Larry Clinton & Herb Ward...fake Labels
purist replied to Lionelonthevinyl's topic in Look At Your Box
I'm sure the seller thanks you for all the extra publicity for their sales..... -
Wearing my RCA fanatic hat it's never been an easy 45 to find, especially the black issue copy. Having said that the price doesn't really reflect the rarity (yet)

Roscoe Thomas 45 - "american Girl" On World Record
purist replied to Ian Williams's topic in Record Wants
can i ask what sort of price this goes for now? -
Thanks guys for the help, plus SWIFTY making me laugh. I suppose i should have guessed which tune it was gonna be, like already said above, its an old fave of mine too https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xTSFMzE_Qls

My wife insists she's seen a TV advert, possibly for British Airways, which has a Northern tune in it. Anybody else seen it, or has she gone bonkers (again) If so what was the tune ?

I've not had too many, but generally it seems that the vinyl on Aussie releases stands up well. One Aussie I'd LOVE to own is the Larry Santos on Festival, anybody got one they'd part with ?

I'll stick my neck out and say if anybodys worried they've got a boot and want to offload it then I'll buy it and just so you know you're not on your own Mick Holdsworth, while i was typing this Tony Smith popped up and said exactly what I was gonna say, that the Karen/Carla/Moira etc numbers are all over the place

Hang on a minute, wasn't there a similar mistake on another of those Solid Smoke albums where the liner notes claimed a record was unreleased when it wasn't? Either on the Deon Jackson one or The Capitols, more likely the DJ one, but I presumed that this was a guess made by the record compiler (or a simple case of confusion/lack of direct knowledge) not a direct quote from Ollie. Why should we set so much store on what a compilation albums notes say, when it was compiled many years later by somebody who was nothing to do with the original group or label (cant remember now, was the company a California reissue label? was it something to do with Rhino?) sorry memory's sketchy, will go check on the albums if neccesary but they're not easy to get at, so hoping someone else has them to hand to check?

I'm with Tony, a different vocalist (granted the sound files dont help us to be 100%) strange that its the exact same coupling of tracks, maybe some kinda pre-press to show how the songs should be sung? trouble is with those al benson/bob lee things the numbers seem to have little or no meaning, or maybe i'm just too thick to work it out. Has anybody ever worked out the Hawk / Mica / Crash / Limelight / etc numbering systems?

May I just add that the fantastic booklet with the cd is worth that much alone

There's many a time people on this scene baffle me, but not half as much as the "lets smash up all the existing ivory" folk ........? I'm with the sane man who seemed to be making a logical arguement that by reducing the quantity of ivory will only make the illegal ivory all the more rare & desirable, and of course higher priced, hence more reason for poachers, same as going round smashing copies of the rarest of the rare 45's. But wait, as long as the royals have given it there seal of approval, that'll make the chinese not want to have ivory any more and all the elephants will live out the remaining ten years until they all die off ???? Now if we can get those 'no longer needed' ivory crushering machines around the UK smashing up all the TMG's they can find, my knackered old ones will fetch a fortune and I won't have to go to china to flog them, or better still sell the crushing machines and use the money to pay for more armed guards to keep the elephants safe

Northern Soul On The One Show Next Wednesday The 26Th
purist replied to Southern_soul1's topic in All About the SOUL
Nominations for most likely tune they'll dance over the end credits to are a bit thin on the ground, so far I've only seen "Happy" as a contender.... fire away -
'kin shasa !!! mind it's only two bidders who have pushed it into the stratosphere

Joan Moody - We Must Be Doing Somethin' Right
purist replied to Fuzzyjonclay's topic in Look At Your Box
Original copies have one of those extra large capital X in the run out groove, they're raised so you can feel it. I presume all the copies without are just boots? if so it's actually quite a rare original isn't it? -
Every time I see the younger folk at a Niter it gladdens my heart (especially when they're dancing or got their head in a sales box) and so it should with anybody who truly cares about this scene of ours. The scene hasn't been underground since Gethro & Co pitched up on Top Of The Pops in 1975, so having some youngsters dancing on the Brits isn't exactly giving away any secrets is it. To those dancers I say well done, ignore the moaners and the jealous, just get on with enjoying the music in any way you want to

