  1. Just being nosey,

When was your first nighter,Mine was 1975,Samanthas,We caught the train from Burton station,Me and Brendon Forster,Beddy,Andy Fletcher.

I think it was £1.20 to get in.

    Kind Regards,Kev,Jarvis

Ps,Iam at Keele on the 2nd of Sept..

Wigan, march 1974,got the train from victoria station in manchester, know what you mean ged was a bit intimidating at first, the first record I remember hearing on the first night, velvet satins"nothing can compare to you" seem to remember, there was a few scrapes when "the bikers" got on at ince......happy days

  2. I used to go quite regularly to rafters, seem to remember them running friday and saturday every week! couldn't imagine that happening now, john grant was famous for the special effects at the blackpool mecca all dayers(smoke and mini explosions)think john was from rochdale area originally and worked for british rail, rufus was another jazz funk club around that time in manchester, colin curtis used to do the entire night on his own, berlin at the back of deansgate was another in the mid eighties, will add more, searching the mental flypaper for the info

  3. What do you class as the role a DJ plays. Is it to bring us poular and / or unknown sounds. Is it to inform us. Is it to entertain us. Is it to educate us .Is it to trick us. How can somone DJ and not use the mike. Does he then just become a human jukebox. shout.gif

The DJ's job is both to inform and entertain in equal measure, done correctly the DJ's enthusiasm for the records he's playing should be picked up by the audience, agree with shane, roger banks is a great example of this, seen many a DJ with mega bucks collections looking totally disinterested while doing a set,use of the microphone intelligently creates atmosphere, golden rule, limit the alcohol intake, stylus on slipmat sounds sh*t

  4. Wanted:

  5. I think this is one of the best of the mini-documentaries. It's from a program shown in the Granada region called "N.W.A.". Well worth a look.

still got this program on an old video tape, filmed mainly at the king georges hall blackburn, had to laugh at some of the quotes describing northern soul as "rare detroit soul" :shhh: the first half of the program was about "enfant terrible",monseiur cantona, think my wife appears a couple of times in the dancing footage

That's a bargain Catfish as iv'e seen Michael proctor listed for £30 recently & now Sams playing it we all know what's going to happen.

Here's the other UBP track i promised you.

    Bobby_Pruitt.mp3

also on the same label,Donna Allen "he is the joy" is worth checking out
  7. I know the purists will wince  at this but do you ever give certain records a rev or two, more or less and think it improves them?

Yes I know they should be played at the speed intended but what records do you "tweak"???

    BH

    :thumbsup::lol:

PS Please ignore if your deck is not adjustable. :D:D

  13. Pete thorpe did it for me ,i was into all the shite played at wigan, pete took me to one side & said thats not soul listen to these and lent me some records,WOW,his knowledge of all things soulfull was and still is amazing, more into his deep stuff now .If you ask any of the big boys from mecca\wigan era they will know Pete as a quiet unassuming guy with encyclopeadic knowledge, remember him putting me onto james lately on temple in 81\2 and giving me a copy .Last i heard he was living in glostershire ,div commander of fire brigade.Would love to hear from him again

Hi salmon, yes pete thorpe always known for his great love/knowlege of the music,as you say more into the deep side of soul, think he took early retirement from the fire service and sold his collection about five years ago,but I did hear he'd started collecting again, remember you lending me your copy of the uptights"shy guy"'cause it was my favourite record at the time circa 79/80 and before you ask I did give it you back...coughs..

    best Mick Howard
