  1. Oh do give over with the limping dog act! Having a different opinion to you is neither bigoted nor persecutorial. Referring to people, as you have on this site, as "nazis" and "hitler youth" is bigoted. Elbowing a female, as you have claimed to have done, because she was a "nuisance" is persecutorial.
  2. I think Butch was also billed to appear at Keele a while back and then didn't. Don't remember that meriting it's own thread, and yet Stoke does. Strange, eh?
  3. Levine-haters? How meladramatic is that? Just because some of us don't care for your "music" and aren't impressed by your self aggrandisement, it does not mean there is hatred involved! And please spare us the persecuted minority clap-trap with the homophobic jive! Some might say that the bigotry on this thread is mainly yours, with your intolerance of any contrary opinions?
  4. I agree. A very well reasoned and reasonable post IMHO. Why is it that when someone expresses an opinion different to your own, you start with the childish abuse?
  5. no wonder then that my text remains unanswered
  6. Respect. Does he know his team lost 4-0 this afternoon?
  7. Matt would like a spot please
  8. Who is this Steve of whom you speak?
  9. Are they? OK. I don't know because I like 60s music. Like the sexy sheep thing though.
  10. What? Don't understand that. I think you are, like so many others on here, a very bitter man.
  11. Oh, you disappoint me! Yes sweetpea, I know what the title is. That's not really the point I was making. The thing is old fruit, you are using this thread, and indeed this site, as a vehicle of self promotion. Not an umcommon pradtice, I know, but you really take the piss! (metaphorically speaking, of course) Precious.
  12. Surely "Mom" is interchangeable with "Sis" "round there"? Oops... nearly forgot the
  13. Mommy? Are you pretending you're American?
  14. No. I think Soul Source pre-dates the soul scene Andy!
  15. Not sure about "everywhere", but what he says has a ring of truth for me. Surely this thread should be in "sales"? Fair comment. On facebook? That may have been me. I think you ought to get used to it.
  16. Paul, how about "Venue Serving Best Pizza"? Quite the "in-thing" at one time in Peterborough.
  17. Sorry to read this Dawn! I know how much your event meant to you and Trev, and that you won't have made this decision lightly. Another case of genuine people being undermined by johnny-come-lately wannabbes! Very best wishes to you both.
  18. Hangover this morning Beeks? The phrase you quoted was not mine. I quoted it from Matt's post, hence the inverted commas, so that I could put over a converse view. If you read the posts you will see that I have no problems with a bit of R&B and Jamaican being played.
  19. Of course you're allowed your opinion, as are we all, though saying "These pick n mix nights are just to get people in who don't like soul .. to fill the room up" comes across more like a statement of established fact rather than opinion, and I know it to be wrong in some cases. The promoters taste has a great deal to do with it, as music policy is often a reflection of their taste. If it was just about "getting people in" there would, god forbid, be even more oldies nights dealing in the safe and familiar. If the music policy of these promoters does not coincide with the taste of sufficient customers obviously the night soon falls by the wayside, but there are mixed events that stand their ground, as Spacehopper pointed out. Another point is that it's not exactly a new concept to have more than one genre: Look at a few old playlists from The Wheel. You included on your list Betty Lou and Bobby Adams and it's stretching things a bit to say that's soul rather than R&B, IMHO.
  20. Oh that's what they're for, is it? It's all black and white to you isn't it? It doesn't occur to you that some mixed nights are put on because they reflect the promoter's musical taste? Or that there might be a following for this sort of night, some of which are long-established? Just because a record gains acceptance in northern rooms, it doesn't mean that record miraculously ceases to be R&B!
  21. Half hour sets are a good way to start the night: Nobody has to endure too big a portion of the sparse dance floor period when folks are getting going and they all get a chance to play at a more attractive time later. I think the guest, assuming he's there because he has a following, should then be given a 90 minute "prime-time" spot at least. If this means only three DJ's at a soul night, so be it! The promoter will just have to drop one of his mates (who probably has the same records anyway)! In reality this will seldom happen, as it might cost the promoter a return DJ spot at said mates event. It baffles me sometimes when you see an event listed here with a "name" DJ and the promoter manages to give himself more deck time than the guest. I've even seen these guys list a prestigous guest then refer to themselves as "main DJ". At nighters 90 minutes plus slots can work, but that timespan of solely crossover/mid-tempo fare can be a killer!
  22. Sorry, I didn't see you'd done the age/baggies thing. So you'd actually already answered your own question then?
  23. Chalky, I think some of the youngsters have a bit more interest in/knowledge of the music than you give em credit for and the reason some don't go to full on northern nights may well be that they don't want to socialise with folks the same age as their parents, especially when some of those folks go out in fancy dress. As someone who is involved with a couple of events that mix some ska and R&B with the soul, can I just point out that it's not just youngsters who enjoy that type of event occassionally?
  24. Depends on your definition of "quality". There are dozens of decent events and there are a few outstanding events. That comes down to the DJs in the main. Everbody is a DJ these days, (how many are there on here? must number in the hundreds at least), but there are only 10 or a dozen whose name on a flyer would make me go out of my way to attend an event: people like Butch, Kitch, Andy Dyson, Mick H, Karl Heard for example.
