Irish Spinner replied to Andreas B's topic in All About the SOUL
Yes I did read it as a tongue in cheek line Dave lol .I know a simple NO to the post header of Anyone Have A Spare £400,000? Buy Cleethorpes!... would have done the job but I couldn't resist going off into one. Atb Irish -
Anyone Have A Spare £400,000? Buy Cleethorpes
Irish Spinner replied to Andreas B's topic in All About the SOUL
The owners couldn't give this place away, that's why its up for auction in a last ditch attempt to recuperate the losses incurred in maintaining the pier. As for the Soul community putting there hands in thier pockets to buy the place or any government body investing in it for Soul community that's a fooooooking joke. We are a community bound together by the common bonds of dancing, buying records and listening to soul music, in the company of like minded people and friends.. When it comes to putting your hand in your pocket and investing in the future of the Soul scene,it goes no further than a few working class lads dipping into there hard earned cash to hire a venue mainly at high risk of loss,to give us a good night out which I greatly appreciate. So don't be surprised if this old venue goes down the road of decay followed by being demolished like many before it. Atb Irish -
Even Dave lee Travis had to give up on this L J Johnson track along with most of the TOTPs attendees. Mind you the little bird standing near the front of the stage had the right idea ....Chew your gum in time with the 100mph stuff. I am sure she must have went to the casino on some bloody tour bus.

Brazenose Street - The 1St Twisted Wheel
Irish Spinner replied to Anais nin Carms's topic in All About the SOUL
BRAZENNOSE STREET + Business Listings BRAZENNOSE STREET runs from Deansgate up to Albert Square where the Town Hall is situated. Along this Street it runs into an open square called Lincoln Square with a statue of Lincoln the 16th president of the USA. The statue stands above the first location of the TWISTED WHEEL Club; famous for its love and appreciation of Black American, Blues, R&B and Soul music. When The left wing cafe ran as The Jazz club back in the Beatnik days before becoming, Twisted Wheel, it promoted that " Feline Type Cats could enter at reduced rate. lol Atb Irish Atb Irish -
As the time soon approaches for demolishment of the buildings on Whitworth St & London Rd, Manchester, to make way for a hotel. No4 Whitworth St, home to The Twisted Wheel Club will be the saddest loss of all. Known as the birth place of Soul in the UK. Here is a link to the artists that played the club from both Brazennose & Whitworth St along with a few of the play lists from both venues. https://manchestersoul.co.uk/TWheel/index.html Irish Spinner

As Ian has rightly said photo's are a very important part of the social history of the soul scene. Taking photos at a soul venue is more acceptable today than ever before,as long as respect for the subject is taken into consideration. The earliest photos I know to be taken where taken in The Wheel on Whitworth St from 69/71 by my gud friend Norman Rogers from Cambridge. Now that was at a time if you pulled a camera out, without any one knowing who you where, or why you where in a soul all niter with a camera you would have been out on the street before you got knocked out less your camera. Norman also snapped pics in Saints & Sinners Brum & Bletso, North Hants. Many of Normans picture's have found there way into books and videos clips on YouTube. Thanks to the internet not many ever asked Normans permission once they got into the public domain. Not that he would ever take a penny. Its just nice to be asked. So many thanks to him and others who have had permission to snap away for the pleasure of all and as record of a little piece of Northern Soul history because that and memories is probably all we will have left to pass on of days gone by. SAVING THE TWISTED WHEEL As a representative of the, Save The Twisted Wheel campaign & the club's current promoter Pete Roberts. I can now tell you after discussions with the developers, Richard Goodwin their commercial Director. Richard has kindly agreed to secure the building fabric, fixtures & fittings of the club for the purpose of preservation. Richard will also assist usin its removal if only in part, namely, The Stage room and surrounding structure, if possible so it can be preserved for prosperity. Richard has giving his verbal undertaking to the whole planning committee of Manchester city council in the public arena an confirmed by email to allconcerned parties The purpose of this is so we can approach various local authority body's of Manchester in the aim to have part of the club kept in the form of a Museum to Blues & Soul. This would be a tribute to the artists who played at the club, many rising to world recognition, through a time of great change in their own country and in the UK. Also the Soul music that was first played in the club giving rise to The Northern Soul movement. The Twisted Wheel club in Manchester is known as the birth place of Soul in the UK making this a truly Iconic Club, through out the world. I'm sure you would all agree, that to lose this piece of musical and cultural history, would be a crying shame if some sort of legacy was not preserved to commemorate the place that gave birth to the Northern Soul movement as it is commonly known today almost 50 years later. So what must happen next for this to take place. A plan as to what should happen to the building fabric, fixtures & fittings, No one can or will make any personal gain by claim to any part of the club or its building fabric, fixtures or fittings. All decisions will be made without prejudices and for aims set out as a result of the meeting with Livia Ltd the current owner. All further discussions with any other party must guarantee that all saved building fabric, fixtures & fittings are put to the purpose in which they were meant as stated above. All that is retained for prosperity, from being practically possible to save, should be on the advice of a Structural Engineer. This advice would be as a result of an on site meeting prior to demolition of the buildings of 4/6 Whitworth St Manchester. The removal and transportation would be carried out by the developer,as offered and within the timescale set out to carry out this work. A program of works would have to be put forward to comply with CDM regulations. Whatever is to be removed from the site for prosperity, would be documented and have to be safely transported and contained, until such time a new location has been approved by the trustees of the club. The developers have given their corporate backing to this proposal and will engage with Manchester city council as an ongoing part of their development within the city. On behalf of the save The Twisted Wheel club campaign. Many thanks to Soul Source and all who have given their support in this matter. Gerry Stewart aka Irish

