Christine Cooper - Voices of Vista Lp - 1966
purist replied to The Tempest's topic in Look At Your Box
I wonder how many beside 'Willie' have Teri on lead? SOS is definitely CC, so maybe there's other tracks that feature other girls on lead ? My hearing isn't that great to distinguish between them all, though Teri is different vocally to CC -

One of the two middle ones on the back row ? Don't know if I've still got the album, seem to think they named all five members, anybody got it handy to check ? -

Christine Cooper is a puzzle to me. I bought the Teri Nelson album donkeys years ago, and the version of S-O-S on that album is the same as the CC 45. I used to wonder if the vocalist on the Teri Nelson tracks was the same person as CC, but I read that Teri Nelson Group wasn't ever a group as such, just Teri and various backing vocalists she'd used. The photo on the album cover has three girls who all could be the same person as on the really poor quality video from those old Shivaree shows on youtube, she appears to have a gap between her front teeth but sadly the album photo has them posed with their mouths shut. Is the general concensus that Parkway was not exactly run correctly/legally/ineptly ? Has anyone got a clear photo of CC, or have any confirmed info on her? -
I always thought I'd heard a different version to that green label Pretention one, so glad somebody else remembers it. You've made my day !

Articles: Pete Lawson 1984 Letter To Blackbeat
purist replied to Steve G's topic in Front Page News & Articles
Then, as now, I believe the arguments helped attendances at venues that were labelled 60's Newies etc. It made people nail their colours to the mast. My favourite thing from this whole backward and forward debate, was being fortunate to go round Dave Hitch's house as he decided to sell off all his rare 60's northern to finance buying new and independent release 80's. I think between myself and one of the main Stafford DJ's we had most of his very impressive collection, a lot of which found it's way onto the turntables of the venues playing rare 60's, so for all his disagreements in the columns of Black Beat in his way he helped promote the 60's scene ! -
That ZZ 45 shares the same backing track as ???? rarer Okeh item possibly ? solo male artist, damn my memory, grr

Ebay - Have the Filters changed on the worldwide web
purist replied to Carlisle's topic in Look At Your Box
I wonder if it's a chrome thing ? I'm having the same problem. Even if i go into advanced search and select north america only it still shows records in belgium, UK, etc. When I choose the item location and click "see all" the box opposite is empty, so I cant choose north america or whatever because there are no choices if i go onto ebay uk the only choices are worldwide, euro , within distance etc could it be anthing to with the bit that says " post to and it has my postcode? -
Back when JMM started it's domination of the rare soul scene, I remember some of the boys playing the Black Nasty version at venues like Albrighton etc and I was completely dismissive of it, because I was doing a straight comparison. I will always adore JMM, but these days I understand the Black Nasty and how it's different approach has something to offer. Older & Wiser maybe, but still voted JMM

This morning on BBC on their Heir Hunters programme one of the subjects they were trying to find heirs for was John Powney. I wasn't watching the programme but as soon as they said the name it immediately had my attention. If you don't watch this show it's about the companies that make their living tracking down heirs when the person who has died hasn't left a will or any obvious family. They work through records of births/deaths/marriages and local census etc and once they find potential heirs they sign them up with a "sign up with us and we'll take our percentage and get you the money" Often times the inheritors are not aware of these distant relatives so couldn't find the way to make a claim without these companies (I became interested in it when it was first aired because years ago my Dad had one of these out of the blue inheritances . I remember them telling him he'd get a third of a fourth of a fifth of the estate total, as he was one of 3 kids, from 4 parent siblings, from 5 grandparent siblings, which amounted to about a hundred pounds) It was indeed our John Powney they were researching, and the subject of his expensive record collection is discussed. I won't ruin it for you but a few very well known soul scene people are featured. It's on iplayer if you want to watch it. https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0b1518b/heir-hunters-series-12-7-powneylewis

Sweet & Innocent: cry love * original vs reissue *

Didn't know this had been reissued? Is there any demand? Is it worth anything? -
a mate of mine paid £500 for it a while back because he was sick of waiting for it

