Junior Lewis - Palm Or No Palm?
I have been reliably informed that Junior Lewis didn't record "in the palm of your hand". Is this correct as I got the info from trying to read the artiste and title off a spinning disc in a club? Mind you it was 5am and after 6-7 beers................. . I'm sure someone will let me know by 6pm tonight. It's 3pm now, by the way. Warren Boogaloo

Come On Own Up
Sorry, but I have to come to the defence of this. A blistering soul tune it may not be but as a classic 70s shuffler it is fantastic. Used to be a Yate standard and I'd still jump on the dancefloor today if it was played. Warren Boogaloo

Betty Lavette - Live Jazz Cafe 15/05
Wasn't she just fantastic. Can still blast out pure and clear as she did 40 years ago. Not much uptempo stuff but with a voice that good, who cares. Warren

Youth Clubs & Youth Clubs Soul Top 10
Gloucester 77-78. A hotbed of youthclub action for Northern. Went to my first night with my bro Norman at the tender age of 14, back room of some youth club in Longlevens,.Heard the sounds from the locals who bought along their boxes, was amazed at the acrobatic dancing, got my first proper (tongues) snog and the rest, as they say, is history. Can't remember the names of most of them apart from St Peter's, The Irish club, Quedely Village Hall and Wheelwrights. Do I sound old when I say that the youth of today don't know what they're missing with MSM and downloads? I think the answer to that is YES.

How About A Motown Room?
Would a Motown room be successful? The answer would be yes if you got enough people to support it. Would work brilliantly within a nighter as you could easily play 4-5 hours of unknown or semi-known Motown, Ric Tic, Soul, Anna label tunes etc. I just finished doing my monthly Motown nights after four and a half years and although we started it by playing classics, its amazing how many quality tunes you pick up that very few people have heard of and never get played (just have to pick up a copy of Jo Wallace's superb compilations to realise how little we know of the sound that got released). This is especially true of Motown's 70s output. At its peak our Motown night was more successful, numbers wise, than the Northern soul night, so that tell's ya something. I will definitely be putting on one offs in the future (probably 3-4 a year). In the meantime I'm really looking forward to Paddy's Northampton Weekender to have all me vinyl signed. Peace, love and soul Warren Boogaloo

Saw her tonight and still buzzing. What a performance. Brilliant.

Candi Staton
Got to say she's my current favourite artiste at the mo. If you haven't bought the latest compilation 'greatest hits' cd then do yourself a favour and buy it now, brilliant, brilliant, brilliant, brilliant!!!!!! Even my colleague at work who's into Marianne Faithfull and Melanie thought it was one of the best cds he's ever heard. Can't wait to see her at the Jazz Cafe. Who's goin'?