Just for the record Liverpool takes around £250 million a year in tourism based around the reconstructed cavern club. If only 1% of this was achieved in tourism to a Modern music museum in Manchester, where nearly two hundred bands and singers of recognition some of which world recognition have originated from this would surely pay for its self with plenty to reinvest for the future. The Peoples Museum would not be a suitable place as part of a club dose not meet the criteria required for the Peoples Museum. The Development officer for Museums and Library's has been contacted along with the Director of Museums and Library's. We are awaiting a response to our inquiry. Atb Irish

Not a great area in volume would be taken up as the space that the walls, floor and stage encapsulate is fresh air.A holding area has already been sorted out. Atb Irish

On behalf of The Twisted Wheel club, Manchester... Some good news for Twisted Wheel supporters and hard working campaigner's, an application for listing was submitted to English Heritage, today we received the good news that the application has been validated and an initial assessment for designation for listing will take place. This is to assess the applications content in meeting the criteria necessary for English Heritage to put forward the application for listing to the DCMS, The Under Secretary of State for Tourism & Heritage for approval to list The Twisted Wheel. Please note, this process could take up to 6 months from the time of application to the final decision on listing. This one element of our campaign is now in the hands of English Heritage but there are many more fronts we can and will continue with to save The Twisted Wheel .Atb Irish

In reply to the above posted by Vep T5 Well for what it's worth, (not a lot probably)....... I have to agree with you with on that point but thank you for signing the petition and a few emails fired off to MCPC would be welcomed by all who want to Save The Twisted Wheel. See the email addresses previously posted to send your supportive views to. My mate Dek who's idea it was to go in the first place, is a Mod since birth was having orgasms just being there..... .I am so glad he enjoyed it that much. Another mate Bob, who is old enough to have gone originally, but never got round to it was more shocked at the "Gay Club" connection and the sights he saw everytime he went outside for a smoke, and I will quote what he said to me the first time he went out,...... Thank goodness this was outside the club. You don't half see some sights outside soul venues/clubs now days in the wee hours in the towns & city's. Burnley was a real eye opener for me {SHOCK HORROR} but it didn't reflect the grt venue going on inside or the lovely people in attendance. "I've just seen a 20 stone hairy arsed builder walk down the stairs wearing make up, a string vest and leather chaps with his bare arse hanging out" :-D...... Thank goodness he was not going into The Twisted Wheel Club then to give it some on the stage that would have upset a few i can tell ya lmao I am now more or less not able to get out to attend any venues at all, and I certainly couldn't go the the Wheel as I couldn't get up or down the stairs anymore due to my disabilities, but I still feel strongly enough about the scene's birth that I will sign the petition to try and keep it open for those who like that kind of thing........ Thanks again for signing the petition. You have made one very good observation on the point of disable access i will pass this point on to be taken into consideration if the new owners decide to integrate the lower ground level into there plans. This is providing they see a good business case to keep the club going .I cant comment on the gay club part of the buildings in question or what might happen on street level and above. As these plans may be under review as we speak owing to the mounting pressure or resistance they might be felling, if they have any feelings for the people who are campaigning against its total destruction. First went there around 73/74, I travelled up from Cambridge to Huddersfield with a lad call Dean who came from there and who worked with me at Marshalls Airport Wrks we picked up his brother an old Wheeler and the best spinner on a dance floor i ever seen since The legend Frank Booper. I loved the place and the music Barry Tasker was playing.Just my kind of place not to big and grt atmosphere .You really wouldn't want to see it with the lights on lol. The second time i went back there Soul Sam did a set a little different from the norm played at the club. When the nite was almost over we left The Pendulum and travelled over to Leeds Central for the niter Happy days & Fab times. Irish.
