  1. Haha, interesting post Since there is a propensity to post vids on this thread, I offer this: (It's not soul, I know, yet it seems somehow apt.) ">

Steady on mate, that reads a bit like an Oscar speech
  3. Problem? Hell no, why should I have a problem? I find this thread quite entertaining. It puts me in mind of a TV programme: An Audience With Dame Edna.
  4. Are you Parkinson in disguise?
  5. Surely this thread is worthy of its own section? I'll bet there would be no shortage of suggestions for a title for it.

Can I make a suggestion for the parts of A Team? Kev H and his mates from Mansfield.. it's what they were born to do!

I tend to agree with a deal of what you say re treatment of this film on here, but I must state a couple of reservations: Firstly Pikey's Dog hasn't, as far as I've seen, been judgemental of the film in a negative way. Others in your list, yes.. but you must realise that some of them are untouchable, and your criticism of them by name can only result in censorship and likely closure of this thread. And what's with the fascism remarks? It's not a Marxist/Leninist commune, you know.. well, apart from freebasing sometimes. Secondly, what is your point about your youtube hits? Are they linked to the film? Oh, also why is it necessary to camp it up so much in your subsequent posts? You are only living up to your oft-portrayed SS charicature.. plus it might lead to Simon White showing up.

Sorry Jock. I'll try not to let it happen again. Yes, thank you. Actually the royalties bit was meant as irony. Or do I mean satire? Are you American, by any chance?

Is the purpose of the film to create a "tribute to the period and the scene"? Or is it to tell a story, something which may appeal to the paying public, that just happens to be set against a backdrop of NS in 1974? I thought it was the latter, in which case the only people who are going to get exercised about accuracy are a few anoraks on here. I think this "paying homage to the music" idea is very noble. Looking at the photos of your records, you must have paid a lot of "homage", in the form of royalties, on those, no?
  10. you too
  11. Cheers Mak. Never heard of Shobnall before and I had thought Bentinck was am oldies gaff. BTW, was your lad the one who used to dance in a bush hat? If that was him he was very nimble. Is that wise? If it's the forum I think it is, theres a lot of blood-letting and self flagellation going on over this topic.
  12. Tokyo? Get off.. that's the car park at Bulwell Co-op! I know about the Attic. Could you list the others please?
  13. It's not that "Because of You" is a bad record, more that it became popular as the token "new" record at soul nights and everybody got one because the arthritic and the p*ssheads could dance to it all the way through, so it's been played to death! Same with Ace Spectrum!

Tend to agree Pete.. I wish that sort of 70s was a bit more fashionable these days. One or two more from 75/76: World Column, So Is The Sun Babe Ruth, Elusive Black Nasty, Cut Your Motor Off Esther Phillips, What A Difference A Day Makes Al Foster, Night of The Wolf (awesome!) and then there was: Barnaby Bye- Can't Live this Way, Biddhu- Exodus Ginger played Gentleman and Their Lady at Cleggy last year... packed the floor! Eh? A couple of years ago you couldn't go in a venue (or a lift, for that matter) on the east side of the country without hearing Millie Jackson! BTW.. has anyone mentioned Wayne Gibson yet?
  15. Good post mate... well done for speaking your mind. Just looked at the post in events and no surprises with the guest DJ's. I reckon a few on here could predict some future guests from the oppurtunist "you-do-mine, I'll-do-yours" brigade.

We got stopped by the rain Steve. BTW, you forgot to include a kestrel in your plot summary above.

The voice of reason! This film is not being made as a documentary. The only people who will care, or know for that matter, whether the soundtrack is authentic or not are a few anally retentive grumpies on here! The remainder of the audience of maybe thousands won't give a toss as long as it's entertaining, and a few recognisable names on the credits can only help to get bums on seats,. Anyone that don't approve can always demonstrate outside the first showing.
  18. Dave replied to a post in a topic in All About the SOUL
    Quite right!
  19. This is right, I've certainly seen him at Skeg and one or two other venues.. possibly Horncastle, as I'm sure it was Nick Rennie who pointed him out to me. He was not in the best of shape, I seem to remember something about a car accident.

    Do stop shouting.

A brave subject, this! I can see both points of view. I think there's less suspicion about an established promoter/club dedicating the odd event to charity compared to a relatively new face starting a night for charity, which causes some to question their priorities. The whole issue wasn't helped last year when a certain promoter decided to dedicate a regular ailing event to charity but was then unwilling to furnish proof of donations when asked.
  22. Dave replied to Mark Bicknell's post in a topic in All About the SOUL
The part you highlighted Mark was a secondary comment regarding the malaise affecting the scene of late, alluded to on this thread and many others: too many events, often moderate musically and poorly attended, because there are people who put on events because they want to get behind the decks and care little else for the music or the scene. As for my "aim", it was broad, on an "if the cap fits.." basis. I didn't say that anyone is less into the music because they don't attend, I merely stated my preferences, particularly where new tunes and different styles are concerned. Sorry you find that to be rubbish. Good post Matt, you've summed up what it means to many.
  23. Dave replied to Mark Bicknell's post in a topic in All About the SOUL
That's all very well, each to their own and all that, but I like to hear other people's music as well. Much as I love to listen at home sometimes, in the car etc, it's the buzz of hearing it played loud in the company of friends, and hearing new records that really does it for me. BTW, like Mr D'Arcy often says, I can think of a few that only go out when they are DJ'ing: Do they really love the music and the scene? Or just love being in the spotlight?
  24. To quote Steve Cato from his thread in ABS, this is where the MVP's fits: "There are some that you have heard/liked and danced to in the past but you aint too fussed if you never hear them again... They are now as welcome as second attack of vd or thrush... They just got so much hammer and now you realise they aint as good as you thought, you have heard many since to replace them..."
