  1. Welcome back! Glad to see your exile was short lived.
  2. Even more philosophical than usual this morning? I like your analogy. To expand on it, if I may, the two products you mention correspond to "Across the Board" events. The latest products, those high in essential fatty acids and low in cholesterol, equate to the "up-front" scene. Many acknowledge the benefits of these, but few actually consume them. The bread-moistening material that equates to the "northern oldies" events, the corniest and most cheesey of which is the shopping centre debacle... is lard!!! I have to say I no longer use the term northern soul to describe my musical taste to outsiders as the scene has become stereotyped... same music every week, fancy dress etc etc. It's a shame.
  3. That's it! Of course it is. How are you btw Paul?
  4. Doubtful. She has questionable taste, but even so I don't think she would have been at that event.
  5. Amusing story? Did you really think so? Oh well..
  6. You don't offend me Pete, personally I reckon your son may have done the right thing though. Either way, would he have bragged about on the internet if he'd taken the other option? Agree about the bullying, whether it be in "real life" or by threatening emails.
  7. Sacred? No. I was however brought up to respect women and taught it is wrong to lay a hand on a woman, and I have brought my sons up to believe that as well. It's about common decency. Putting the boot on the other foot, do you have a problem with women? You think it's ok elbowing them, you've slagged Joan for reasons which are not clear and called Dawn a fascist! Do you have "mother issues"? Did your mother make you a homosexual? If I sent her the wool, would she make me one?
  8. Not as often as Levine is sh*gging you.
  9. Good point.. there are indeed cowards on the internet. Give me a brave 18 stone man who assaults women with his elbow any old day of the week!
  10. Eh? Either you've missed the tenor of that post or you really are self-obsessed! Moggy was trying to bring a little levity to the thread. Those that read SS regularly know that this is his way, and good on him! It's ironic that you think some should "be ashamed to the core" for their dissenting posts, yet you find no shame in telling how you assualted a woman who interfered with your filming!!!!
  11. I'm saying that if a record has been played and gained some acceptance at a northern soul event like those that occur every weekend, attended by paying punters, (and name dropping has nothing to do with it), then nobody can really argue that record is not n.s. The year the record was made has nothing to do with it IMO, hence the acceptance of Sharon Jones and Nicole Willis. The three you mention obviously "qualify" as they were established plays, and incidentally I happen to have all three on vinyl. Your duck analogy is unsound, no matter how many times you repeat it. It is too subjective. The passing bird may well look like a duck to you whereas others may judge it to be a goose.
  12. Surely this is how a record is defined as "northern soul"? Whether or not it has been played, and to some degree accepted, at a northern soul venue. The ones listed above have been played and so there can be no argument that they are northern soul. Some of the tracks posted on this thread however may well not have been played out, and until they are they can not be labelled as northern soul IMHO, regardless of what it says in the sleeve notes or what anyone writes on a message board!
  13. Great thread folks, fabulous some might even say So many of my favourite records mentioned here, mainly because they were new to me 10 years ago. A few though pre-date 1986 I reckon. Some have been commented upon, and although my memory ain't the best, I reckon The Jokers was played earlier (Nev Wherry perhaps?) and also I heard the Hamilton Movement first time around, though not necessarily at a northern event?
  14. Was just commenting Sean, didn't intend to interrupt. In fact I doubt if you could, though somebody will have to when it's tea-time... boil-in-the bag cod tonight, I believe.
  15. Erm, no I'm not sure it is quite the same. Whenever I've attended a sportsman's dinner the invited speaker has tended to tell entertaining anecdotes for about 45 minutes, and then sit down before the stories become dull. This thread has become more like a few pensioners spending every afternoon at the day centre talking wistfully about their youth whilst playing dominoes. One old boy remembers more than the others, although he sometimes struggles to remember what he had for breakfast that day, but in time the subject matter has become of limited interest to those who are not sitting round that table.
  16. It's called basa or pangasian, a species of catfish. It is farmed in the Mekong delta, probably the dirtiest river in the world.
  17. Not in the same league as IL. More swirling chiffon needed
  18. Sci-fi and time travel are getting into every thread at the moment!
  19. Now that is good! An Oscar Wilde standard put down!
  20. Haha! Good post! It was 74 when I got into the swing of things and can't imagine things had changed a lot in a year i.e. plenty or turkeys showing up amongst the good records. As others have said, Margaret Little would have found favour whenever it was played.. and is far better IMHO than most of the clips posted on this thread!
  21. It's not rubbish. Though I take it not your taste, old bean.? So be it. Don't tell me though that you don't see the relevence! Your posts give the impression of intelligence and a good education, no?
  22. Yes but northern soul is music that is played and accepted at northern soul events by northern soul fans. Merely labelling a record as northern soul does not make so.
