Interesting selection Wots wrong with your more recent visited venues as stated in the afore said posting nothing to do with Kev Roberts i Hope. Glad to see you managed to slip off some weekends as stated in your post on A Specific Venue & The Record That Reminds You Of It . As far as "pantomine cast" they do appear at most venues that end with the Hokey Cokey or as they like to call it The Okeh Cokey and over seen by the lord of the dance himself as seen on the clip .lmao. But fear not my Soul Brothers & Sisters The Telegraph is on to it before it gets out of hand https://www.telegraph...hate-crime.htmle Opps almost forgot your last question any suggestions?? and right of the subject matter. Here ya go mate they never knew wot they had till we told em. Well Roger Eagles first Dj at The Twisted Wheel, sure told em an extract from his last ever interview. I recently met this black American guy who came over to see me. He's at University in The States and he's doing a thesis on Northern British Appreciation of Black American Music. He'd been to see everybody on the Northern Scene...all the Northern DJ's and so on they all said 'go and see Roger Eagle - he started it all'. Eventually he turned up here with a camera and I blew his head off completely. I started playing him tunes...he went away with a cassette - with what you would probably think are fairly obvious tunes on it. His mind was completely wrecked. This guy's in his 40's, maybe 50's and he's a serious man ....and he's never heard Ray Charles! I said, if you want to talk about Northern Soul there's plenty of people better placed than I am to tell you ...but if you want the history about white Northern English appreciation of Black American music you talk to me! I'll straighten it out for you. I did.I said: this is where it started in the 50's. When it was exciting. I don't want to know about white artists ripping off black artists ...that's bollocks. Everybody covered everyone else! Nat King Cole - one of the most successful black entertainers of all time - he would cover white show tunes, pop tunes, blues tunes - across all boundaries. He didn't care. Ray Charles was one of the first black artists to see the possibilities. I said to this guy 'have you ever heard "I'm Moving On" by Ray Charles? As far as I know it's one of the first cases of a black artist covering a Country & Western song - a Hank Snow tune'. I had to put it on tape...he'd never heard it. I love the train rhythm through the track building up towards the end. As far as I'm concerned a tune this strong ought to be played. I bet you've heard it so many times without really clocking just how strong a track it is. It's a head record. Atlantic were starting to experiment with different instrumentation. Moving away from the basic drum, bass, guitar, sax and piano. They put a distorted pedal steel guitar on it. It's one of my all time favourite records. Question on being a Dj ... I was happy playing the music that I loved. I would play six or seven hours solid single-handedly - with just an hour or so's break for the band - for £3 a night. I was happy playing the music that I loved but with hindsight I would have appreciated a little more money.... Wot a man Roger used to get a lot of records from Guy Stevens (Sue UK Records London) that's where we come in.(ie: Stevens & Eagles.) Atb Irish

Irish Spinner replied to Irish Spinner's topic in All About the SOUL
I can assure you Billy i have never ever used it and to put the record straight mate, Its was never used by any dancer i was associated with in the early Casino days nor did Frank Booper, Squeek or Jethro ever had any call to use it.As far i remember once the Divs started pitching up by the coach load thats when it all started, people just had it in there heads it made you spin better wot a fuking joke that was. That was down to hard work good technique, balance & practice with the right footwear for the job. Mind you ,you have got one thing right 35 years ago 1976 just about the time it started and i stopped going. -

May be some body just got it all wrong. Prevent Slipping Some dancers mistakenly conclude that talcum powder can give them more traction on studio floors. When dancers retreat to the corner of the dance studio and step into a tray filled with a powdery substance, that powder is not talc, but rosin as used in the corner of a boxing ring to prevent leather sole boxing boots from slipping on the canvas . Rosin is dried tree sap and dancers apply a powdered version of it to the soles of their shoes to make their shoes less slippery. Big Money Tunes That Do Nothing For You
Irish Spinner replied to Phil Shields's topic in Look At Your Box
Big money tunes are in the eye of the beholder if rare and its on vinyl to a collector it will always fetch big money . That don't make a big money Northern soul dancer, because some Ass has categorised it to be one, and thinks we are fool enough to except it bollocks to that. Lynn Terry wtf is that all about music to cut your wrist to. I am out for a gud nites dancing to proper big money tunes if they happen to be played by Dj who knows a records real worth. Quote from gud friend if it aint a kicker its a snapper. ¹This interesting subject should make gud reading . Atb Irish -

