  1. Yes, I agree....you and I know that Geordie! But what I'm trying to say is that many newcomers would feel more confident if they'd had a bit of encouragement in this way and understood a bit more of our etiquette. I have a son who is into the music and I'm trying to look at it as he does.
  2. A lot of people, especially youngsters, would love to join in. Did you go to any of the CIS nighters? But many are intimidated by self- consciousness and not knowing the etiquette. Imagine if you were a young soul fan at your first event.... You love the music but wouldn't it all seem a bit weird and insular?
  3. Not from me!just better than him thats all. link
  4. You are absolutely right If it helps people to enjoy the scene, it doesn't matter what it's called I'm just pleased there are one or two others wanting to see new blood on the scene to help it progress, rather than dieing with the dinosaurs
  5. So what qualifications would you and Mr Sims consider appropriate?
  6. Seconded Col Paul's a brilliant dancer and a good bloke to boot Have seen one or two slightly frosty comments on SS....reckon it might be jealousy? Hope you are well BTW? Stafford Reunion? Dave
  7. I think I'll leave it to Shane this time
  8. Is that the cue for another bad joke?
  9. I know Just seemed appropriate though
  10. Better stick it in the pan and get the lemon and black pepper ready then mate Heard this one? A man went into a butchers and asked "What's happened to your assistant?" "I sacked him!!" replied the butcher. "Why" "Because he was sticking his c*ck in the bacon slicer" "What happened to the bacon slicer?" "I sacked her as well" Sorry....that came from Sheffield
  11. Funnily enough I wasn't intending to "give him stick"....just recounting what I heard. Mick kept the floor full for the last hour with quite a lot of records that would be mainly familiar to regular nighter-goers and the TBI crowd. I spoke to quite a few friends WHO WERE THERE and their thoughts were similar to mine. Dave
  12. Hi Dan, I didn't get there till about 9.30 so missed Andy (very under-rated) and Hammie's early sets. I heard some good music in the main room till 10.00 when the rank oldies started. Went into the small room and caught half an hour of Mick and Kenny Burrell double decking with some unusual records.....so far, so good! After that in the second room it was Hammie with oldies, as billed, and Lee Vowles playing "modern", which turned out to be 70s oldies, several of which he interrupted with the microphone. I wandered into the main room a few times to hear motown and more tired oldies, some repeated. I did stick it out until Mick came on at 12.00 and his set was of the usual high standard, so at least it finished on a high! For the second time running this event has been let down IMHO by a big name guest playing safe! I hope none of my entrance money was used to pay Ken Burrell A good atmosphere, and better night than some but I heard a better sustained quality of music at Wellingborough on Friday. As you say, back to Little Annie Dave
  13. You can't, can you? Fair shout though
  14. Looks like we all agree on that one then.....any dissenters? (Though to be fair ....I love Big Bad Wolf )
  15. I take it this is one you are playing regularly at the moment then, mate?
  16. Leicester!!!
  17. I think the reason only "bit different" tracks have crossed over is that these are the ones singled out by the Northern DJs for novelty value On the rare occassions I have heard a true R&B collector in a main room BDR, James Duncan, Lou Lowton etc are not top of the playlist.
  18. OK Chalky....so not in your Northern room.....but how about the East wing? As for knowing there will something played that you do like.....I had to wait an hour and half last night
  19. It's a brilliant record. It has crossed into Northern rooms.....look who mentioned it first I'm just pleased you didn't say: "There's no place for it on the Northern scene" I don't think anyone, not even Chalky has the right to say that about a record Good evening all BTW
  20. Still thinking about letting you off Angela and myself are pretty nimble on our feet too - just ask Shute about Angela's hop link
  21. Have to agree about big Paul from Sheffield Another Paul, Sadot, is pretty nimble and can spin with the best of em (just wish he'd go a bit easier on the talc ) And I suppose someone should mention "Spike" Cato? But what about the girls???? Sam from Coventry beats the men in plenty of competitions....but the two who are a real joy to watch are Kate and Janet from Hull. They just get lost in the music, every lightening fast movement has expression in it, from head to toe. Every swish of the hair and elegant gesture of the hand is perfectly timed and has meaning. If there is such a thing as Poetry in motion, they embody it
