  1. Thank you. At last an answer to the important issue! BTW, this "quiche" of which you speak... is that what was known as flan "back in the day"?
  2. Can you ask him if this extends to playing oldies to try to fill the floor at an "Upfront" event, enen though punters have paid to hear stuff they barely know?
  3. Shane, I agree with Baz... its just that I found the food angle more interesting than the thread. I'm waiting for somebody to start about etiquette now... should one extend one's little finger Wigan stylee whilst eating a vol au vent or is it unimportant? Sorry I neglected the vegetarian aspect. Do you think we should add other options to the menu, such as kosher?
  4. No, that's a very poor analogy. You don't go into a venue and order your music. Think of it more as a buffet. There are several different meats on offer, some of which are not to your taste. You choose the ones you like and fill up on bread. Hope this helps... it's sure as hell confused me. G. Ramsay
  5. So am I... didn't mean to imply otherwise. Just trying to point out that they are a different animal to 70s oldies.
  6. I think your "live and let live" attitude is great Baz.
  7. I'm afraid I can't really grasp the idea of regarding some of the oldies mentioned in this thread, which I heard in the 70's at Cleethorpes for example, as modern. Bits and Pieces could pass as a 60's record IMO. I thought modern soul was something you identified by the different sound.... Drizabone and DJ Genesis being examples mentioned of what you what you might hear in a separate modern room.
  8. I think you've made an interesting point there. If we're honest, which events, especially in terms of soul nights, are the best attended? Generally the ones playing familiar oldies. IMO this will not be the case for too much longer as the "nostalgia" crowd gradually go out less and less, but currently..... anybody who tries to put on a night which varies from the safe formula is taking a risk. I, and probably a good few others, have DJ'd at more "specialist type do's" for petrol money... because we want to see a particular event do well, i.e. its an event with a music policy that appeals. I wouldn't do that though if it was yet another oldies night put on in an already saturated market. Going back to another point, however, those that hump the leg of a progressive scene but then only attend events which they promote/ DJ at.... have got all that's coming to them, IMO.
  9. Noting that you live in the midlands, might the poor attendances not be due to the fact that most local venues play the same 200 records? And might that not be the reason why some are starting other nights? Don't quite get this business about the names. Are you suggesting that the use of a nickname implies a poor DJ? Wonder what Butch would think to that!
  10. My opinion is... you should have finished work an hour earlier
  11. No, FW hasn't become a bad record. Its a decent record that's been abused. It's just become the Hi Ho Silver Lining of Norman Soul. Even though there's so few copies, hundreds of people play it. They play it on Sunday Afternoons at Weekenders, quietening the record during the chorus so that people in baggy clothes can sing along with a nostalgic tear in their eye. They play it, in an ironic way, in student bars, along with the snake. They play it on karaoke machines. I don't want to hear it again for a very long time. It's still better than the Seven Souls though.... that is just a bad record.
  12. Can I join in? I don't like it... reckon it was made with ice-dancing in mind.
  13. First of all, why don't you get off that fence and say what you bloody think? Interesting comparison with the European "scene" there. I've experienced an example of it, and very refreshing it is too... much as you've described. There is however a major reason why it will be such a struggle to achieve the same here, and you've outlined it in the first para I've quoted: The clubbers in Europe go simply because they have a love for good music and want to dance to it. They have no preconceived ideas and their judgemants are not affected by history, heritage etc. The younger element here have an image of "northern soul". It involves groups of middle aged people dressed in baggy clothes and vests dancing to the same 200 records, that have been played since 1974, every week, worried to death about such things as etiquette, and banging on about a given record being played at a club that was closed before they were born. I'm not saying their image is absolutely accurate, but it exists nevertheless... and its easy to see how it might be slightly off-putting.
  14. Interesting post, that! No probs there in my book. Would be interested to know... where is your "neck of the woods" though? One or two in my area play dubs or even CDs of BIG sounds they claim to own, but in actual fact they don't! Bit insulting IMO!
  15. Funny that... I got the whiff of a wind up as well
  16. Aint no mountain high enough. Your gonna love my baby. There's two there that are well overdue for a rest IMHO .... whoever started playing Aint No Mountain again has got a lot to answer for Can we replace them on the list wth Whole Lot of Shaking and Thrill A Moment please?
  17. I'm glad you posted that up Paul I looked for it recently on Martin's website, but couldn't find it. Seem to remember you posting up a Wirrina playlist on another forum a while back.... have you got it handy by any chance?
  18. I didn't think he meant they were played in Peterborough first. And at the risk of stating an arguement, I would suggest that one or two of them may have been played at Cleethorpes first, (like a few other "Mecca" records), apart from The Exciters which was played once/hour for a week on Radio Luxemburg.
  19. I can't see whats wrong with having those "five different styles" in one room Nb. The Ad-lib is not just motown and club soul!
  20. Not absolutely sure, but I kinda get the feeling you two ain't gonna be doing business
  21. Anybody mentioned The Champion? And Willie J is almost an instrumental. Scott Brothers , They All Came Back. And Get It by Wilmer & The Dukes is better than any Jr Walker IMO, but if i was going to choose one of his it would be Good Rockin.
  22. But what about your Autumn of Tomorrow? (Sorry... couldn't resist )
  23. Now we've moved from liking/ not liking a record to what should/ should not be played.... heady stuff!
