marvin Henfield version earlier in the thread. Here's a pic of the label & note how his name has been spelled .
  9. One arrived today Ben Vereen - I'll Keep My Light In My Window, stock copy B side of Stop Your Half-Steppin' Ma Ma. It's an upgrade & surprisingly took me a while to find....all seem to be demo copies.
  10. Following up from my earlier post #130 had 6 more records delivered since then, only 1 of which soul, The Autographs Okeh demo, which replaces an old stock copy. Bundle of card & paper sleeves arrived also so got a job on this evening.
  11. Recommended, Jeffery is good to deal with & if you have an issue with a purchase it will be resolved without a problem in my experience. I had 45 which, although new/unplayed, arrived with a tiny scratch on the 1st few grooves causing a couple of pops. He just sent another copy....no fuss. As a side note, it was worth getting in early for the cheaper stuff from his set sales list, ie which he had/has in quantity, as something which was say $5 would maybe be $7 or $8 on the next occasion, then $10 and so on, creeping up in price with every sale. eg. P. J. Smith (Shane) was around $5 when I bought my 1st copy, the next one was a bit dearer & now he knocks it out at $50 on ebay. His website used to be updated quite regularly but he now seems to focus more on ebay I think.
  12. Thanks for the information thus far. I've noticed one of the records listed on Popsike mentions The Consolidated Group, which this Contact label is part of, was Earl Cage's. If this is correct it opens an avenue to explore and there's lot's of info regarding Earl as a Memphis based writer and producer. Edited typo.
  13. Have around 20 45's, + some card & paper sleeves, stuck in the post somewhere, I'm assuming there were delays in delivery due to the recent bad weather as there were no deliveries locally 'cos of the snow. Started to get really twitchy but the postie came today with 3 packages. Rockafellas - Strike It Rich - SCA - always wonder if SCA is a 2nd press as it was released on Southern Sounds with a different flip. Smokey 007 - My Precious World / My Paradise - Birdland - descibed as VG- but arrived very clean apart from some names on the label. Phil Copeland - (My) Lil' Darlin - CIII - and the seller threw a free 45 in Four Tees - One More Chance - Kent promo At the moment I'm elated as Smokey must rate as one of my biggest ever bargains & Four Tees as a freebie can't be bad, that said, there's still a good few outstanding..... Edit - uploaded pics.
  14. Just as a point of interest, there's a 45 by Marvin Henfield on the Proctor and Blue label which has a version on the B side. Quite a laid back rendition and is OK if a bit raw. (Marvin has a great voice imo).
  15. Is this a scarce 45 or very well known? Popsike doesn't show many coming up for sale on ebay, but, as we know, Popsike doesn't tell the full story. It seems to be a very reasonably priced record looking at the values achieved. Both sides of the 45 are posted on youtube, sadly in very low quality, and the fellow who has posted states - "The Contact label was affiliated with Consolidated One-Stop at 1448 Mississippi Blvd in South Memphis. The 864 Kerr Avenue address on the label of this 45 was another door that faced Kerr in the same building, which I always suspected was full of old records. Unfortunately the building burned a few weeks ago in an arson fire." Anyone have any more info on the artist or label?
  16. The Dells - Slipped, Tripped, Stumbled and Fell
  17. The Icemen - It's Time You Knew
  18. The Snowmen - Sugar Daddy
  19. Rita Da Costa - You And Nothing More - Canadian Capitol + US Tower
  20. Here's a scan of Jack Harden. Mine was in a Trans-Canada sleeve so whether there was a connection, distribution arrangement, or just in the wrong sleeve I don't know. It has been mentioned in the tips for 2013 thread.
  21. I always thought so but here's the quote on youtube from Gerry Lincoln, the designer of the label - "Oh God! I had hoped a visual of this single would never ever surface but here it is. I designed that label, basically on a scrap of paper, years before Photoshop. I cringe whenever I think of it, so imagine how I feel actually SEEING it. :)"
  22. Horses for courses. I think it was in one of his auctions but, if so, no idea what it went for. I believe JM has played it out.....at the Stute perhaps?
  23. On Canadian Star Shot. Jack Harden & the Silhouettes - She'll Be Back and also Jackie Shane - Frank Motley & the Motley Crew - Money
  24. Manship posted the US copy on his youtube.
  25. John Woodson - Before - PAM-0 104 released in USA on PAM-O 103 somehow got an outing in Canada with a different flip side.