Isn't it the same as it always was? that people will want to cherry pick your collection for the best bits and leave you with the 95% that has become very hard and time consuming to sell, that is unless you have a collection that's all big time classic oldies & top rarities which owe you absolutely nowt because you bought them off the bowl list for £2-£8 years ago. In the past every time (except the mid to later 80's) people have said words to the effect of " Sell Sell !!! You'll never see prices this high ever again", a few years later those prices are overtaken by leaps and bounds. My guess, and that's all any one has to offer are guesses, is that prices will continue to rise and rise for 5 -10 years at least, and maybe longer. Even when a few in demand records turn up in the states many are G condition, so if you have a half decent collection in decent condition it will grow by a third in the next 4/5 years, based on whats happened recently, so if you reckon your best bits might fetch £30,000 today you have to ask yourself " Do I want £30,000 today, or would I rather have £40,000 in a few years down the line" Your call hth

Great idea and best of luck with it. As has been said above the stylus - and importantly the weight/pressure bringing it into contact with the records is the key for collectors. Also if you are using one for crate diving then the system that delivers the sound through headphones needs to acurately represent the true sound of the disc, not with added bass or any modern fangled unwanted sound suppresion, which I'm assuming you'd have on the loudspeakers side of things to give it a nice rich sound? Side story - when my local Co-op store took on a batch of the Discassettes, presumably because they were not exactly selling profusely by then (probably 3 years after they first came out, so maybe they were end of line?) they retailed them at half the recommended price. I'd had the old kind before and sold it on, so bought a new one. I took it everywhere, and the young folk who were around then didn't know what they were and a few asked where they could get one. My entrepreneurial streak came to the fore and I invested in a spare which I took to a northern doo. I promptly sold it for the retail price, doubling my money, I did it again and again, taking 4 to a niter one night and I could have sold 20. By then my sales patter had grown as had the price. I told everybody that they'd stopped making them and these were the last few. I took orders for more, only to find that I'd emptied the Co-op of their stock. They echoed the line I'd been trotting out, that they couldn't get anymore and had bought the last batch made, so my money making venture died. I did manage to trade my last one for about treble it's retail price, but I was happy, I was paid in records So if you bought one of these at a venue sometime in the mid 70's, it was most likely that you bought it off me. One final thought - I've a feeling I was walking past my local Co-op a couple of years later, and saw they'd got more in stock, I meant to go buy one, but forgot. Maybe they'd got hold of some more because previously they'd been good sellers (to me and probably nobody else ) I guess I'd moved on to other money making enterprises to feed my voracious record buying addiction by then. Happy Days !

Don't think I've ever seen this red issue, does anybody have a scan of what it looks like?
-
just watched the final two episodes of season one, and in ep 9 "Story of a Scar" I heard a tune I'd never have expected to pop up - Stone Crush On You - O.T. Sykes (Fun City) ! Like most folk I dislike it when northern tunes are added to TV, Adverts, etc, just to try to be trendy, or sell to a certain age group, but when they pop up unexpectedly with no knowledge of our scene then it always makes me smile. O.T. Sykes gem is from that era when I could still dance , it always drew me to the floor, along with many other who claimed 60's only allegiance ;-)

That Paul Smith could happily have come live with me, but the reason for me commenting is to say what a lovely looking thing that Probe label copy of Choice Of Colour is. I think I'd read that it got released somewhere like the Phillipines on Probe, but never seen one in the flesh (or is this from somewhere else?)

Hi Dave, I used to play this track from her Equal Opportunity CD (15 years ago might be right as said above, but I'd have thought a bit further back maybe? came to prominence after The Good Gotta Suffer 45 became a regular spin and I'd have guessed 20 years ago for that? ) From memory it had a pink cover. There was another track from the same CD album that went down well with the dance floor back in those days - might be "Don't Get Off On Me" or something like that. Always meant to get around to having them put on a carver. HTH in your search. This release on Tapna you refer to, is this a vinyl release? I've never seen one, but would be interested, any idea when it got made? jp

Pathe Marconi on the sleeve makes you think it's French? -
Just to be clear, are you saying that the version that is on the Dianne & New Worlds album is identical to the 45 version by Val Palmer? or do you mean it's the identical backing track with different singers? or the same singer but perhaps a different take recorded at the same session?