Seems very unfair, and no explanation as to why ? Maybe its just how they do tickets for every film, and I can understand giving 50% to manchester, but why do certain other counties have more than say Staffs (with Stoke and the Torch) or West Midlands (with Wolverhampton and The Catacombs) Worcestershire (with Chateau Impney) venues without whom there may never have been a Casino in the first place.....just saying

not commented on this all the way through, but wanted to make one final, maybe vital point. A fella I respect and admire, who has done more than his share for this scene of ours said to me " When I'm DJ'ing I will never knowingly play a song that has been booted. That way People who care about such things will know I'm 100% genuine". He went on to tell me that as soon as a song got booted he'd quietly sell off his original most of the time, and if he didnt sell it he'd leave it at home and never take it DJing with him in the future. If there's more than just this one chap doing this same thing then yes, the value of records booted will go down as less people want to buy an original of a song thats been booted in the future. (p.s. I see absolutely nothing wrong with snatching a boot off the decks and chucking it onto the dance floor, hopefully smashing it . Maybe that's just me and Butch then) (or is that another urban myth?) -
perhaps somebody is trying to collect the full set of Soul Wax 45's, and the higher prices are for the rarer ones they haven't got yet

Top tune has to be Tony Mason "Take Good Care" Closely followed by Willie Kendrick "What's That On Your Finger" Not sure this qualifies as it's almost midtempo, but it's very "Big City", and my girlie choice, Lesley Miller " I Talk To Your Picture" other 'less quickies, but not really beat ballads' of note from the later 60's or 70's inc the magnificent Prime Ministers "Make Up", Main Ingredient "Black Seeds", Jon Lucien "Would You Believe In Me" Insights "You're Just A Someday Girl" Charles Drain "I'm Gonna Stay" & Mighty Pope " If You Want A Love Affair" - all of which have received plays at suitable venues down the years

can i suggest that if somebody knows a song is on there that another thinks isn't, then it'd be nice to post the link?
-
Ella Washington "Bye Bye Baby" Octavia, a Stafford favourite of mine is missing (even the 2nd issue on Atlantic isn't on there) There's lots missing, but I'm always happy to find things on there, so thanks to those that post tracks up !

why would 6 different people bid over 500 dollars? shouldn't it sell at 350 quid max? have i missed something? is it actually made of gold and painted black to look like vinyl?

In a lifetime of collecting Ive seen more Teri De copies than Fontana Issues (wdj fontana being the common format) Back when I was trying to own all the Teri De's somebody traded a vg Teri De and small amount of cash, for a near mint Fontana issue and those in the know all agreed he'd made a good trade. As the 25+ years have gone by very few of either have since surfaced, and more folk accept the desirablilty factor of Teri De as a label, probably making it less likely for them to come out of collections, so even if there are more TD copies, then it may be easier to buy a Fontana because there isn't the same rare soul charisma attached. I'm guessing 500 quid for a nice copy to the right buyer (either a completist or a "must have one in my dj box" type) but I'm not the right person to value records as I'm a black hole collector (ie records arrive in my collection and are never seen again in the sales arena - apart from the odd exception, but its the exception that makes the rule, so they say) What price a TD copy? several thousands??

Can't be 100% sure, but I have a memory of one mate of mine ( possibly Guy H) having a Del Larks that was cracked completely in two pieces. To fix it, it had been glued onto another scrap record (with the middle knocked out I think, so there was just the grooves left) From memory it played acceptably for dj'ing, I dont remember even a slight noise, because I was gonna buy it off him. Only mentioned this because it might be the same actual record ( maybe your mate bought it off Guy, or vice versa?) Be good to know where it is now? I bet it still plays okay though, a good repair is better than not having the record to play, or worse still a 70's boot. I have a Nite Life copy of Jades that's actually in 3 pieces & looks awful. It's held together by a combination of tape, glue and melting, but on the odd occasion I've played it in an oldies set it rams the floor and nobodys the wiser. If you pay 10% of full value, or even rising up to 50% in the case of mega rarities, then thats fine in my book. Anybody got a cracked but playable copy of martha star I'm Lonely? home waiting at a fair price :-D
