  1. I think this is starting to get a bit hysterical. There seems to be a building resentment in some quarters for the people who attend KRL do's??? Surely everyone can decide for themselves whether to support KR events in future? A good few from here won't I reckon... and in the end it probably won't make that much difference but its a matter of individual conscience.
  2. Are you sure you posted that on the right forum?
  3. Most of it is now, but thats the area of the scene that gets the most support
  4. Why would you want that? You or I may not like those type of events but why deny the pleasure of people who do..... just don't go mate! (Although from what I hear you don't get to many events anyway ) So as well as the ever watchful soul police, you now want promoters to apply to what... a ministry of soul? Only you couldn't call it that, it would have to be something like the Soulful Affairs Unit or DESSA or somethinglike that. I guess you'd be keen to head this quango? Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? I wouldn't ban anything... well apart from maybe young right-wing soulies who want to dictate their tastes to others.
  5. I'll second what everybody else has said. The clips are amongst the most interesting features I've ever seen on this site! Good work Pete
  6. If Margaret has been banned purely for that post, it really is astonishing!!
  7. I guess we're talking "nice" records here, are we? Joking apart, a couple of weeks ago I played two sets at a mixed night. Later I noticed that all but two records from the soul set were female vocals and all but three from the R&B set were male vocals.
  8. I won't bother Shane, if you don't mind. Though I didn't mean that Stuart had ridiculed Levine's sexuality, the ebay page does and the first post suggests "read it and piss yourself". I still find it difficult to see the need for paedophilia to be brought into the thread, but I obviously see it differently to others so I will leave it at that.
  9. OK Shane, let me put another way. Yet again there's a thread on here about Levine and as usual his sexuality is held up as a subject for derision and humour... I think Simon's post#28 sums up the correct reaction to that. Why then, does the thread have to plumb new depths by bringing paedophilia into the discussion? Rather distasteful in my view.
  10. Then why follow the irrelevant and regrettable remarks in the ebay link about Levine's homosexuality with references to paedophilia? Do you consider the two behaviours interlinked?
  11. I thought the question was about the genre of music rather than a scene, but since you've mentioned it, I think its a bit unfair to say "they will listen to anything because they're drifting etc" The funk events I've attended in the last few years are smaller and fewer than the vast amounts of northern events available. Nevertheless they attract their regular followers and while the music is diverse, from Detroit to Afro to Latin to ska even, it all has a common element to my ears. As Godz suggested, I think funk fans are more broad-minded than most soulies and at the events Baz has mentioned 30-40% of the music could fit into a northern/R&B night... IMHO of course It's a thin line between a lot of R&B and early funk.
  12. You've already mentioned the Wheel, where I understand soul was played alongside Jamaican music but in reply to were there soulies in each camp... there certainly were a little later than the period you mentioned! I can remember a few of us used to go to the odd night in Peterborough, around '75,6 where northern was played alongside funk and Jamaican music. Strangely, as I recall, it was best not to mention this at nighters.
  13. Doesn't do much for me I'm afraid. Like Davie, I would like to know what differentiates this from dozens of other similar tracks. Is it just that the artist isn't "mainstream"? I just played it to my son, who is involved in funk/house/hip-hop etc events, and when he'd stopped laughing he described it as "cheese for towny clubs" and was astonished that it might get played on our scene.
  14. Noice!! Not my usual cuppa but really liked that. Would sooner hear a few like that than say, Because of You yet again! Drizabone have been mentioned... there's a couple of better tracks than Pressure (much as I like it) on the Conspiracy album IMHO!
  15. Yes.... I lost money on the Czech game! I'm not sure they were the original players!
  16. I'm getting well pissed off with reading that every event in Peterborough is an oldies-fest! Baz, you know thats not the case! Russ, if you want to hear something/somebody different you could do at the Restless events, but so far you have chosen not to. Fair enough, but don't tar everyone with the same brush until you've tried it. Same thing with this playing originals jive... I play nothing else and as far as I know everyone else at Restless has done the same. You want to be very careful what you say... are you honestly going to tell us that no pressings/dubs/CDs have been played at St Ives?
  17. Tragic news. My condolences to all Nige's family and friends.
  18. I think that sums it up well. The members on here represent what is quite a musically diverse scene, which is great... be a dull old life if we all liked the same. It pisses me off though when people decide to try and "educate" the rest of us by telling us we don't move on or we are somehow inferior in a particular region if we don't attend a certain event. I can never see the need for people to call a genre they don't happen to like shite, either!
  19. Do you have an ancestor called Crocodile??
  20. Ok, I would say the medium they are played off is a very important issue, for reasons I have already explained... so I won't go over it again. Yes, someone did make the point about "everyone being catered for at some stage"... but having read a few of his posts, I find it difficult to set much store by what he says. Besides, one or two token records during an evening is not really catering for enthusiasts of a particular genre, is it? I tried to put across what I would expect from an across the board night... a reasonable representation of each genre... not just a couple of records. Regarding your last para., I don't think its really to do with who has the most knowledge of records, but what you say about "the majority rules" concurrs with what I said in an earlier post: The majority want to hear the top 200 oldies plus a few lightweight 70's tunes! That's a pity...IMO.
  21. If thats addressed to me, I'm not a snob. I just have an attention span a bit longer than a goldfish and I don't want to listen to the same 100 records every week.
  22. I can think of one or two local ns nights where "across the board" means mixing a bit of chart motown in with the well known oldies. I think a lot would agree with your definition of across the board but at the average soul night how much real modern, R&B, or newies (unless they're played off a boot/dub) do you hear? Or even under-played oldies? Not much. As for your comment about a DJ moving between genres to suit the crowd, a lot of DJ'S would not have enough records of every type to be able to do that, and why should they? IMO the big problem with the current scene is too many nights with four or five DJs who all have similar records, often pressings. This is what has put some rare records into the overplayed category. BTW, I've nothing against nights for "oldies lovers"... as long as they are advertised as such.
  23. He's well out of order Paul. I for one hope he gets his come-uppance!!
  24. Can't agree that the majority of soul nights have an across the board policy. The majority play worn out oldies with a few worn out gentle, easy to dance to 70s records like Jackie Wilson and Ace Spectrum. I think at some events thats not necessarily the priority.
