  1. As someone who enjoys RnB, I always find it interesting where people decide to draw their lines Like many others, it would not concern me if I did not here Dean Barlow again, but I think it is harsh to put Barbara Dane in the same bracket. It has a strong gospel influence, with a similar theme to Wade In The Water and was performed with feeling...and soul, if you like. As far as the Jimmy Robbins and Bud Harper records are concerned....should we judge them on their provenance or their sound? Just a bit of early evening musing on my part, really
  2. Gotta go along with that, but a voice I enjoy almost as much is Little Willie John.
  3. Too right John, tune and a half but I can rarely get anyone to play it, even if I take my copy LOL! Partly an East/West thing again I reckon! Did hear it a few weeks ago, think it was Yocky Sad thing is, must be a lot of younger soulies who have never heard it! Elusive is another similar case from the same year
  4. Absolutely, mate! Just dusted off that very LP and given it a spin Think I will try to get it played somewhere this weekend, perhaps Samanthas if I make it there. Would be rather appropriate as the sleeve notes say it was discovered by Dave Godin. Respect.
  5. And what about Exciters, Blowing Up My Mind
  6. Gets played enough in the midlands. Saxie Russell, Psychedelic Soul is one that makes me smile, and Lilie Bryant, Meet Me Halfway did when I heard it on Saturday. Nancy Wilson, End of Our Love would do if I heard it played out too! And was Black Nasty, Cut Your Motor Off such a terrible record that nobody dare speak it's name anymore?
  7. Couldn't agree more! Eloise Laws, Willy J and James Fountain were all big plays at Cleethorpes in the 70s, and therefore also Peterborough, St Ives etc (though if you go to an anniversary/revival for the latter two venues now you wouldn't think so) So how could those of us who embraced them then consider em to be anything other than classic oldies? Interestingly, having not heard Willy J for yonks, heard Sam play it a while back (immediately after Joseph Webster, went well together IMHO), so next time he was on I asked him to do the same and whether he played it often. He replied that he generally only played it on the Eastern side of the country! Think a lot of the pidgeon-holing is very subjective and stems from where and when we first heard the type of track which could be called x-over. (Haven't followed the whole thread so apologies if repeating anything that has already been said ) Careful with the use of the word funk though mate...theres some on the scene will suddenly go off any track which is described by the F word LOL! Same principle as the Wigan diehards who "don't like RnB" but dance their arses off to "That Driving Beat" I'll shut up now!
  8. Think I saw one in Sainsbury's about an hour ago, although this one was probably female(chavesse??) Didn't smell too good, am I on the right lines? And guess what it was doing.....? Yep, buying lottery tickets!
  9. No mate, only time I go there is to play cricket and I make sure we get through the overs quick so that I have reached at least Donington before its dark Enlightening website BTW!
  10. Thanks. Is that from viz, Janine? And are we allowed to waffle like this on here?
  11. He is, but sometimes he would like to be a Pit Bull! As you can see, he gives off a certain aura
  12. Not sure what happened there
  13. quote=KarenC,Oct 13 2004, 06:00 PM]Dave Chavs are like that bloke from near me that won the lottery. They wear burberry caps a lot and lots of really thick gold and silver chains and bracelets and are usually nasty gobby people link
  14. Oh, I see! Bit like the two outside this afternoon then who claimed their car had broken down. I let my demonic looking dog out and it miraculously started <_<
  15. What does "chav" mean then? (Sorry, but remember you have to make allowances for the fact that I live in Lincolnshire)
