  1. Hi Paul, Surreal is a good description mate I know we were talking about those '75 sounds beforehand and I think it was either Elusive or Cut Your Motor Off that I dropped in I've discovered I have some videos on my phone from that night, including one from the stage where you can be seen making merry to Sam Williams! There's a voice on stage saying "Oh dear.....oh dear, oh dear....I can't find the f*ckin record....." Not sure who that was Dave
  2. Well Roger, as you know I haven't agreed with every single thing you've posted on here...... ....but I do agree with what you've written above! Dave
  3. Well I suppose that would be one plus point
  4. Very well put, Shane. As you know it's not altogether the type of music I want to hear all the time, but as you say the atmosphere and friendliness is unmatched IMHO. So much so that I'll drive the 90 miles every now and again just for "a good night out" It would be interesting to know just how many people have been introduced/reintroduced to the scene through the efforts of Richard, Julie and the rest of the team....all very unassuming people!! Regards, Dave PS The one thing about the oldies at Drax is that there are a lot of what I would call Cleggy oldies, which you only tend to hear on the East side of the country.....Jamie?
  5. My point was....why single out Drax? There are plenty of venues where cd's/boots are played....if they all stopped there would be a LOT less soul nights to choose from. It wasn't a case of just not wanting to travel....some people with young families are not able to go miles from home! I go to venues far and wide as well, but I don't try to dictate to others where thay should go and what they should hear. Who the fcuk do you think you are to say "they should get together at home and play their cd's"???? I notice you don't mention dancing in the list of reasons for travelling. That's what most people go to Drax to do!!!! Judging by the number of ranting smilies, you must be on some pretty fearsome come-down! Dave (that's my real name, BTW)
  6. Hi Jimmy, were you the guy playing at the last one, on the 11th? Dave
  7. "Ladiesman", I collect and occassionally play a bit of original vinyl, but tend to think each to his own and have stayed out of these type of debates in the past.....as has been said, most dancers don't give a shit. However you have steamed in and singled out one particular event, the promoters of which do not come on here, for criticism. To add a bit of perspective, the soul event at Drax was started by and for a few mates who wanted to hear a bit of music without travelling. It has never been heavily promoted and the guys do not pretend to be big name DJs. A mixture of vinyl and CDs is played and entry originally cost £2 of "hard earned cash". Recently this has been raised to £3 as the event has become very popular and the organisers now have a guest DJ. The atmosphere here is always friendly and people go to dance and have a good time....very little bolotics! I know for a fact that Drax has introduced, and reintroduced, a lot of people to the scene , some of whom have then ventured further afield...perhaps even to venues you approve of! I personally have no problem with the set up at Drax when you compare it to the "name" DJ's who play boots and one headline DJ I saw this weekend playing an entire set off CDs.....but nobody jumps in to name him, do they? As for the people who have searched for rare vinyl.... yeah, good on 'em But does that benefit the artists or production company? Some might argue that playing, for example, CDs bought on the Kent label repays in some small way the originators of the music! Regards, Dave
  8. Now you are casting pearls before swine, Joe Brilliant record Expect they'll say that's soul
  9. Good post that Shane....thought I'd just say that before the soul police call for reinforcements now you've called into question the fashionable 70s disco and background music Funny you should mention the Mello Souls. A good record, but would it have had the acclaim if it had been less rare and expensive? I must say there is not the preoccupation with rarity, cost and who's playing the record on the R&B front that there seems to be in the up-front scene. I think you are also right that most people go to R&B nights to dance, rather than stroke their chins regards, Dave
  10. DRA- 7017- 1.....Promo. Flip is Where Can My Baby Be.
  11. Hmmm...SNAS sounds better "in context", i.e. played out and played loud if you know what I mean And yes, I like the Jay Lewis Dave
  12. Got both mate...might take me a while to find and send em though. I'll send them by email if you pm it to me....seems to work better that way
  13. Just seemed apt today, somehow
  14. Right enough
  15. You can find it on soulclub.org mate
  16. Well I can see how it makes appeal on both scenes, and I have to say I enjoy both types of music, but I'd call it more funk than RnB....but hell, does it matter....great sound. And it seems as if you may have played a hand in us hearing it for the first time, so good on ya I posted earlier about a funk DJ having Jimmy Robbins in his box...what do you make of that one then? Regards, Dave
  17. The Primers, How Does It Grab You came to my mind spouse #3, but that's about as likely to get a mention on this thread as Clean Up the Ghetto.
  18. Defo a funk record
  19. OK Betty O'Brien, She'll Be Gone and so am I
  20. Very droll I'm off before it deteriates further