Just to make a point i didn't mean to promote an alternative to talc, just to raise the issue of various compounds that have been used to aid the dancer. But when it affects others and becomes a hazard surely it must be stopped. Most good venues have a good sprung floor and are well maintained. Although some older venues have other flooring, leather soles will cope with most and if not the dancing style may be restricted but that's a price we should accept and not desecrate the place with talc. -
For those of you that dont have a sound pair of dance shoes and persist in using the Demon Talc . Why not try this buy good pair of dance shoes. . See ya on the dance floor.

Is The 'Upfront' Soul Scene Disappearing Up It'S Own A*se?
Irish Spinner replied to Len's topic in All About the SOUL
Elitism is the belief or attitude of some individuals, who form an elite — a select group of people with intellect. Definitely no one who goes to the venues i attend .lol Irish -
Revenge was sweet: I only remember a few little teams in the early 70s at The Cats and the Casino ripping people off. At the casino there was a little crew from Preston that turned most people over that had dealings with them. At the Cats there where a few lads who where lackies for a real bad fuka from Wolvo who turned my best mate Dave Giedd over Dave was always a bit flash in dress and with money and gear.Well a few weeks after he got ripped off we went back and mid way throught the nite we set them up a treat. Once we spotted them going into the toilets. Both of us went in after them, they clocked Dave from a few weeks before I ask Dave for some gear and as soon as Daves hand went into his pocket they both pinned him to the wall as quick as a flash i stood back as if i was shocked,Dave pleaded with them that he only had a few Bombers they searched him a found the 4 caps .We made sure we had no cash well notes on us before we went in .They dropped two Bombers each and told both of us to fuk off laughing and sn*****ing .Well we where two young 17 year olds from Cambridge a place full of old hippies who just luv a smoke and a gud trip. And little did they know we spiked the bombers with two green micro dots EACH (LSD) then sat back and watched the fun begin. Fuk them thats wot we thought and still do to parasites who prayed on youngsters new to the scene. They where 12 hour trips in those days lmao. Irish

Well my view on the younger crowd attending Soul venues is this..{its like a breath of fresh air to see them}. There enjoying the music that is ageless un like many forms of music over the years that although grt fun and enjoyment at the time just seemes to fade away on the popular scene. The younger crowd look smart and trendy they do give give a venue a face lift that the older crowed could do with. There are some very fine dancers among them they have got rhythm and soul Casie comes to mind she's mordern mod in her look lovely dancer and attends venues from the 100 Club to the Wheel .. Wot else could we ask for to fly the flag long after we have gone. And to sum up one of the bests sets played at Burnley last time was by young Callum a lad with an ere for gud dance music. And some one to lead the way for our younger Soul brothers and sisters. Your's in Soul Irish

Nice little film from a dancers prespective. Great to see the younger crowd's involvment in the making of the film that alone will help our soul scene stay alive. I can only guess how much hard work has been put in by the young dancers as my daughter is a professonal dancer so well done to all of them. Some of them i have come across at various soul venues thats always gud to see. Its hard to capture a passion for the music in such a short clip or say wot the scene is all about, but Tommo's smooth solo sure has a feel of passion about it, that the younger corwd will aspire to. So well done to all involved. Your's in Soul Irish

Now this would have been a Surreal Act. Early 70s was off to an all dayer Soul Sam was Dj. I was with my old wolvo mates Jethro, Squeek & Gonk and a few from Cambridge etc. Some how we ended up in Dudley Zoo i was totaly lost But the lads knew where to go as we walked through the zoo Gonk points to a Poster outside the Elephant house. The elephant was called Toto it was in there having a tooth pulled or somthing the trainers name was Tanya one fit looking lass i can tell you . The poster reads {Come see Tanya & Toto preform there amazing act.} now thats wot i call Surreal the mind boggles . Your a long time dead make the best of wot you have left. Irish
