  1. Not too sure what you mean there Shane Moving swiftly along, Would you have enjoyed it more if Shuffler had been there?
  2. Well, I had an enjoyable night there on Friday, so there!
  3. You only have to look at the wallpaper in the picture to guess the guy's not normal
  4. I'm not too sure what's meant by "nu modern"??? I thought the stuff in the lounge area was that, and nice enough it was too. When Sam's in a "main room", I don't think he plays that much of what I would call modern. Now my memory is returning I recall from the weekend Robert Tanner, Eddie Whitehead, Del Larks, Hamilton Movement, both sides of Marg Little, Cashmeres etc. As for that Kenny Thomas, which I personally don't like, it gets played more than enough if you go to places like Cleethorpes or, god forbid, Hull!
  5. Been thinking about this, Joe. It may have been partly my fault cos it was a time of night when I didn't feel like sitting listening (for some reason ) and asked him for a couple of fast dancers, and as Sam always tries to please he also played one I had asked for the night before. This was about 2/3rds of the way through his set. These are the type of records I personally like to hear the man play! Can't help thinking that Sam's sets come in for more scrutiny than most and that there are more people ready to critcise him than other DJs. Reckon this is because for many, many years he has been willing to try something different and sometimes it's bound to misfire. I'm not trying to argue with you mate, but I think you are being a bit harsh. The tracks he plays are different to the norm, just as your nighter is, and I look forward to both Dave Are you going to Stoke, BTW?
  6. You are right in what you say John, but given that every local Friday night DJ has a copy of this (of some description!!!) and a good few of us consider it a record that, at best, soon wears off....who is creating the demand to keep the price high?
  7. I reckon he's still a steeew-dent!
  8. It is in the Potteries!
  9. I believe Joss Stone had a track by this title on one of her albums- same song? Sorry to go off-topic
  10. That's a bit harsh. . . . . . Bloody funny, but harsh
  11. Vondors, Look in the Mirror Eddie Holman, Got to Make a Comeback
  12. Do you mean wrong order tempo-wise?
  13. Rang the man tonight and told him about the Samanthas do. Said I would bring him but although not sure whether you'll get him to this one he may well be tempted enough for the next one. John, have pm'd you his number, have a chat with him Reeled off the names from the flyer: "Vincent..........,Mannion - "bloody hell, is he still on the go?" Poke is mainly back into Deep Soul these days but I know he's got a few old tunes kicking about! Dave
  14. Just as well, as it turned out mate
  15. "What".....or who?
  16. You left too early on Sunday morning! This one left me dizzy, for some reason
  17. Been hearing this in certain quarters again lately, and the instrumental flip. What a feel-good record!!!!!!
  18. Good for you Pete for having the balls to mention Rain, Paula Parfitt etc. They were an integral part of the scene When Cleethorpes took off in 75 I went there instead of Wigan (some people tend to forget the influence Cleggy had) and I sometimes ask for some of "their" oldies. It's quite ironic that some DJs who played Black Nasty, Elusive, Willi J then won't entertain em now, even at "revivals" on the Eastern side of the country
  19. I think all of us that go out every weekend suffer this Shane. I can have a good night at an oldies/ Across the board effort if I know what to expect beforehand...What really pisses me off is if a night is billed as up-front and it turns out not to be, or if I go to hear a certain DJ and he ain't there BTW, its the new equivalent of the Union this Friday and Mick has said he will play the flip of Margaret Little Are you nipping down the M1? Dave
  20. There you go again...all very subjective I cover as many miles as you do and would say that what "works now" in one place will not necessarily work in another. And you don't see too many of the typical Sheffield crowd at, say, Sheridans, do you?
  21. What you mean Shane is that it "does not sound right today".... to you! That doesn't give you, me or anybody else the right to say a track shouldn't be played. Pete's right- it was more straightforward in the 70'S and as you have demonstrated, the soul police are far more active today! And BTW, got to agree with Steve, you appeared to be enjoying yourself at Sams over Xmas
  22. I personally wouldn't want to hear these too often, but if its a mixed/revival/across the board night why are they any less legitimate than the oldies that get flogged to death (which I would also prefer not to hear too often, but unfortunately do!!)
  23. Bit surprised nobody's mentioned The Champion I'll add: Lyn Johnson, Wicked Woman Little Johnny Taylor, Somewhere Down The Line, Lou Pride, I'm Comun Home....or the instrumental Admirations, You Left Me Johnny Howard, The Chase Is On Billy Arnell, Tough Girl Hamilton Movement, She's Gone Joseph Webster, My Love Is Strong... ..... Oh, hang on - was it supposed to be just one record
  24. The voice of reason as always, Brett. Couldn't agree more And while we are touching the subject of getting new faces on the scene, I think there are some that should question their attitudes to this. Last year I took my 18yo son and his girlfriend to what I consider to be one of the better soul nights in the midlands. They both enjoy the music, they observed the etiquette re the dancefloor and were enjoying dancing unobtrusively in a back corner of the dancefloor when some overcooked soulie took the hump at them dancing together and crossed the floor to push my son off!! Needless to say the arsehole will not do it again while I'm there, but the sad thing is neither of the youngsters have wanted to return to our "friendly" NS scene
