Excellent, in fact, as you say....but not sure you can use that word in the same sentence as "Alfie Davison" You are bang on with the last bit as well mate...year, price, colour of artist, provenance- none matter as long its soulful, bit of a subjective thing IMHO, and somone wants to dance to it! Gotta say I find all the "classifications" a bit confusing and pointless. I can't bring meself to call a record I danced to/bought in 76 "modern". (As an aside, just seen on another thread what Candi Staton, NYGTUH, is worth! If some like ANY genre within the scene, then there's got to be a place for it and as you say, we can all stay away from places that don't suit our own individual taste Not the same as saying it shouldn't be played, is it? Poke was one of the most underrated and unassuming (still is) blokes on the scene, just as Cleggy was one of the most underrated venues for it's influence on the scene. He's recently been persuaded to play a few records again and runs a small local soul night (What do they say about it never leaving you?) He's got a story or two about the records he discovered and others took credit for but because of the guy he is they only get told in private! I'm with Soulsville here-I happen to have always loved the Hamilton Movement I will ask Poke about it and report back Dave (Spose there must have been a time when there were plenty of copies about )

My take on the original question - "Does the scene run your life?"..... Seeing as am organising work and family/other social commitments over xmas with soul events in mind... and seeing as I am currently changing my car for a faster, more economical one, purely because of the 3-400 miles I seem to travel each weekend souling... I would have to "Yes, certainly seems that way" But why not....? I've done my stint of paying school fees, (and working my rocks off to do so) I've spent countless Saturday nights at places I didn't want to be, talking to friends of my ex-wife who I didn't want to talk to about things I wasn't interested in.... And now I am enjoying the thing I most want to do; enjoying it more than in the 70s/80s Something the majority of "normal" people wouldn't be able to understand even if they were lucky enough to stumble upon it. Where else can you find what we all enjoy at an all-nighter? The buzz of sharing enjoyment in the familiar music, the thrill of hearing new records, the making of new friends every week, the anticipation of visiting a new venue etc etc Its unique, and at the moment I just want to get as much pleasure from the scene as possible, so it can run my life for a while yet

Emma certainly can dance! But Karen, you haven't seen anything until you've seen a video of YOU dancing. Winnie, agree about the women being better than the men, but that is the same in any dancing environment Partly due to physiology, agility, lack of self-consciousness etc as well as a feel for the music. Incidentally, there are one or two girls who contibute on here who seldom dance, but when they do are amongst the best and I sometimes wonder why they don't take to the floor more often

Winston, You're right mate live and let live indeed Those that feel they need a bit of talc should put a LITTLE down on the edge of the floor and freshen their soles/souls between dances....that used to be the way, didn't it? What if, though, there was a convention that, say the RHS was talced and the LHS wasn't? Last weekend I discovered a hitherto unthought of hazard of talc!! I called in at Awsworth on my way to Flipside and about 11.00 the fire alarm went off. The explanation given for this was that talc had drifted into the smoke sensor My own theory, however, is that the static from Brian Rae's polyester shirt caused a spark which ignited some flyers One thing we are all in agreement about though...keep the bloody beer off the dancefloor :angry:

Very sad news. Too shocked to add much except that Derek brightened the lives of anyone who heard/saw one of his sets, let alone those that knew him. RIP
