  1. David, where and when did you play that set, mate? And where was the event at Spalding you mentioned in your other post? Dave
  2. Yeah, reminds me of the policeman "just pissing by when....." Aren't we cynical?!!!
  3. Not just overrated, but over bloody played and all!! Yours in Heresy, Dave PS "Whispers" is the one for me. and quite like "Nothing but Blue Skies"
  4. Don't know how you make that one out I unfortunately wasn't able to be there, but I thought Cookie and Jo Wallace, to name but two, were on?
  5. Andy...good suggestion Also Sam Evans Saw half a dozen guys in N Yorks last weekend all working the floor to the oldies - think Carl was one of em.
  6. looks like you just beat me to it there mate Dave
  7. "Soul related or basically in it for the money?" Er, some ask that question about the Kings Hall promoter! I gather from another thread that the reason Kev hasn't said anything is that he is away
  8. Oi, have you listened to "Dedicated", you bad tempered old mongrel, you?
  9. Wel hello y'self! In fact, ello, ello, ello No, just bargain hunting. BTW, who's working the keyboard for you?
  10. I'd guess that makes two of you then????
  11. What book are we talking about? Can somebody bring one to Sheri's tonight?
  12. Go to a an average soul night in the midlands and you'll find plenty of men "brave" enough to play Bobby Paris!
  13. I am a bit surprised this thread has extended to a second page...best way to deal with attention seeking kids is to ignore them I did wonder if the two upcoming events in Sheffield had anything to do with the timing of this....but then I thought: "Nah, don't be so cynical. Sheffield- not Stoke"
  14. Drunken!? Surely not!!!! Looking forward to a listen mate
  15. Eh up Brett, I know you were talking only to Reg there, but I couldn't help overhearing The Bill Spoon is nice, though I've only heard it on a CD. Excellent, in fact, as you say....but not sure you can use that word in the same sentence as "Alfie Davison" You are bang on with the last bit as well mate...year, price, colour of artist, provenance- none matter as long its soulful, bit of a subjective thing IMHO, and somone wants to dance to it! Gotta say I find all the "classifications" a bit confusing and pointless. I can't bring meself to call a record I danced to/bought in 76 "modern". (As an aside, just seen on another thread what Candi Staton, NYGTUH, is worth! Could weep.... had two copies: gave one away years ago and my son took the other one, along with some more of that ilk for his mate to listen to, in Sheffield funnily enough, and now is not sure where it is! We'll have a pint if you are going to Keele
  16. You've said one of those, Reg But I reckon you know now, don't you? Steve got it as quickly as I guessed J.!
  17. Didn't mean you are in one, meant you perhaps don't realise what a good dancer you are because you can't see yourself as others do!
  18. Thanks Karen Yourself likewise
  19. LOL!! Reckon you've given the definitive answer ther Pete. If some like ANY genre within the scene, then there's got to be a place for it and as you say, we can all stay away from places that don't suit our own individual taste Not the same as saying it shouldn't be played, is it? And as for those Cleethorpes tunes........ (BTW, apparently Willie J is now an anthem on the deepfunk scene you pretended to know nothing about the other day)
  20. Poke was one of the most underrated and unassuming (still is) blokes on the scene, just as Cleggy was one of the most underrated venues for it's influence on the scene. He's recently been persuaded to play a few records again and runs a small local soul night (What do they say about it never leaving you?) He's got a story or two about the records he discovered and others took credit for but because of the guy he is they only get told in private! I'm with Soulsville here-I happen to have always loved the Hamilton Movement I will ask Poke about it and report back Dave (Spose there must have been a time when there were plenty of copies about )
  21. My take on the original question - "Does the scene run your life?"..... Seeing as am organising work and family/other social commitments over xmas with soul events in mind... and seeing as I am currently changing my car for a faster, more economical one, purely because of the 3-400 miles I seem to travel each weekend souling... I would have to "Yes, certainly seems that way" But why not....? I've done my stint of paying school fees, (and working my rocks off to do so) I've spent countless Saturday nights at places I didn't want to be, talking to friends of my ex-wife who I didn't want to talk to about things I wasn't interested in.... And now I am enjoying the thing I most want to do; enjoying it more than in the 70s/80s Something the majority of "normal" people wouldn't be able to understand even if they were lucky enough to stumble upon it. Where else can you find what we all enjoy at an all-nighter? The buzz of sharing enjoyment in the familiar music, the thrill of hearing new records, the making of new friends every week, the anticipation of visiting a new venue etc etc Its unique, and at the moment I just want to get as much pleasure from the scene as possible, so it can run my life for a while yet
  22. Emma certainly can dance! But Karen, you haven't seen anything until you've seen a video of YOU dancing. Winnie, agree about the women being better than the men, but that is the same in any dancing environment Partly due to physiology, agility, lack of self-consciousness etc as well as a feel for the music. Incidentally, there are one or two girls who contibute on here who seldom dance, but when they do are amongst the best and I sometimes wonder why they don't take to the floor more often
  23. Winston, You're right mate live and let live indeed Those that feel they need a bit of talc should put a LITTLE down on the edge of the floor and freshen their soles/souls between dances....that used to be the way, didn't it? What if, though, there was a convention that, say the RHS was talced and the LHS wasn't? Last weekend I discovered a hitherto unthought of hazard of talc!! I called in at Awsworth on my way to Flipside and about 11.00 the fire alarm went off. The explanation given for this was that talc had drifted into the smoke sensor My own theory, however, is that the static from Brian Rae's polyester shirt caused a spark which ignited some flyers One thing we are all in agreement about though...keep the bloody beer off the dancefloor
  24. Very sad news. Too shocked to add much except that Derek brightened the lives of anyone who heard/saw one of his sets, let alone those that knew him. RIP
